Ahhh WTF happened to gas prices?

I filled my car with gas a little more than a week ago. The gas price was under $2/gal. for regular. When I went to get gas at the end of last week the price per gallon had jumped 20 cents. Since then it has gone up 4 cents.

This makes me wonder where that hydrogen fuel cell is... So in the mean time, has anyone considered another solution to the rising gas prices; whether it is hybrid, smaller gasoline vehicle, diesel, etc? I personally wouldn't mind owning a VW TDI and have considered buying one.

A few months ago I heard something about modifying current gas engines to run on direct injected hydrogen. Has anyone else hear anything about this?

There's no real rhyme or reason as to why the gas prices fluctuate as they do. Just be thankful you don't have to pay the same as Europe.

This reminds me of some whacky website I got linked to earlier today.

Check it out: http://www.willyoujoinus.com/

Just imagine if gas ever got as expensive as milk! I always try to keep in mind that no matter how bad gas prices are, there is always some other practical item that costs more.

stormshadow Mar 13, 2006 06:32 PM

I haven't changed my driving habits or car. I drive a full sized SUV and fill up about every 5 days or so. Costs me about $40 per fill up. Have thought about getting a new economic car, but then it would be car payments on top of buying gas.

Neogin Mar 13, 2006 06:33 PM

I'm lucky it's under $2.00. I can't even imagine what the prices would be in the next 20 years, >_<

Where the fuck do you live where it's "just under" $2.00.

Besides heaven, of course.

Gechmir Mar 13, 2006 06:42 PM

Well, it hit a floor of $2.05 around here and has been around there if not ten cents higher.

Merv -- there are some places that are still paying very little for gas. There's a joint in Canada. Can't remember the city x_X But some poster here mentioned when the gas prices boomed that his prices weren't even rattled.

Fleshy Fun-Bridge Mar 13, 2006 06:56 PM

It could be worse. Some people pay prices like that per litre.

A gallon of whole milk cost me 1.98 yesterday.

Merv: I live in Oregon and it had been at 1.95-2.02 a gallon 2-3 weeks ago.

Wah Wah Wah. People whine every time, yet we pay a quarter what the rest of the world pays.

What we NEED is to go back to gas rationing. Taxes won't work because rich people don't care. Limit people to 5 gallons of gas a week and FORCE them to start conserving and carpooling. People are too dumb to care about the future.

So just because the rest of the world has shitty prices, it is ok that we get stuck in the eye just that much more with the price of the gas?

What we need in a solution, not a jackass holding the country hostage with gas ration. Besides I can't get to and from work on 5 gallons a week, I currently use 10 gallons a week in my eco Civic DX and I only live 20 miles from my work. I know people who drive more than twice that to get to work.

Mucknuggle Mar 13, 2006 07:36 PM

Be happy you don't live in Montreal. Gas here is ridiculous. Likewise, I'm happy that I'm not in Europe because gas there is even more expensive than it is here.

Gumby Mar 13, 2006 07:43 PM

You are about 3000 miles from where I am. So what makes your guys prices so much higher there?

J-Man Mar 13, 2006 07:51 PM

In Vancouver, the gas prices change about 5 times each day, at every location, with very little pattern. Theres a segment on a radio channel that tells us where the gas is cheapest in the city.

Jiraiya Mar 13, 2006 07:56 PM

Where the hell do you live where its under 2 dollars a gallon? Here its at a level 2.30-2.60 a gallon.

See, shit like that would piss me off. Luckily it only changes once a day at most.

I think a lot of the price fluctuations between states has to do with taxes and laws regarding environmental standards. It's annoying that Maryland has higher prices than its neighbors (PA, NJ, NC, VA (outside of DC)).

Five gallons a week per family? Per family member? Every family travels differently. Five gallons a week would be a burden to people like my father. He communtes from B/CS to Hearne every day (30 mile drive) and has to keep an eye on an almost 10,000 acre farm partnership. How could he make do on such little gas? How about the people who live out of the urban regions in suburbs who have to commute to urban regions daily? How fair is it that they get so little gas and meanwhile, folks who go almost nowhere across a week get to stock up on gas? Rationing gas isn't the way to go.

One reason gas prices are so high is also due to mixes and regulations each state wants to meet. Get a few types of national fuels, eliminate state-to-state mixtures and prices would drop by $0.20 easy. That is a good chunk of the processing, in fact.

doyeon Mar 13, 2006 08:11 PM

2.45 in LA. Right when i get out of LA, prices start to decrease into the 2.20's. I see a trend.

Heh heh! That hydrogen fuel cell died between the time you posted the original topic and the time it took for me to respond. I think the longest a hydrogen fuel cell has lived is roughly 48 hours.

I've heard that Toyota make's the best hybrids. With one of their newer bybrids able to get up to 60 miles a gallon. Usually a average of 40 mpg. Next time I get a vehicle I'll probably look into that.

Wow, where the hell do you live? Regular gas here is like 2.43 on a good day.

There was an article about the Oil Sands in Alberta. There's enough untapped oil there to last all of North America over 50 years. It's estimated that the oil reserves there are 2nd only to Saudi Arabia, and may even be more.

And yet, every day gas gets more expensive. Although, here in Nova Scotia it's $.94 a litre, which isn't TOO bad I guess.

I wish we had that. Here in New Zealand, it's roughly $1 US per LITRE.

And there's your answer. Producing oil from tar sands is not cheap or practical. Might be faesible in the future. Just not right now.
