Woman kills herself holding her wee for a wii

A local radio station in my area was holding a contest with a Wii as the prize. All you had to do was drink as much water as you can without going to the bathroom. Then this lady dies from water intoxication. Good one!

Preliminary autopsy findings concluded a Rancho Cordova woman who competed in a radio station water-drinking contest before she was found dead Friday showed signs consistant with water intoxication, Sacramento County Coroner's Office authorities said Saturday.

The results of a preliminary investigation released Saturday showed evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death" in the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Strange, Sacramento County assistant coroner Ed Smith said.

Smith said the autopsy found no traces of "life threatening medical conditions" that would have otherwise explained Strange's sudden death.

Strange, 28, was found dead inside her Astral Drive home in Rancho Cordova Friday afternoon. Her death came just hours after Strange participated in a radio station KDND 107.9 The End contest, testing contestants to drank as much water as they could without going to the bathroom.

The winner of the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest would take home a new Nintendo Wii video game system.

Strange's co-worker at Radiological Associates of Sacramento Laura Rios said Strange participated in the contest Friday morning, then was heading home when she reportedly called her supervisor in terrible pain.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," Rios said. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

The supervisor called Strange's mother, who went to her daughter's home and discovered the body.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran confirmed Strange's death Friday, but said there were no immediate grounds to begin an investigation.

According to contest participants, 17 to 20 contestants took part in the competition in a room at KDND's Madison Avenue studios. The contest broadcast during The End's Morning Rave program began around 6:15 a.m. as contestants were each handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

Fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland said he met Strange at the event and had no idea of the potential danger of water poisoning. "They were small little half-pint bottle so we thought it was going to be easy," Ybarra said. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health in risk."

But after 90 minutes of drinking, Ybarra decided he had had enough. "I tapped (out) after five (bottles)," Ybarra said. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore."

Ybarra said after he quit, the remaining contestents were given even larger bottles to drink to stay in the competition. Strange was still in the contest when he opted out.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

Ybarra said before the contest, he did not read a liability waiver form handed to him by station personnel before signing it. Ybarra said he was surprised by the physical toll he felt after the contest.

"I was kind of out of it yesterday. I was just drained. I was just going to the bathroom," Ybarra said. "I wasn't feeling well and I actually fell asleep. I woke up with a headache (Saturday) morning and then took a couple of aspirins."

Ybarra said he was unaware of any medical personnel on hand to monitor the contest.

In a brief written statement issued Saturday, Entercom Sacramento VP and market manager John Geary expressed sympathy for Strange's family.

"We were stunned when we heard the news," Geary said. "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred."

"They should have had a physician there, some type of statement or as to this can kill you. You can die from this," Strange's friend and co-worker Tracy Beam said. "People have died from this before and here we are. We don't have our Jennifer."

"I believe everyone should just be fired and let go from that radio station," Beam said. "It should be the end of The End."

The radio station should have known the effects of holding so much water in your body. I feel sorry for the woman's kids =/

franposis Jan 13, 2007 09:12 PM

It seems irrelevant... But did she even win the Wii?
And will the liability waiver mean her family won't be able to get compensation?
That sucks, especially for her three kids :(

When I first saw the title of this thread, I immediately pictured an overzealous Wii fan killing herself in anticipation of getting a Wii. How silly of me. It's a pretty unfortunate way for a person to die, however I can't place to much judgment, 'cause according to the video in that youtube link posted, no link has been made, that "link" being whether or not the water-drinking contest had anything to do with the death (but it's hard to think it isn't to blame).

An extraordinarily idiotic contest made by an idiotic radio station. How could they have not been aware of the dire consequences which can ensue from drinking superfluous amounts of water without using a toilet?

A strange death for poor Jennifer Strange.

The fact that these people (both the radio station people and the contestants) didn't even know how dangerous this was is just baffling. I mean, can they really be that stupid as to have never heard of water intoxication? I wouldn't really blame the station though, since it's not like she was forced to compete or anything.

And really, if she was feeling that much pain immediately afterwards, she was most likely feeling pain during the contest, so she should have quit sooner. I really see it more as being her fault than the station's, though they're not toally guilt-free either.

Spoiler:
Who are we kidding, we all know it's Nintendo's fault for naming it Wii.

This is truly unfortunate. This is just a prime example of how crazy people are to do something for a brand new video game system especially if it has the potential of being free. This woman was probably not aware of the dangers of holding in a lot of liquid within your system, and it was probably the station's responsibility to let them know of all possible concerns.

