ATLANTA -
James Brown, the legendary singer known as the "Godfather of Soul," has died, his agent said early Monday. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized Sunday at Emory Crawford Long Hospital with pneumonia and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, Copsidas said.

The agent said Brown's family was being notified of his death and that the cause was still uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," Copsidas said.

Exactly what I was thinking. NOt a good Christmas present.

As funny as it is, I think back to WCW, when The Cat danced with him at one of their PPV's.

Dullenplain Dec 25, 2006 03:14 AM

A terrible and rather sudden loss for sure.

Will probably do some personal memorializing later with some mp3 playing.

Wii60Chambers Dec 25, 2006 03:49 AM

Holy shit!!!

R.I.P. to a legend :(

Being from South Carolina, this will probably headline papers for the next week.

Its weird. Hes an icon. We have a James Brown music festival every year for crying out loud. Its almost unbelievable that hes gone. Rest in peace.

SpaceOddity Dec 25, 2006 04:23 AM

Wow... How surreal. He's one of those guys that seemed like they'd go on forever.

Grawl Dec 25, 2006 05:05 AM

;_____________;

Poor James.

Roph Dec 25, 2006 05:29 AM

Without him, there'd be no funk, there'd be no hip hop, there'd be a lot less cool rhythm nowadays. RIP :(

Muzza Dec 25, 2006 05:41 AM

That's such a shame, and of all days to pass away on...

R.I.P. James Brown; your legacy will live on through your music.

Mucknuggle Dec 25, 2006 06:48 AM

RIP

This is going to be good for his biographies.

Now, we can finally break out the obvious song for this sad, sad event.

Elixir Dec 25, 2006 07:24 AM

RIP James Brown. "I feel good" was one of my mother's favorite songs. I didn't know him or his discography too well, but he'll surely be missed by millions of fans and dedicated listeners from his shining era. I can't imagine what his family is going through - for them to have someone die 1 am christmas day.

Hopefully people won't start wise cracks with the old L.A. Street song too so-

KCJ506 Dec 25, 2006 07:27 AM

Wow...this is just...wow.

RIP James. You made amazing music.

Chibi Neko Dec 25, 2006 07:41 AM

And I thought working on xmas morning was a bad way to start the day, this is awful! RIP soul man...

Helloween Dec 25, 2006 09:16 AM

Even with my limited exposure to the man.... dang.

A sad christmas present indeed.

Arainach Dec 25, 2006 09:45 AM

And just the other day he was yelling "I Feel Good!"

RIP.

Cirno Dec 25, 2006 11:42 AM

I feel bad that he died, but the guy did go kinda nuts. Wasn't he the one who beat up his wife a few times and got that ugly mugshut a few years back?

Balcony Heckler Dec 25, 2006 04:28 PM

well, despite what he did in life, god rest him, he brought us all a wonderful gift of music, and he'll be well remembered for it

Excrono Dec 25, 2006 09:02 PM

I woke finding the unpleasant news and was immediately saddened. The world has lost another great musical pioneer. RIP James.

JackTheRipper Dec 25, 2006 09:21 PM

What a shame. And to die on Christmas of

all days.

Dojomaster Dec 25, 2006 09:32 PM

R.I.P Mr Brown aka the original "Sex Machine."

The man may be dead, but his music will live on forever!

Drex Dec 25, 2006 10:12 PM

Oh man, that's sad. I saw the news post earlier where he was hospitalized, but I hadn't yet heard that he'd passed away. Rest in peace indeed. :(

Ryuu Dec 25, 2006 10:30 PM

;_;

My brother told me this morning, not a good way to start Christmas really.
