How about some Dreamcast love?

Hello guys,

I still love my DC, with all of the homebrew games, imports, and simply amazing titles that I can't play elsewhere. There are a couple of new games coming out for the DC real soon in Japan, and the system is 7 years old (and supposedly "dead" for almost 5 years!)

The new games that are coming out for the DC:

Last Hope is coming on 01/2007

Trigger Heart Exelica

Also, there has recently been a commercially released home-brew game for the console:

Feet Of Fury

Is anyone else still enjoying their DC, be it for commercial games (arcade-perfect MvC2!), homebrew (QuakeDC looks like fun), imports, or what-have-you? Heck, there's a free dev kit available for the system, if you're good at programming.

Also, if anyone can help me boot a legitimate (not a CD image) Import DC game it would be greatly appreciated. I bought a copy of Giant Gram: All Japan Pro Wrestling 2, and I can't get it to boot using the Utopia boot CD or a Gameshark CDX. What methods do you use to run your legit imports?

Golfdish from Hell Dec 25, 2006 11:23 PM

I have a mod-chip installed in mine and I can play any legit import I feed it. I'm surprised the boot disc doesn't work on real imports. Mine's still going with no problems and I got it chipped over 6 years ago...

DC was a fine system that fell victim to having been made by Sega. I don't play fighters as much as I used to, but I still have mine nearby when the need arises for some real MvC 1 and 2 and Project Justice. Also, the emulators work surprisingly well for it...The Atari 2600 one (StellaDC I think) is great (since I can't get it to work on my computer).

still play mines mostly snk/capcom fighters as they rock on dreamcast

maybe a quick asskicking on shemue heh.

Errr..... yes, obviously. Like there anything else to play these days? Next thing you'll tell me people have long ditched the DC over newer systems? Yeah right.

Now for real, DC is the only 'modern system' that I play, I have an Xbox but it's used mostly for emulation purposes.

I think a lot of games hit their prime with this console--take Sonic Adventure 2 (mainly), just about every fighter out there (CvS/2, MvC/2). As all of them went to shit, quality and graphics-wise when they moved onto the ps2/xbox/gcn generation. =/ There's been no Sonic game like Sonic Adventure 2 even REMOTELY close to it in the past half decade--that being Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and even the next-gen Sonic failed...miserably.

It's a shame the Dreamcast died when it did. It was our preferred multiplayer console with all the cool fighting games and Power Stone 2. Heck, we even played the crap out of Sonic Shuffle even though it wasn't as good as it could've been. We can't really play it anymore since we lack VMUs and controllers since they were either lost or sold. (mine are in storage somewhere)

And yeah, once the Dreamcast died Sonic Team died with it. Only a few more quality titles on the gamecube were produced before they dropped their whole testing department and started producing straight crap.

Will I be able to play my import without a modchip? I have a launch model (09/1999) Dreamcast, and it plays every burned CD I put in it. I've only had to use my boot CD on a couple of early Echelon games, but it's kind of a shame that I can't play the game that I payed for. I'm going to try the Action Replay demo next (it also acts as a boot disc). After that I'm out of ideas short of buying a Jap DC...

The DC was a great system for its time, but ended up getting crushed by Sony when the PS2 was announced. Thankfully there's still enough support for the system that smaller companies in Japan are still making games for it (mostly 2-D shooters, but FUN 2-D shooters!). You should give Radilgy/Radirgy a try if you have the chance.

I also like that I can use my system as an emulator, a VCD player, an MP3 player, a Linux box, etc...

Golfdish from Hell Dec 26, 2006 08:26 PM

I seriously don't know...Mine's a launch unit too and with the chip installed, it boots my imports with no problem. I can't go in and take the chip out to test it...I was totally unaware the boot disc didn't work on real imports. The emulators I have are all self-booting (yay for Nero images!), so I never tinkered with a boot disc extensively.

Sorry.

Yes, it's been a while since I busted out my old DC.
But I still manage to pwn people in MvC 2 though.
Something about that controller just brings me back.
I still have my system and all it's games and VMUs . Now that I read this thread I think that I want to go back and start playing Code Veronica, Grandia 2, and Power Stone again.
Wow, now that I think about it too, I still hope that I have Tech Romancer as well.
Nice nostalgiac feelings.

:revival:

My DC is a launch unit and I have no problems at all. I'm actually avidly trying to find accessories and games to buy to make my collection bigger. Found some old accessories in Gamestop the other day, some controllers and rumble packs. None of the controllers worked, including one of my first-party ones that I already had. Opened those shits up and they work as good as new now. Still looking for two more first-party controllers and VMUs though (white) and I'd like some covers for my existing VMUs.

