US raids Iranian consular office in Iraq
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6251167.stm
Since the 1963 Geneva Accord on Consulates, consulates are sovereign ground and thus we have just invaded Iran. I'm honestly a bit confused. It's clear that the Executive Branch wants to surge in Iraq, straining our forces even more. So why this at the same time? Why, exactly, does he think that this won't completely cause the entire Middle East to blow up? |
This might be a risky move intended to further spur on the impeachment of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, provided that this article is at all reliable:
http://www.adnki.com/index_2Level_En...74527125&par=0 It sounds like members of parliament are dissatisfied with the obstinate, aggressive, and anti-western attitude of his administration, which in turn has been hurting them with UN sanctions. If thats not the case, I too cannot fathom why on earth they would do such a thing. |

I'm also changing the title in question to something that doesn't suggest that the U.S. has just blitzed Iran. |
Yeah I was about to say... Let's change the thread title.

Actually, we're not even sure it's a consular either ...

Watch how you use buzzwords, niki. You might end up doing comics about them.

I'm fine with us taking moves that could help keep our troops out of harms way. If these people (and as far as I've read, they are diplomats but not subject to immunity) are trying to take out Americans, I'm fine with this action.
What is weird...when I was listening to NPR this morning, it sounded like the Kurds were absolutely furious with us. Apparently, we went into their relatively peaceful town with loud helicopters and guns blazing and didn't even tell them that we were going to be there, let alone what we were doing. When the Kurds went to the field commander to ask what was going on, we wouldn't tell them. They've been pretty darn good allies to us, I wonder why we at least wouldn't be cordial before tearing up a city that is hardly Baghdad. |
We have been in a cold war with Iran since a few months after we invaded Iraq. When a nation invades a send its citizens and through is terrority sends soliders who attack US soliders and they also fund thoughs soilders. By international law that is a delciartion of war.

First off, there is no evidence of the Iranian government officially sending citizens into Iraq. Secondly, there is no such International Law. Keep in mind that we never declared war on Vietnam, for example. |
