Annoying Error Message
I'm getting this annoying error message whenever (periodically) I use Winamp, or when I attempt to restart/shutdown my computer.
"The drive is not ready for use. Its door may be open. Please check drive and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." Obviously, I checked and made sure the door wasn't open. However, it sounds like a program is waiting for media to be inserted. No programs are running in the foreground, and none of the processes looked like they were that type. I also thought that a non-existent drive might be set to "enable" in the BIOS, but that was not the case. Any advice? Thanks! |

I managed to get the error message to go away in Winamp (There were two floppy drives listed in the device manager, so I disabled the non-existent one) but the error persists when I try to restart the computer. Here is the request info:

(I forgot to turn on my external Hard drive.) |
I did a little more digging. I don't like the looks of your event logs, chief. Lots of errors going on in there!
You're using Windows XP SP1, am I right? If so, you may want to consider updating to Service Pack 2. I recommend a clean install via slipstream. I noticed you deactivated your Norton antivirus software. Why? You might find these useful in the interim, while I continue to sift through stuff. Other Help Desk regulars, here's your chance!

Thanks to some help in IRC from Zergrinch, I've managed to make some progress.
I uninstalled the two A drives in device manager, as well as the two generic usb volumes (the card readers). Once I rebooted, Windows installed its generic drivers for the newfound hardware, and the the extraneous A drive was gone. Now I have the correct device listings. If I disable the A: drive, the error message goes away. If I enable it, the error message persists (when I shutdown, log off, or restart). So, I know it is an issue with the A: drive. That is all, for now. Thanks alot, Zergrinch. |
Update:Problem solved!
Man do I feel like an idiot. I put a disk in the floppy drive, re-created the error, closed the program, took out the floppy, and now it all works. Weird quirk, but all is now fine! Thanks again, Zergrinch! |
Glad to help, though I now feel rather embarassed accusing you of disabling Norton, when it's just plain old Nvidia (nwiz, nvcpl) :p
