Duke Nukem Forever: 2007?

It's that time of the decade again!
News about the most anticipated video game in the history of mankind:
Quote:

The sequel to Duke Nukem 3D is PC gaming myth, lore and legend. 3D Realms has been supposedly working on the game for more than a decade now, yet we've seen so little about the project that it's hard to believe they'd done anything but Sudoku puzzles. Was Sudoku even around when they started working on Duke Nukem Forever? I can't get it straight anymore.

To prove the skeptics wrong, 3D Realms president George Broussard randomly posted a thumbnail-sized screen shot from the game on the Shacknews message boards. Georgey says it's in-game, but they've also said the game will be released some day, so take it with the appropriate grain of salt:

Not happening.

People have been saying this every year since god knows when. I'll believe it when I see actual proof or hear an official announcement.

edit: Okay, scepticism suspended!

Soluzar Jan 26, 2007 03:26 PM

Is anyone even remotely going to care? I kind of enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D, and I still have it on my shelves somewhere... but it's been a long time... games moved on, and there are a million and one FPS to play these days.

Aardark Jan 26, 2007 03:27 PM

yeah dude, i think if they were releasing the game, a 200x125 GIF would be exactly what they'd use to make the announcement, so this is probably real!

Bradylama Jan 26, 2007 05:43 PM

If they actually had something, this would go beyond Daikatana levels of industry incompetence.

evilboris Jan 26, 2007 07:58 PM

This would force me to buy a new videocard the same way as the Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga sequel will force me to buy a x360.

Grail Jan 27, 2007 10:28 AM

People just want to know how far you can go with strippers this time around, that's about it.

"HOLY SHIT, AUTHENTIC V-GAME BREASTS!!!!! No more 2-D or fake japanese ones for me! Duke's the winner, hands down." - Everyone waiting for Duke Forever.

Gechmir Jan 27, 2007 11:12 AM

I thought Duke Nukem 3D was a fantastic game =D Unsure why! Maybe because it and the expansion was HUUUUUGE.

Things might just be a waste of money though. Hopefully the project has just been idled for some time, because spending TEN YEARS worth of cash on a title is kind of a rough thing on your wallet, no matter what the industry.

Also, the link to the forums (to Gamasutra) doesn't work for the new screenshots =I

Aardark Jan 27, 2007 12:06 PM

What new screenshots?

Gechmir Jan 27, 2007 12:14 PM

Krelian's post links to a forum with some dude linking to some screenshots. But the link fails.

Scratch that. In-game shot. Either way, bad link.

Link works now. It's just one shot -- the one in this thread. IGNORE ME~ =U

Aardark Jan 27, 2007 12:17 PM

I don't think there were any other screenshots, just the same thumbnail of an action figure that's in the first post.

Gechmir Jan 27, 2007 12:27 PM

Yeah, I noticed, like, right after I posted '~'

I'm sure there are some "new screenshots" from 1999 lol ;D

If this ever does come out, it'll flop I'm sure. It'd be raw eye-candy like Prey. FPS games need gameplay, and hopefully, they will receive a decent story. Half-life is the only FPS I can think of that developed an interesting story, to be honest... Or good voice acting.

Farcry still makes me cringe.

Matt Jan 27, 2007 05:32 PM

Gamespot ran a story yesterday wherein they spoke to George Broussard, da prez of 3D REALMS.
Quote:

"Yes, that was me and that's an in-game, real-time shot of Duke standing in a random hallway," Broussard said. "I just stuck it on a Gamasutra ad to make it stand out from the sea of company logos and maybe act as a small teaser."

As for whether or not this marks the beginning of a marketing push for Duke Nukem Forever that would see more information unveiled in the near future, Broussard said there is nothing official yet.

"We tend to just do unconventional things in terms of PR," he said. "But we're starting to wake from our slumber and think about when and how best to show the game."
Maybe they'll release some footage soon. OMG.

Sinister Jan 28, 2007 08:38 AM

I gave up all hope of this game being released a few years ago, and it's going to take a hell of a lot more than a tiny screenshot to remove my skepticism that this game will ever be released. Personally, in my opinion, until 3D Realms actually put out a statement giving the game a firm release date, this game doesn't exist.

Who cares, as long as it's fun. I liked Duke because it was a good ol' fashioned "kick ass, take names, and that's it" shooting game. No story to speak of, just an old school fun time. If it comes out, I would at the very least expect it to be good old school fun.

It's like Duke says - Time to kick ass and chew bubblegum... And I'm all out of gum

Gechmir Jan 28, 2007 12:24 PM

If the story sucks, it'll need good gameplay =p Hope for wonderful physics and lotsa fun ways to kill stuff. I know that storyline isn't an epic part of the Duke Nukem series. Been playing 'em since the first! =U

Someone else said it before the Duke. I think it might have been a pro wrestler. Even they might not have been the first.

Sparkster Jan 31, 2007 03:17 PM

gah, why does Duke look this weird? D:

I mean, they butchered the ultra-macho design for something... I can't even recognise. D:

errrrrr.... is that even Duke Nukem? I'm not sure anymore.

Also, I just hope Duke Nukem forever won't be the next Daikatana...

but I guess there's hope; I mean, it took 10 years for Prey to show up...

Hey now, you have to give Prey some credit.
After all, it was discontinued, then re-started with another development team on a totally different engine. I think all they kept was the portal technology, but even that was altered and enhanced.

Duke, on the other hand, has been in development with the same team (for all we know).

Zakiller2000 Feb 3, 2007 11:19 PM

That photo looks like a strange Duke action figure... :annoyed:

Eh, we'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

*pulls out watch*

When I looked up information on Duke Nukem Forever earlier I found a bunch of posts on random sites with people basically saying stuff like "if this game would have come out 7 years ago it would have been something, now nobody cares"; lots o negative responses like that.

I guess it just baffles me; I mean the more games that come out the merrier right? And if it turns out to be a sweet game then I might have to check it out lol

Just wanted to get that out lol
So now for the cool stuff,

Found that picture and loved the style, that's the real reason I posted ~
Oh and when I was looking around I read up on the Duke3D High Resolution Pack; pretty sweet for nostalgia, it's a free project people keep updating, to make Duke3d play with today's computers with improved graphics etc~
http://www.duke4.net/news.php
looks like v3 of the pack will be released in a couple weeks?