I do agree that their probably should of been a physician to let people know the dangers of holding a vast amount of fluid within your body without going to the bathroom. Despite signing the liability clause this is not going to be the last we hear from this story, and there is going to be some kind of potential lawsuit.

I do pity the kids actually because their mom tried to get them something they wanted to enjoy but she had to pay the ultimate price. I don't care how much I want a piece of new age technology, I am not going to put myself through hell to get it.

I would like to have a wii as well, but I have patience I'll wait for them to be a little easier to get in stock. I just think we have to stop putting ourselves through mental and physical abuse just to get a hard to get piece of technology.

Its kind of unfortunate how different mediums of commercial society love to exploit our needs and wants to get the latest piece of technology on the market.

Wow, sounds like NEStendo really needs to hurry up with the localization of their Common Sense Training game! Whatever happened to just getting people to jump around on stage like a retard with your pants falling down in front of a heap of people to win video game shit? That's how I got Metroid Fusion. :]

I've heard of people dying from this condition before. Usually extacy users who drank way too much because the drug made them feel hot, so they drank too much to compensate.

I never heard of anyone dying like this for some competition though. The poor woman was only trying to do what she thought was best for her kids too.

Yeah, that's what happened to you when you take ecstasy I believe. This is just another sad example of hydrogen dioxide at its worst.

Eeep. I tried to spell Ecstasy five times before just going with a spelling at random. I feel shame now. There were a few extremely high profile deaths here in the UK, when use of Ecstasy was at its peak. Fortunately(?) cocaine use seems to be more prevalent now, and causing a lot less deaths.

Summonmaster Jan 13, 2007 11:48 PM

This is hard to comment on.
On the one hand, you can see that the woman was doing it for her kids selflessly, but on the other hand, she really should have stopped when feeling pain. It's rather unfortunate either way.

Tortalius Jan 14, 2007 12:55 AM

um Hydrogen dioxide is H02 dihydrogen oxide would be H20

Assuming you meant water by that Jack.

Ryuu Jan 14, 2007 01:07 AM

I'm depressed for the kids. I assume the radio station gave them the Wii, but to lose your mother like that has to be depressing.

Like, how could the radio station NOT understand that excessive amounts of anything in the body is bad for you. And they might not have even had a physician on hand (I would think a physician wouldn't have even allowed the contest to take place) is just stupid.

Temari Jan 14, 2007 01:11 AM

I'm wondering the same thing as Franposis... did she win the Wii? I mean, yes, her death is sad and silly, but if she lost, then how much water did the person who won the Wii actually drink? And how is it affecting his/her health? Hope people have been checking on the other contestants, at least...

Drex Jan 14, 2007 01:18 AM

It doesn't surprise me that something like this could happen - water poisoning isn't all that well known despite the few high-profile deaths (as in they hit the news, at least) that have been caused by it. And I don't think you'd feel the effects hit until some time after you've taken in a life-threatening amount. Saying that she should have stopped when she felt pain is kinda pointless, because she wouldn't have felt the signs of water intoxication until it was really dangerous. Any other pain would have been purely bladder pain, I think.

I hope there's some sort of compensation for the family despite the waiver.

Sandy Jan 14, 2007 03:07 AM

As a water-lover, I think I'm going to the bathroom after seeing this.

That's really unfortunate. :/

JackyBoy Jan 14, 2007 04:17 AM

I feel obligated to clarify the confusion. This woman didn't die because she was "holding" her pee. She died of poisoning caused by the water. Let me put this another way. She would still very likely have died even if she had "relieved" herself. Water in large quantities is bad for you regardless if you pee or not. Be careful of how much water you consume is my advice.

America rocks. Seriously, what's the next assignment? To drink as much shampoo as you can without bubbles coming out of your mouth?

Lizardcommando Jan 14, 2007 05:33 AM

That's a fucked up way to die. I feel sorry for the kids she left behind. :(

LS Jan 14, 2007 06:05 AM

What a tragedy, owned like hell.

Spyder 232 Jan 14, 2007 06:18 AM

When i saw this, i thought you was joking. I'd have just bought one insted of doing that.

Well uhh yeah I mean if I knew before that I was going to die, I guess I would have bought one instead as well (?)

Bigblah Jan 14, 2007 07:17 AM

You'd think the danger of water poisoning would be more well-known, considering that we take in that substance every day.

munchkin13 Jan 14, 2007 07:20 AM

That is horrible. I feel really sorry for the kids too. I hope they get some something from the radio station despite the wavier. The people who actually thought of the stupid game should get fired because of their stupidity.
But I want to know too, did she win the Wii?
