Vodka

Vodka. Preferred alcohol of Russians and many others around the world. Do you like it straight or mixed? What's your favorite mixed "girly" vodka drink? Is there a brand that you absolutely despise or love?

I'm partial to Grey Goose myself. There's just something about that French made vodka. It goes down smooth, taken straight or mixed and doesn't leave a terrible after taste. Sure, it's expensive, but it's soooo worth it.

Mix-wise I prefer lemon stuff - a nice lemon martini will do just fine. I've been dying to try a "lemon drop" but I can't find a consistent recipe for it. I've seen it listed as a shot and as a cocktail. Which is it?

Grey Goose is a godsend to drinkers since vodka, by nature, is pretty much like drinking rubbing alcohol. As for what I mix with my vodka? Lemon, grenadine and a spritz of Sprite or Coke. Makes for a damn good icebreaker. :D

Hpnotiq has always been something I gravitate towards at parties when they have it. Its not straight vodka, so it doesnt really need to be mixed (most vodkas dont anyway), and it has a smooth, distinctive taste.

Well I don't drink Vodka since last new year part =P When I didn't even see the fireworks cause we start the party to early and no one was able to look up in the sky anymore =D As for vodka it self I like to drink it with cola or other stuff like that. Mix of vodka, cola and ice is one of the best things you can have in hot summer afternoon =)

That sounds fantastic. I've always wanted to try mixing some vodka in with a slush/slurpee/whatever you call it where you're from.

Kazyl Dec 6, 2006 11:18 AM

Not really into mixed drinks in general, cept maybe a white Russian, but I absolutely love Grey Goose. Smoothest shit ever. I just shot it straight up.

I've heard those are good too. :tpg:

Smirnoff Vodka is one of my favorites, but I find Polar Ice quite refreshing straight. Its not as strong as Smirnoff straight so I can handle it a bit more. If I mix, then I usually have orange juice with it.

As for coolers, Smirnoff Ice with flavour twists are great and Mike's Hard Lemonade as well. I love anything that tastes like pop:D

Domino Dec 6, 2006 04:20 PM

Not really much of a vodka drinker but I tend to go for Smirnoff Ice myself, or the Iron Bru stuff when I do drink it. I don't like my vodka straight, I have to have my vodka with flavour otherwise I end up worse for wear. Any flavour with vodka will do, so long as it takes away the taste of the vodka itself.

quazi Dec 6, 2006 05:32 PM

Vladimir is a very good man.

Which is to say, the shittiest will get the job done, but shots of Grey Goose are certainly an improvement. Honestly, I'm not a big hard alcohol fan (except for whiskey) and mixed drinks don't do much for me either, sweets aren't my thing.

Erisu Kimu Dec 6, 2006 08:40 PM

I used to drink the Smirnoff orange twist vodka and cranberry twist vodka. I've never really had mixed vodka drinks, but the only 'mixed' non-vodka drink I used to enjoy was the Jack & Coke. I need to try more cocktails at buffets.

JackTheRipper Dec 6, 2006 10:08 PM

Yo mixed drinks is where it's at. I really mix any vodka (last time I drank it was Skyy) with any soda.. It was best with sprite, though.

Balcony Heckler Dec 6, 2006 10:32 PM

vodka martini with a lemon wedge, terrific

Dee Dec 6, 2006 11:58 PM

I never had much experience with different brands of vodka, but from what I do know is that cheap vodka is the worst cheap liquor I ever drank (even worse than cheap tequila), but decent vodka mixed with anything (well) will make for a good party bowl drink. I'm not really a fan of flavored liqours. I'm partial to Smirnoff, but now I want to try Grey Goose. Is it much more expensive?

YeOldeButchere Dec 7, 2006 10:25 PM

Vodka's never exactly been my favorite drink. I guess I'm more of a whisky guy. The fact that I drink everything straight probably has something to do with it.

Anyhow, it just happens that I've picked up a bottle of Smirnoff Vanilla Twist today while I was at the liquor store. So far it's drinkable, but hardly the best thing I've ever drank. It might be better colder. Then again I did not expect it to be that sweet, and I happen to dislike sweet liquors, so that doesn't really help. Maybe I'll get used to it, otherwise I suppose I'll eventually find some other use for it. Cooking, perhaps.

