Modchip
A quick question regarding modchips. I don't have a clue what chip is inside the PS2, and I can't look up instructions on how to get games running. It seems that booting the PS2, insertering the DVD and then resetting makes some PS2 games run, but the copy of Gran Turismo that came with the PS2 doesn't want to load (perhaps the DVD is just unreadable)? According to a friend, I have to hold the powerbutton until two lights are burning, but no matter how long I hold it, it won't show me two lights.
So anyway, is GT4 just broken, or do I need some very special method? |
Is that a burned version of the game, or original? Gran Turismo 4 is supposed to be on DVD9 (dual layer), so that's probably the problem.

Yeah, we use GT4 at work to test if a PS2's disc reading is busted or not. If it can read GT4, it can read anything.
As for modchips, they usually use an interface of clicking or holding the button down. My chip has three modes: PS2, PS1/DVD and Off. I either turn on the console normally for PS2 mode, hold the power button for a short moment for PS1/DVD mode, or hold the button till the lights and background opening animation shows on screen for the chip to be turned off. If the GT4 is a burned copy, it could be that it won't start on a single layer disc, or then it simply won't work on that chip/console. For instance, a friend of mine has the same chip as I do (we got them chipped at the same time, at the same shop) and his won't read TDK DVD-Rs or +Rs while mine does. On the other hand, Boo has an older chipped PS2 and his won't read a bought copy of Frequency. |
It's a burned copy. I got it to run, but then it's so slow it's not fun (as in - it takes so long to load I just stop).

You could always invest in a network adapter and an IDE hard drive and get HDLoader working. If your modchip supports DEV1/DEV2 mode then you should be able to get a lot of games, including GT4, working from the hard drive.
All of which assumes this is the chunky PS2. |
I don't plan on spending money on a new HD + network adapter, when I just ordered 100 DVDs :p

Some GT4 scene releases ware still detecting mod-chip. If you have name of your chip under Playstation 2 logo on start and it says Ripper I know how to help you. If not than you have to open your PS2 to identified your chip or mod it again with new one. Some chips like Matrix Infinity have special Menu that allow you to update it from CD just like Ripper. I couldn't play GT4 on DVD5 on Ripper 3.2U but after flashing it to 3.41 it works fine!

Somebody on "old" Gamingforce posted a link (http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2version.htm) which contained a list of all PS2 versions. I think GT4 worked on version 4 and above.

For GT4 it was all about anti-chip protection that was applied in to the game. It was stopping right after making save file. Then black screen and nothing more. It's all about mod chip. So better find what chip do you have.
