Yeah, so I didn't see a thread for this, which surprised me. Today on the bus I was reading the paper and there was a tiny story about George Lucas and Spielberg announcing that they're done with the script and shooting starts this summer.

Off to the internet I go to find evidence for the doubters.

In a long-awaited announcement, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg revealed today that the fourth installment of Indiana Jones will begin production in June 2007. Harrison Ford returns in his role as the daring Dr. Jones for the new adventure. The film will be produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., directed by Steven Spielberg and released by Paramount Pictures throughout the world in May 2008.

The screenplay has been written by David Koepp.

Spielberg states "George, Harrison and I are all very excited. We feel that the script was well worth the wait. We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones."

The film will be produced by Frank Marshall with George Lucas and Kathy Kennedy as executive producers. "Working with Steven, Frank, Kathy and the Indy crew is like working with family," states Lucas. "These films are such great fun to make. I'm looking forward to reuniting with the team and starting this new journey."

The film has plenty of action in store for the rogue archeologist. Harrison Ford comments "I'm delighted to be back in business with my old friends. I don't know if the pants still fit but I know the hat will. "

It will be shot on undisclosed locations around the world as well as in the United States.

For more than 25 years, audiences have been enraptured by the exploits of Indiana Jones. The film trilogy -- Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade -- garnered 14 Academy Award nominations, won 7 Oscars, and grossed over $1,182,000,000 at the box office. The films are among the most popular films ever made and have become a legendary part of film history.

Lucas apparently says "It's fantastic. It'll be the best Indy yet". Ok, so Ford is 65, but I am still so thrilled, I just want to see how it'll turn out, whether good or bad.

Dammit, I was hoping that Indy would be the father and he would have a son (or daughter!?) along for the ride. I suppose they might still do that, which would be much better than just having a 65-year-old Indy leaping around in some random jungle.

I do love these movies, but what I would love even more is if Hollywood would get off their lazy fat ass and stop trying to suck every 'film franchise' from the 80s/90s for every ounce of popularity it has. There are about 349845 books that would be amazing to adapt into competent, good films (provided they didn't butcher the original story/ideas beyond belief) -- yet they insist on relying on past successful films for the present.

As much as I hate leeching off of series of movies or reviving old greats, Rocky Balboa was fucking dynamite. And this has the personnel to be just as promising. Won't guarantee it, but I've got a feeling that it'll be just fine. Personally, I'm curious about the plot. When I see Indiana Jones, I always think "nazis" =p

Yeah, right now I am filled with enthusiasm, but mostly a lot of curiosity. I just want to see what they'll do with it. How far they will take it. The originals are hardly politically correct in this time and age, so it'll be interesting to see what they'll dare to do this time around.

I'm sure it'll have a message about global warming.

Seriously though, I almost thought this was a joke when I heard about it, and even then I was skeptical about this having any potential. Now, its not looking too bad, but I'm still concerned they'll fuck it up.

I have a hard time being optimistic about this. CG and stuntmen can make up for Ford's age, but I'm more worried about the producers. As long as Spielburg is the one directing, and they don't let Lucas fuck around with it too much, it might turn out okay. But then again, guns into walkie-talkies. I'm going to have to hear it from other people that the script is good, because I'm not taking George Lucas' word for it.

yeah, this should be interesting. seeing a geriatric adventurer try to swing on a vine while holding his metamucil. right now the only upcoming quartet makier that looks any way half decent I think is the new Die Hard

If it is true that this movie takes places 20 years after Last Crusade during the Cold War it makes more sense. I hope that they include how Indy got the eyepatch.

About damn time the script was finished. They've been working on it what, a few years now? I'm sure that he'll be in search of another Religeous artifact. I think there was rumblings of it being about Atlantis at one point, but I could be thinking of one of the Indy games.

One thing's for sure, it'd be interesting. Hopefully it'll be a movie to warrant me to go back to the theatre and watch something again.

A movie version of Fate of Atlantis would have been pretty sweet, actually. Right now I think the story is completely different though.

You're talking about a writer that did The Lost World, Spider-Man and Panic Room. All very wishy-washy affairs - even Jurassic Park was pretty half-assed in retrospect.

The gentleman who did the camerawork for the previous Indy movies - Slocombe - retired after 1989's Last Crusade. Now we're going to get this hack Kaminski - with his washed out, soft-lighting, handheld bullshit. Indiana Jones should not look like Minority Report or Saving Private Ryan.

Everything about this reeks of bad news.

Sounds good, they spent their time making sure the script is good so I expect they will do a good job.

Well, John Williams has done like every Spielberg film so far and he's listed on imdb as composer, so I'd guess him.

I just hope this movie is done right, Indy is my all time hero.

I really can't wait for the the first trailers to be released. I am sure they will come out sometime in the Fall/Winter of 07?

He stated as much pretty clearly during the Rose Parade as he was cruising about obviously annoyed by any questions that detracted from him waving at the people admiring his too cool Imperial Guard marching band.

My thoughts exactly. I have hope since Spielberg is directing, but anything can happen with George Lucas these days. The current Lucas is light-years away from his 1981-counterpart. I have horrible visions of this being filmed entirely in front of green scenes, or a hidden cameo from Jar Jar Binks... *shudder*

On the flip side... even though The Last Crusade had such a perfect ending to the series, I will be delighted if this new one turns out to be really good. I'm looking forward to a new John Williams score, at least.

Even though Firewall was a bog-standard movie, it proved that Harrison Ford is still capable of doing some rather physical stuntwork.
If he's got the passion for it, then I'm sure he'll be willing to put in more effort into it, so I wouldn't count him out because of his age JUST yet.

As long as the spirit of the old movies is still there, I'll be happy.
It just needs something else to become a true classic like the originals.

If Stalone still has it, why not Harrison Ford???

Rerecording is possible - but filmscore fans generally detest such things.

And theres a very good chance there will never be a CD release for Temple Of Doom in the USA due to licensing.

In the trilogy, the action is taking place in the 30/35's. If the character is 25/30 year older then the action will take place in around the 50/60's, it's not the adventurers time anymore, and the context of the story will be different as well (WWII & nazis). I really wonder what will happen with this "Ford's age" issue.