I should try some Grey Goose once. The problem is that the price tag will mean less bottles than usual that month.

gidget Dec 7, 2006 11:37 PM

I've had Vodka straight (I have no clue what kind, but I'm going to assume it was cheap) and it was pretty gross. I've also had it mixed with lemonade which was really good and I've had it mixed with orange juice and pineapple juice. That was my favorite combination.

It's not that much more expensive. A bottle is $40 here vs $32 or so for the Smirnoff - although it is a smaller volume. It's worth every penny though. Skyy on the other hand is one of the worst things I've ever had the pleasure to drink. That stuff is horrible straight. Just gross.

I just remembered that vodka + orange juice + cranberry juice = good thing.

Oh come on. It's like $8 more than Smirnoff. BTW - keep your vodka in the freezer, it's better that way.

Alice Dec 9, 2006 09:18 AM

You guys are right about Grey Goose being smooth as hell. The last time I truly got wasted it was on Grey Goose lemon drops. It was also the sickest hangover I've ever had. Since then I haven't been able to drink it.

Nowadays I like Stoli Vanilla with Coke. The Stoli strawberry and blueberry flavors are good, too. But you can't mix them with coke.

Mucknuggle Dec 9, 2006 11:03 AM

Alice, how do you do a proper lemon drop? I can't seem to find two matching recipes online.

Alice Dec 9, 2006 11:42 AM

The way I had them, you have straight Grey Goose in an 8-ball glass, some sugar on the side, and a lemon. What you do is, you sprinkle some sugar on the back of your hand between your thumb and index finger, lick it off, drink the shot and then bite down on the lemon.

The results are disastrous.

Meth Dec 9, 2006 12:46 PM

Vodka is Eurotrash. You all should do yourselves a favor and stick with whiskey. Good blended whiskey is smooth and flavorful, whereas most vodkas have a hard time with the smooth part, and they never taste good, especially those shitty Smirnoff flavored ones.

Do you guys actually go into a bar and order lemon drops and cosmos like a bunch of underage girls?

Me too! I'm all about the Vanilla Stoli's these days, usually with coke or pepsi. I also like vodka cran, and vodka 7 (as in 7-up or spirite), only thing I really don't like vodka with is anything really citrusy like orange juice... I had "a bad experience" with that back in the day.

Plarom Dec 10, 2006 01:32 PM

I decided earlier this year that Grey Goose is the only vodka I'll ever try and drink again. I prefer to drink liquor straight if the opportunity arises. A few months ago I was at a party and brought a bottle of Grey Goose. They had made two ice luges before I arrived and insisted I try it out. I had someone pour the bottle at the top while my freezing face was at the bottom and I didn't even feel the liquor hit my mouth because it was so cold! It was awesome. :D

As far as I know, the Goose is one of the world's best tasting vodka. Coincidentally, for the past two weekends three buddies and I have finished a liter of Grey Goose. They chose to mix their shots with Rockstar energy drink which ended up tasting very good. Here's a somewhat related quote from the Grey Goose wiki:

Spoiler:
Incidentally, [Sidney] Frank was behind the success of Jaegermeister before launching Grey Goose, and his current projects include "Crunk" energy drink, a joint venture with hip-hop entrepreneur Lil' Jon, and a premium tequila named Corazon.

I can testify that energy drinks and alcohol does equal CRUNK. Red bull and Hennessy was an essential part of my diet over this past summer. However, when I have more conventional mixed drinks, I usually start off with a cranberry and vodka. Pineapple juice and grenadine were two excellent suggestions I vouch for, as well! I'm partial to the Smirnoff Twists too because it really is like drinking flavored soda!

This was one of my first drinking experiments and the results were pretty intense! You can hardly taste the alcohol as it is, but since it's instantly chilled by the slush, your body goes into shock immediately after the first sip. Also, the slush melts with a much steadier rate, so it isn't long before your drinking an ultra sugary concoction that's making you wired and inebrieated at the same time. If you don't start having heart palpitations before you finish the cup you'll have a lot more fun while at the movie theatres! :tpg:

Interesting! I've heard of something very similar, only instead of sugar it's salt and instead of vodka it's tequila.

All those recipies sounds pretty damn good right about now posting in front of this computer. I've always like it with a couple of icecubes and a lemon wedge or two.

Where do you get those prices? I look online and Grey Goose costs about 2.5x more than Smirnoff. I compared 750 ml bottles, and I assume Grey Goose is 80 proof. :( Not good for students who like to mix liquor in big bowls and don't really care about taste as long as it's decent.
