Temper, temper!

Do you have a temper? How easy/hard is it to trigger your temper? Are you trying to change aspects of your temper? Any good stories where you lose your temper?

I have a pretty fiery temper, but I've learned to suppress it almost all the time. I have to be backed pretty far into a corner, or really tired, for it to go off. I think I've lost control twice in the last year, and neither time was all that interesting, except for people who hadn't seen my temper flare up before.

The best story I have of losing my temper is when I was 12 or 13 at my friend's house for a sleepover. One of my best friends sat on my torso and head with a bean bag chair, not realizing that I'm claustrophobic when my head is fully enclosed by something close. So I freaked out, flipped the thing over him, then grabbed him by the neck and dug my thumbs into the back of his neck. Eventually I calmed down, and he wasn't mad so much as apologetic for freaking me out.

I have a temper, but it's only caused when someone hits a nerve. I remember a few years ago, before we were leaving Grade 6, some kid just wouldn't shut the hell up, and he insulted my family. Unfortunately, he was one of the people who didn't know that that easily pissed me off... I took his scrawny little head, and smashed it into the cement, where I proceeded to repeatedly punch him in the face before two teachers pulled me off of him. After that, I've refused to fight with anyone unless it's in self defense.. Anytime now, I either just go outside and start yelling at the top of my lungs, or I just yell straight in the person's face.

I don't really have much of a temper, and although I'm easily annoyed some days it rarely ever goes beyond that. Grumbling quietly is more my style as opposed to outright rage. Being passive is a little boring, but I feel bad about the times when I do blow up. Not because I regret my actions, but because I feel like I should have had more composure.

No interesting rage stories come to mind right off. I usually just start yelling, and since it happens so rarely anyone who knows me is pretty rattled by it. There was one occassion where I shoved a large table about 7 feet into a guy's back though. Didn't hurt him, but it scared him and that was all I was going for anyway. I can't even remember why I was so pissed at the time, just that it was after school in a science classroom.

I have a fairly violent temper, but only a very small number of things can actually cause me to become angry. I am normally very stoic and stone-faced. When I do get angry, however, there is much screaming and gesturing of hands.

Summonmaster Feb 3, 2007 09:31 PM

I never flare up in front of anyone and am usually the one who can be the airhead in most situations. However, the only things that I usually get worried about are things beyond my control such as "this professor sucks, can't teach, so illogical, blah blah blah"..."fucking bus didn't come for an hour!" Never snaps in front of anyone.

I usually lose my temper when I play the Pro Evolution Soccer game, which notably have me let fly with swear words left right and centre much to the annoyance of my brother. I haven't played those games in a while though it's not good for me.

I lost my temper too easily today though, I couldn't get the PC microphone working because I don't know anything about computers, luckily my parents were out because I couldn't control my swearing. Turns out I plugged the damn thing into the disabled soundcard bit, but I knew I wasted 10 minutes trying to figure it out.

I never channel my temper onto anyone but I usually swear shout scream and show the TV (if I'm playing videogames) the middle finger. All the males in our family have a bad temper I notice.

Single Elbow Feb 3, 2007 11:06 PM

I swear sometimes I'm a rageoholic (is that even a word?) and cannot control my temper under dire stress. It actually takes some willpower for me not to actually hit someone.

I verbally lose my temper when I am around my family sometimes. I try to keep it's occurances at home, since we usually get into our heated debates around the table with a bottle of wine.

But there's one noteable time I was at Six Flags with my friends at graduation a long time ago.

We were waiting in line at the rollercoaster with a bunch of other people. Some balck girls who had been mouthing off the entire time about everyone else decided that they were going to go to another ride. They shoved Sarah on their way out. So Sarah shoved back.

One of them bitch slapped Sarah.

Sarah looked at me pretty much saying "HOLY SHIT SHE SLAPPED ME. DANIELLE. DO SOMETHING." Jenn was there also, but when I looked at her in hopes that she'd help me out with the undertaking I was about to delve into, she was looking at the sky, oblivious.

So, I flipped out. I remember screaming A LOT, and grabbing one of the four or five LARGE black girls by her throat and punching her in the face while yelling "YOU DON'T HIT SMALL GIRLS, YOU STUPID BITCH!"

I got hit in the face a few times myself, expectedly. But they eventually all got their faces punched in, and all left, one after another.

I was still screaming about them having hit Sarah in the face. It was one of those rages that you completely lose control and go NUTS - not knowing what you're doing at all.

All I had to see was someone hit Sarah. I went off the deep end. ;_; I would probably not do this kind of thing now that I am older, but I would probably still verbally flip if I saw it go down.

