Best Romance Story?
What game(s) do you think have the best romance story?~ :o
|
Any game from KID is an automatic win. Too bad only one title was localized here: Ever17.
|
Hmm, I meant like an RPG. :\
Like FFX or something. |
I thought Yuri in Shadow Hearts 2 was interesting. Maybe not his thing with Karen slowly developing, but maybe moreso how much he missed Alice. I love how he blocked it out, and at one point, it gets shoved in his face and he ends up breaking down. Thought it was really powerful =D
Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue are high-rankers for romance stories, as well. Their remakes for the PS1 were incredibly well-done, and I suggest people look them up (either domestically or via roms). |
I'll second either of the Lunar games. Both were very well done.

This should be in the RPG forum then. Successful thread you've got going here. |
For me, it has to be Locke/Celes.
|
Well, yeah. >_> Any type of game, even a fighting game. Not a dating sim game, though.

To be fair, so many games are lacking in good romance. Sure they might have characters getting together, but often the writing or setups leave a lot to be desired (*cough*FF8*cough*).
I like Grandia myself. I think it's because I played it so very long ago, but even today it's charming. It had two very likeable protagonists falling in love and overcoming hardships to be together. Plus Feena was older than Justin, which was a slight change of pace for once. Games like Grim Fandango and FFVI are slightly more subtle about their romances, but they're still there to enjoy. I also really liked Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. To this day it still has one of best told romance stories of two characters meeting and slowly developing feelings for each other. |
I thought Sega really went to town witht he facinating story of love that unfolded in Sonic on 360. The bit wehre sonic died and she brought him back to life with a kiss was possibly the most stunning moment in the history of art.
Ok I'm sorry. I agree with Qwarky though. Sands of Time's love story was perfectly executed. I especially liked the way it took into account their idle animations. eg. At the beginning of the game she'd tell you off for lingering around or complain if he felt you were perving on her. By the end, I remember we were riding in some lift and nothing much was happening so I was looking about in first person. She's liek "your eyes.... they're green." It worked well through how subtle it was. And the ending was classic. |
Panzer Dragoon Saga, the story of Edge and Azel (spoilers)
The first time Edge sees Azel he thinks she's beautiful. His chances don't really look good, however, after they fail to 'hit it off' during their first encounter. She's a synthetic lifeform who's been programmed to kill him. Later on, they get into a spot of bother and they have to help each other to survive. Azel gets some glimpses of what humanity can be from the sensitive Edge. But she still has to kill him. Then an accident befalls Azel, and Edge is the one who has to save her. Edge patches everything up with Azel's master, which does well to clear the air between all parties concerned. But then tragedy strikes, and Azel loses her purpose. She starts to question why she was created in the shape of a human, and a really cute one, too. Players at home can guess. Then she discovers a new purpose, one she chose for herself with her newfound human emotions. She's not a soulless drone anymore, everybody! So Edge and Azel go off together to save the world by the power of their love for each other. A really cool looking dragon that can shoot lasers helps out a bit too. The mission a success, the world saved, Edge and Azel go off together and live happily ever after and have loads of kids. Not really. Edge actually gets sucked into some weird nether realm, and Azel is left roving the planet, forever in search of him. Credits. |
I think having the ability to take your spouse out to eat, or fucking PIMP her ass in Fallout 2 has to be pretty romantic.
I kid, but really, when it comes to the whole romance scene, not a lot of games do em right. As much of a FF7 fan I am, I'm glad no one has mentioned anything from there. Oddly enough, if Capcom plays their cards right with the Residen Evil series, there quite possible could be something good going on with Ada and Leon, but that's a floating hope I'm afraid :/ tho, even though it was circumstancial, Claire and (the annoying shrill) Steve had some moments. |
Of everything I've played recently, I'd have to say 'Sands of Time' too.
|
lol Grail.
Leon is the most wooden character of all time, he communitcates in grunts. Ada is never touching him. I've been trying to think up good examples but I keep getting HORRIBLE ones. Like fucking, Meryl and Snake in MGS. God that was shocking. As was those two forgettable characters in Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy, I was pretty much throwing stuff at the TV screen during the sex scene. |

You're only saying that because you would have banged Ashley or whatever her name is at the end of 4 just like the rest of us...despite the god-awful ears >:| |

Fahrenheit went to shit beyond one point. It had WHOA SEXSCENE OUTTA NOWHERE. It was a fantastic game. Then somewhere, the writers said "fuck it." But back to topic, I'd also like to tag on Metal Gear Solid 3. Even though it's a mother-son relationship of sorts, the story of MGS3 was gorgeous involving Boss and Snake. A game never has gotten me that close to watery-eyed before. Even the romantic relationship itself in the game is wonderful. |
I personally think the first Shadow Hearts had a better romance story than Covenant. Especially when you get all the extra little side stories and the bad ending just KILLED me:
Spoiler:
I also liked the little romance bits in Breath of Fire IV, but I think it's because they were horribly depressing and kinda shocking ^^;; |
