An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Nashville after passengers reported the smell of sulphur from burning matches.

The matches were found on the seat of a woman who had attempted to conceal the odour of flatulence with the matches, Nashville airport authorities said.

All 99 passengers and five crew left the plane while it was searched.

The woman was questioned by the FBI but released without charge and allowed to board another American Airlines flight.

"It was determined that she was trying to conceal body odour," said Lynne Lowrance of the Nashville Airport Authority.

She had "no malicious intent but had struck matches which is against [Transport Security Administration] rules," Ms Lowrance said.

The unidentified woman had an unspecified medical condition, Associated Press news agency said.

She was carrying safety matches, which the TSA allows in carry-on luggage.

The matches are not allowed to be struck, however.
She doesn't want anyone to know that she has a farting problem.

So she lights safety matches.

On an airplane.

So could I get away with running around an airport covered in baby powder yelling "ANTHRAX!" as long as I explain that I have tourettes and a skin condition?

Hmmm, sometimes common sense does not prevail. Although, I really don't understand how you could hide the smell of yourself by lighting a match. If someone knows how, let me know.

I think this is one of those cases in which everybody onboard who had to be inconvienced by that woman's sheer stupidity should be allowed to each give the woman one free slap in the face without consequence.

I am intrigued to the point of wanting see any further developments for this story, just to know how in the world her ridiculous explanation of her actions holds any water.

You guys have never heard of anyone doing this before? I was on a fieldtrip and one of my friends who was rooming with me always lit matches after she used the bathroom. Yes she did claim that it was to get rid of the smell or conceal it. I don't quite remember if it did anything because I wasn't about to go in the bathroom and start sniffing right after someone takes a dump.

However, I'm not sure how smart it is to do something like that on a friggin' airplane, despite the lady not being the only person who is doing this.

Mythbusters did a bit on this. If I remember correctly matches didn't burn off the smell or make it go away. If it did anything all the match did was overpower the stench with its own smell for a few seconds.

Not a smart move on an airplane. Not a smart move at all.

Trying to decide which of these two articles is better, Dubble.

It's close, but I'm leaning towards the KFC Car-thief.

How embarrassing it must be to know that you cleared a whole airplane because of your farting.
