The Office (US Version)

Yes, I'm aware of this thread. It's a compare and contrast thread.

I adore this show, first off. Both versions.

3x09:
Tonight's episode was HILARIOUS. It was written by the original writers of the English show, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. It definitely had a more English feel to the pacing and flow. I loved it, overall. I love how they are slowly whittling down the people who have transferred over from Stamford. It's quite funny to see all of them GET OUT WHILE THEY STILL CAN.

I love the awkward tension this season in the love triangle. It really highlights the fact that the main character of the show isn't Michael, but Jim (played by the wonderful John Krasinski).

What do you guys think, GFF? Got any theories? Any particular moments that made your side split?

Big of the UK version, downloaded a couple of the US ones, bit annoyed that they copied aload of the jokes but had its moments like the Basketball game, dont know what season that was over there.

That was the first season. The second season is where it really came into it's own, and the third is carrying that on. As a card-carrying* fan of the Brit version (being British it just comes naturally I guess) I do rather love the American version. I guess I prefer the Brit version overall, but the US version is almost as good, but in a slightly different way.

Anyways, yeah, loving the third season so far, though no got to watch E09 yet, I'll do that in a little bit. I'm looking forward to it though.

* not really.

Sorry to say, but I don't enjoy the US version as much as the UK version. I don't know what it is, but I am not very impressed by the US version.

Maybe its just not my type of comedy.

I will take a look at it again, maybe I will like it.

I loooooooooooooove The Office (US)!
The new Italian girl is kinda cute too. Jan is good looking too :)

I'm liking the US Office more and more as the show progresses. Given this, though, I still have to admit I like the original BBC version a bit more. As I had said in the other thread, the US version seems to be more "in your face" comedy, playing to an American audience. I don't say this with any pleasure, but it seems to be the case. On the original, the comedy seemed much more... "real". I could definitely see some of the situations arising that were played out on the show. The jokes and comedic situations felt a good deal more subtle, and that only added to the hilarity of the situation. And no one, no one, can live up to David Brent. Not even Michael Scott. :)

I've never seen the British version so I can't compare. The Office is the only (non-anime) TV show I have ever seen all of the episodes of (as of last night's episode). I don't know why I like it. My friend showed me the first season and I downloaded the rest. When there's too much Michael I don't like it. It needs the Jim-Pam-otheroneness to make it more complete. It does a good job of creating tension: feeling sorry for Michael, the odd interactions between the three. But, I feel less interested in it now that I have to wait a week for each episode--I preferred it when I watched all of season 2 and the first 5 epsides of 3. I wonder if I should watch the British show.

I adore the UK version as well. I have it on DVD and watched it when it was on BBC America a couple years ago. Honestly, they're different shows. It's really a bit silly to compare them.

For someone just starting to get into this show, I would recommend watching Season 2 first. Season 1 isn't really all that good (mostly because all the jokes are ripped from the UK version). Season 2 is where the show begins to come into its own, as Capo said, and develop a real personality and flow.

Sometimes, Michael's antics are so painfully self destructive I almost can't watch.

Season 3:
At the Diwali party, I could tell he was going to propse to Jan, and the build up of him doing it was so funny, I nearly died.

This show is really the definition of ironic comedy. We all know Michael's schemes and machinations are horrible and will eventually completely fall apart and result in disaster, but he doesn't. He thinks he's the greatest. And that's where the comedy is.

When are they planning to release Season 3 on DVD?

The Furious One Dec 6, 2006 02:02 PM

Just started season 3 now, season 2 was great, last few episode were too funny. I'm glad they sorted it out, season 1 was poor. Can't wait to see the rest of season 3. I hope it last longer than 3 seasons, really disappointed Jervais decided to stop there, it still had atleast one more season in it.

One thing that the US version does better than the UK, is how Michael can actually do his job to Jans amazment. But in the UK he couldn't pull it off, it just wasn't believable to see him actually do something benifical to the firm lol.

Anyone have a favourite episode/moment??

gaming Dec 6, 2006 03:47 PM

What?
Are they going to stop this show after Season 4...? :(

I've been trying to get my mom to watch this show for a long time now because I know she'll like it, but she says Michael reminds her way too much of some of her coworkers to be able to enjoy the show.

She had the same problem with Tobias in Arrested Development, but thankfully I got her to watch the DVDs and it's now one of her favorite shows.

Plarom Dec 6, 2006 05:34 PM

I was in tears from last week's episode! I have yet to even sit down and watch an entire episode, but last week with 'Mark' had to be the funniest thing I've ever witnessed on television. What made it so funny for me was the fact that I AM Mark. :tpg:

I was told by a coworker that it was a repeat, but he still swears by this show on a daily basis. He's currently waiting for his Dwight bobblehead to arrive! I've always had high hopes for this show since its conception and I've considered Steve Correll to be one of the funniest people on the planet for a long, long time.

Yeh UK Office lasted 2 seasons but they did a bunch of specials which were brilliant.

Lol I can't imagine someone actually being like Tobias, he is my favourite character of the show. Incase you havent heard Zach Braff is a huge fan of Tobias and wants to cast him in an episode of the last series of scrubs.
