Sadness (Revolution)

Sadness is a Revolution title being developed by NIBRIS. It is going to be a "gothic" horror.

“All I can say now is that it [Sadness] is going to be a gothic horror which will scare not with the amount of blood but sheer atmosphere. Imagine a game in which you do not use guns or knives but you will have to protect yourself with the objects you find exploring the ground – a stone, a stick, etc.”

“Some examples of using the controller – you swing a torch with it to scare the rats off, you slit the throat (controller as a piece of glass of a knife); if you want to climb the wall you will have to hook a rope over the piece of a wall sticking out (controller serving as a lasso). And this is only the beginning. The game will be for single player and single player only. For an adult player with strong nerves. Let me mention that the scenario will have associations with narcolepsy, nyctophobia and paranoid schizophrenia. The scenario will surprise you.”

All I can say is, Nintendo is going to bust out of the "kiddie" mold with the Revolution.

I will DEFINITELY get this game. Even if it doesn't live up to hype, it will STILL be fun. It'd probably be as if Shadowgate and Manhunt had an intimate love child.

Dyne Mar 13, 2006 01:04 PM

As positive about the Revolution as I am, I will have to wait to see the final product before I make any judgement about it.

Ryunam Mar 13, 2006 01:09 PM

This is intriguing, to say the least. I love when they combine the element of visual horror with the perturbances of the human mind. It's an effective mixture that produces nifty results even in a gaming environment - a blatant example of this is Silent Hill and its allusively sexual themes.

It's also exciting that this is being developed for the Revolution. A proper use of the innovative controller will no doubt make the experience much more immersive and of striking impact.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 13, 2006 01:22 PM

Interesting indeed. That slitting of throats will come under a lot of scrutiny though, and might not be in the final game.

It just sounds like something a publisher is bound to shy away from, but then that depends on the publisher. Seeing as there doesn't seem to be a confirmed publisher as of yet, anything can happen.

Prinnydood Mar 13, 2006 06:32 PM

Definately sounds interesting. I thought Eternal Darkness was pretty creepy at times when I played it, but this sounds even better.

Chaotic Mar 13, 2006 06:43 PM

Sounds like Condemned but even better. When I get a Revolution, i'm defenitely going for this.

NovaX Mar 13, 2006 07:01 PM

I agree, this game definately intrigues me and if it turns out half-way decent, it will be a buy in my books.

Helloween Mar 13, 2006 09:16 PM

I'm still on the prowl for a good survival horror game, now that i'm done Resident Evil. I guess i'll take a stab at Silent Hill while i'm waiting for this one.

No screens? The description sounds pretty amazing, but no matter how good it sounds, it's still an advertisment, and is not to be trusted.

Summonmaster Mar 13, 2006 10:29 PM

Sounds like you'd need sufficient space to play.
I know I'm going to flailing the controller about wildly if it involves slitting throats of things that pop out of nowhere.

Wall Feces Mar 13, 2006 10:29 PM

The concept alone is fucking perfect for the Rev. Games like this will make the Rev the most worthwhile system on the market.

Throat-slitting sounds fun, but it will catch so much flak from cunts like Jack Thompson that it will most likely be removed in the end. Regardless, I am pumped, even if it is just an ad.

I doubt it will be removed in the end.

If Nintendo is getting third party support to the extreme like this, then yes, the Revolution will at least finish second and may even prove to at least touch ground with Sony at the end of this cycle.

Hybrid Hunter Mar 18, 2006 12:10 AM

Lets hope it translate from paper and onto the Revolution well. Glad we aren't seeing a typical thriller/horror game too!

Lucas-AMN Mar 18, 2006 12:11 AM

This sounds like:

40% Eternal Darkness
30% Resident Evil
20% Gothic Inspired Mental Thriller
10% Snuff Movie

I'm sold.

chaofan Mar 18, 2006 12:19 AM

Here's hoping they have enough power to create an atmosphere rival to that of Condemned. That game seems pretty scary.

But I think this game represents developers' opinions to Nintendo. Is it a good thing? Yah. The only problem with Nintendo's Gamecube were fanboys buying Nintendo only games (which pretty much pissed off third-parties). If this thread is any indication of Nintendo fans accepting third party games then yes, Sony'll have trouble. They seem to have trouble with PS3 atm.

If done right, I'm sure this would overthrow Silent Hill's reign in the gothic horror genre.

Especially if you're using shards of glass and other shit to kill creatures.

Narcolepsy... schizophrenia.... COUNT ME IN.

And, I think you're right. Sony MAY actually have trouble this time around.

chaofan Mar 18, 2006 09:03 AM

Shame that Silicon Knights ain't making a game for Revo... Eternal Darkness would've been SWEET on it (ED was severly underrated, IMO)

Van Mar 18, 2006 04:37 PM

Sounds intiguing. While I'm not an avid fan of the survival horror genre, they do have an odd way of catching my eye when they're released.

The game definitely has me looking forward to the many uses this controller will have. It won't be long after the Revolution's launch that Sony and Microsoft will be releasing a new peripheral for their respective systems; one that promises to offer the same level of interactivity.

Technophile Mar 18, 2006 05:48 PM

I don't wanan say it's great yet without even seeing a single screenshot, (why don't you have some sort of a source or link Reznor? ) but I have to say that if this lives up to the impression conveyed from that quote (state to us by mystery-person), then it's gonna kick major ass.

...anyone still think the revo controler's a bad idea?:revolution:

Oh boy if they do I'll grab a piece of glass and cut their necks like a crazy Nintendo fanboy LOL!

Wasn't there some Microsoft thing where they utilise some sort of remote control? See? The idea's being embraced by the other companies already!

J-Man Mar 18, 2006 10:49 PM

I sure hope it's not one of those horrible horror games where all you cet to weild is a meager flashlight. Fucking Luigi's Mansion...

I am no mystery-person. Besides, if you don't trust me, you have a computer, the internet, and Google obviously. I'm not here to prove anything to anyone.

Don't you mean Flashlight 3?

The mistery person remark wasn't referring to you Reznor. It's just that your post didn't really state who said the comments in quotes. Was it one of the game desighners? Producer? President of the company? etc.

Also, providing a link or a source with a story is just good internet etiquette come on now. Even renowned gaming sites provide some sort of a source unless they're personally interviewing someone.

Anyway, thanks for the info, the game sounds sweet. :)

DjMeas Mar 19, 2006 02:31 AM

Sounds like very good concepts for a horror game ^_^ especially
with the nifty controller. I can't wait to see screen shots or a demo.

............................

If you thought Luigi's mansion was an attempt at a horror game, then you're lost.

The more and more i think about "Sadness" the more and more i think about how it's gonna look. The more i do that, the more i optimize it for my own tastes. The more than happens, the more i drift away from what the game is really gonna be, and opens the way for "WTF, this isn't what i had in mind at all."

This is why i hate hearing about games before screens and the whatnot.

Jay Fox R.W.S. Mar 19, 2006 06:14 PM

This game is probably so far away that it's not even worth discussing.