I never have a temper, but sometimes it's fun to act like I'm having one. Oh, well I guess the exception to this is during some sporting events when I easily have to call bullshit on a lot of things, but it's ok because everyone else it too. =p But if I do find myself in a situation where I need to let off some steam, I just do whatever equivalent I can do to crushing a scouter. I'll break a box or something or pop some bubbles... sometimes I also go on a little spending spree when I get mad too. Buying things makes me happy. :p

Kaiten Feb 4, 2007 01:31 AM

I don't have a temper at all. In fact I'm very good at staying stable in the most outrageous circumstances.

When I do get very angry (which happens so rarely) I suppress my impulse to yell or become violent and instead use that to tackle the task at hand, or just to rouse myself to action to complete something I don't want to do.

It's surprising how much stronger I am when I focus my rage on doing a job rather than throwing a fit.

Shiny McShine Feb 4, 2007 04:13 AM

I myself have a pretty bad temper, but I've learned to control it.

It used to be pretty bad. Like, so bad that my friends used to piss me off on purpose just to see me lose my temper. But, like I said, I've learned to control it alot.

Domino Feb 4, 2007 08:44 AM

I have a very bad temper, but it takes a lot for me to release it. I am normally a very laid-back person, so people are surprised when they see me lose my temper. When it is released it takes an awful lot to stop me.

Krelian Feb 4, 2007 09:04 AM

I used to have a pretty nasty temper problem. Like, when I was younger I was waaay tightly strung, and at the slightest sign of someone taking the piss I'd start whaling on someone with all my might (which admittedly wasn't much).

Years of trying my hardest not to react have jaded me. It now takes a lot of effort to irritate me.

I'm actually a rather calm person. The problem is I have an explosive temper. I can go from calm to instantly furious in no time. The good thing is this temporary rage takes only about five seconds to simmer. It mostly happens when I'm driving and someone honks at me for no reason. Well, they have a reason, but I don't find it valid. Luckily I've never had a road rage fight.

Sudden noises can trigger that temporary aggressiveness in me. Anything sudden, especially anything sudden that has no real point. I hate when a motherfucker smashes my door instead of knocking. I hate outbursts, which is why I really don't like hanging around random kids much.

When I was 14 my mother and I made a deal. She would buy me a particular CD in one month. After the month came and I asked her about it she told me some shit like "I DONT HAVE MONEY STOP MESSING WITH ME," completely seemed like she just wanted to back out of her word. I said something to her out of frustration because this was nothing new, and she thinks she needs to pull out her fucking tamale paddle to beat me once again. But I'd had enough and I ripped the thing out of her hand, somehow fracturing her arm. I can tell you from that day on a lot of things changed as far as my attitude towards authority and my relationship with her.

The other way I can snap is if you're arguing with me IRL over something sensitive and you just can't shut the fuck up once I tell you the argument is starting to bother me on another level that I want to avoid. I beat the living shit out of a cell mate for this as some of you that've read my journal know. Once Lenore and I were having an argument and she was across the room and before I knew it I jumped out of my chair, snatched it, and started to hurl it across the room at her. Somehow as I was swinging it I realized I was being a madman but it had too much momentum so I just consciously smashed it against the wall instead, shattering it. It was one of those plastic pool side chairs. Sadly I hit the side of my clenched fist against the wall also and damaged it badly, some sort of fracture. To this day I get some pain from it and that was over five years ago.

Gechmir Feb 4, 2007 04:33 PM

I have a temper, and it tends to break out when I'm being nagged by a few select things:

The Phone
My cat
My brother

The phone is frustrating as shit. We're on the Do Not Call list, but some ass-hats keep calling. If I pick up the phone and hear a two second silence, I hang up.

My cat, or rather my brother's (which he left here) can be one of the most annoying things on earth. I have a pet peeve about the room to my bedroom (where I keep my game systems, TV, and, of course, my bed), where I can't stand for it to be open. Has to be closed while I'm in there doing stuff. Well, if I close the door all the way, the cat will paw and brush at the door nonstop, just so he can come in for five seconds and walk back out. I usually leave some doorstop there so that it doesn't close all the way, but it shuts. Well, the cat will *ram* the door open, leave it wide open, and leave.

In addition to this, he will try hopping into my lap while I'm typing at the computer. He used to stick with Rob (my brother), and Rob alone. But since he left, the cat frequents the living room, where the computer is. The cat will try hopping into my lap, and I have no choice but to pull out the desk drawers to block him off (and he still forces his way up). He will paw at my side or the arm-rest if I block him off, and he'll meow nonstop.

