Standby mode
Last night I went to bed (wow!) and when I just now turned on the screen I encountered a screensaver. So far so good.
However, when I moved my mouse, I was greeted by the 'select your user' screen. I clicked on myself and then saw my wallpaper, and a second later my desktop. The thing is, I don't seem to have anything selected that could cause this. No standby-mode is enabled, energy savings is off etc. etc. What could cause this? I want to get rid of this, since I found out both Bitcomet and FlashFXP stopped doing their thing and none of the downloads got finished. |
The only thing I can think of is you accidentally restarted in Windows.
If you turn on the computer (or restart it) and don't do anything else, you'll get to the select a user screen, but if you don't do anything, it will go into a screen saver. Then when you wake you get the screen back. |
How would you then explain the fact my programs were still running?

Oh, I thought you said they weren't on.
You checked in Display->Screen Saver->Power...->Power Schemes to make sure System Standby is set to Never? |
This is just default behavior for Windows XP.
It will switch users, or if switch users is disabled, lock your session. You can turn it off by either using no screensaver and just have Windows turn off your display automatically, or if you want a screensaver, uncheck "On resume, display Welcome screen" next to where you set how long Windows takes to activate the screensaver. |
Alright thanks. Disabled that 'On resume, display welcome screen'. I'll check tonight if it works.

If you right click on the desktop and go into Display Properties, that setting is under Screensaver->Power.

The thing Merv suggested fixed the problem, thanks.