DC remains to be my favorite console ever. I have a PS3 and Wii and I still play my Dreamcast regularly because it's just that great.

Aardark Jan 21, 2007 07:03 PM

I bought a Dreamcast after it was already dead, and for an absurd price too, but I guess it was worth it. There weren't that many games to play, since I'm totally not interested in arcade ports and 2D fighters/scrolling shooters, but the few awesome games like Floigan Bros., Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure (the first one), Metropolis Street Racer and Shenmue were so good. Especially Shenmue. I started replaying Shenmue II today, and it still looks great, after more than five years. Man, if Yu Suzuki never makes a real sequel... :smith:

Dojomaster Jan 22, 2007 04:40 PM

Yeah...Shenmue 3 would be nice. Maybe we can get Sega to produce that and Nights 2 and put them out on a 2-disc double pack (yeah right ;) )

Can anyone recommend a good Playstation > DC controller adapter, and a good place to buy it now that Lik-Sang is gone? I'd like to use a joystick on MvC2 and a dance pad on DDR 2nd Mix!

The dreamcast is the newest system I own. Partially because of the fact that if i want to play another system, 9 out of every 10 houses probably has one, partially because of emulation, and partially because of the fact that we got ours at the end of its life for 50 bucks. (actually, one lived in our house before we got at launch, but it wasn't really ours... and was taken away) I'm just sad I saw those dreamcast arcade sticks on closeout during the short period when we didn't have a dreamcast (and when i didn't have any money, otherwise at the price they were ditching the things at, i would've bought all 3 of em).

Dojomaster Jan 24, 2007 10:53 PM

Yeah...I remember getting controllers for $.25 (!) and official VMUs for $1.25 (new!!!) when Toys R Us cleared out their DC inventory.

About a year ago a new copy of Crazy Taxi 2 showed up at the local Toys R Us. I asked the manager about it, and he said that since it wasn't on the system anymore, that I could get it for .01. That was a good day :)

Gixah Feb 3, 2007 12:39 PM

Do GameStop and EBGames still carry DC games? Well, wait, I have to go there anyway!

I should take my DC out of its box in my closet. It's such a beautifully designed system, IMHO.

Shiny McShine Feb 3, 2007 06:07 PM

I never owned a Dreamcast myself, but I basically lived with my friend at that time who did own one, so I'd play it all the time. I remember Sonic Adventure (never should have changed the formula), Shenmue II (which I own for Xbox because it's radass), House of the Dead, Power Stone, cool games like that.

It's disappointing because I consider myself to be somewhat of a Sega fanboy. Unfortunately, I have to admit that had the system been released by another company(or if Sega themselves had just done it differently), it would have done a whole lot better.

But yes, I love the Dreamcast. ^_^

Much love for my DC.

Sega Ozisoft went bankrupt almost months after it's release so they offered a refund in the full amount. I took it, and years later bought another one for 1/10th the price of the original unit.

I still hook it up to my monitor and occasionally have a go at Under Defeat along with some lesser-official titles.

Haha really? That's pretty awesome. I've always wondered if Dreamcast might have made a slightly bigger tiny splash if it was handled by anyone other than Sega Ozisoft. Sales of it were released a few months back, it only sold around 20,000 units in Australia and New Zealand combined through its short, painful life. :tpg:

Elixir Feb 3, 2007 08:19 PM

Yeah I'm surprised because the majority of it's games have aged very well. Sonic Adventure's still good looking, Soul Calibur is incredible (well, I cheat with 480p), along with Jet Set, Crazy Taxi, etc.

Hype killed it down here. Everyone goes with the mainstream stuff down here. U GOT DAT GTA?

With so much love for the Dreamcast, I am truly surprised that it died. To me, it feels like Sega just plain gave up for no good reason, though logically I know otherwise... There's too much to go over here, but a few DC highlights for me:

Rayman 2: The Dreamcast is worth owning for Rayman 2 alone (DC version > PS2 version by a great deal, this is one of the few titles where the voice acting really affected me as far as pulling me in to the "atmosphere").

I can fire up Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and just play for an hour and be totally entertained, even though I've played it for hundreds of hours. The Nintendo Wii needs this type of gameplay - not totally frivilous like mini-games yet not time-involving either.

Quake III DC > Quake III PC: I totally loved the maps in the DC version and didn't think much of the PC version frankly because it was missing them.

Sonic Adventure 1: The scene where Sonic is being chased by the killer whale is definitely one of the more memorable images in all of gamingdom. This is the game that made me believe games could truly make the transition from 2d to 3d successfully and then some...