From time to time, it's very cute. But he is like a little child. He will nag NONSTOP, and typically, I'm left flinging him across the room (it's much more harmless than it sounds), leaving him to make a fluffy landing on his favorite pillow. He'll give me a look like "oh. Thanks. Saved me a trip =D" and return to nag me later.

In addition to this, he is a little OCD. If his food bowl is half empty, he wil YOWL. Loudly. If his water bowl hasn't been replaced in twelve hours, he will YOWL. Loudly.

I don't take it out on him, but I find myself squeezing stress balls and glaring a lot thanks to him.

And my brother? That needs no explanation. Most of us can identify with how siblings can be~

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 4, 2007 04:51 PM

GESHmir. You need to find a way to instill fear into this creature's heart. That fucking cat is causing you way too many problems. And why don't you just let that fucker sleep on your lap or something? I have an obnoxious poodle here that does that shit but I just let her sleep there so she can calm the fuck down.

Gechmir Feb 4, 2007 05:02 PM

Double Ought -- THE CAT IS 19 FUCKING YEARS OLD =( Can't instill fear into senile animals. He still runs around like a kitten and is a real prick. If he sits in my lap at the desk, he'll stand up, get in the way, or lick my arms/get in their way. Plus, I shift around often in my seat, and he kinda impairs this.

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 4, 2007 05:03 PM

19 years old? Hang on, gonna check wikipedia (NOT THE MIGHTY GFWIKI) for cat stats.

Holy shit:

In captivity, indoor cats typically live 14 to 20 years, though the oldest-known cat lived to age 36
Well, shift around in your seat aggressively and ignore his tongue. Fucker needs to learn.

Bernard Black Feb 4, 2007 05:24 PM

A 19 year old cat can ram a door open? That's pretty fucking impressive... My brother's cat was eerily similair (although obviously is no super cat). If I was on the computer, she wouldn't just jump on my lap, she'd jump onto the fucking keyboard and type random shit, wandering back and forth expecting attention. If her food-bowl wasn't full enough, she didn't yowl, but she did leap onto the piano and walk up and down it until she was fed. Really really irritating when you're halfway through a piece. Why not put catnip wherever you want him to be?

I used to be good at keeping calm when I was a teenager (odd I know), well except for a few exceptions. The most spectacular was probably the time when these complete dicks started throwing stones and rocks at me and my friends one breaktime (one rock actually badly injured my mate's hand). Deciding that because we were just trying to ignore them and dodge the hail of rocks, one of them picked up this wooden plank and chucked it near us. I was really pissed off at this point so I picked up the plank and ran after them like some sort of rabid animal, and considering there was just me, I was suprised that the 7 of them ran like hell. It all culminated in me chasing one of them down and thumping him repeatedly in the face until teachers broke it up.

Now however I have random surges of rage; I usually thump the wall rather than getting completely out of hand. I've messed up my knuckles thanks to that.

Gechmir Feb 4, 2007 05:35 PM

The open desk drawer only slows him down now. He just goes "okay. I'll jump ON TOP OF THAT."

This cat is gonna break the record. Move over 36'er =(

Good God in that context it sounded like some horrible bondage shit. Damn you.

Identity Crisis Feb 4, 2007 05:43 PM

I'm not easily angered by anybody, really. I've learned to contain my anger because I know that it's not likely I'll be able to win a physical fight. If somebody says something that does irritate me, I'll let them know with a solemn demeanor. If that person in particular doesn't stop, I'll just quietly leave before any feelings of anger escalate. However, on the few instances I do get angry, I tend to get particularly short and snippy. I don't yell or do anything outrageous that I'd otherwise regret.

Hydra Feb 4, 2007 06:25 PM

I have no temper. Even when it's obvious I should be terrifically pissed off ... I just can't feel angry. Mild annoyance is about as bad as it gets ... so in self defence I'll pretend to be angry every now and again just to get people to stop taking advantage of my placidness.

Soluzar Feb 4, 2007 06:54 PM

My temper makes me completely fucking irrational. I'm really glad it doesn't trigger all that often, because I have no sense of self-preservation or fear when I'm mad. I could get myself into any kind of trouble.

Dee Feb 5, 2007 08:55 PM

It normally takes a few blows to hit my temper, but at times I feel overly stressed and easily pissable that anything can set me off (inside). I will tend to ease it off with music and just not mention it ever again. If it's a person I trust and they do something that pisses me off, then I get really really pissed.
