Annoying Forum Trends...
 

I'm not talking about this specific forum, of course, but general forum behavior.

Yes, there are many annoying things people do, not necessarily what they say, just strange actions they take, for example...

If you have to say that then obviously you didn't think too hard about where your thread should be. Usually a mod wont go ape-shit and just close the thread and ban you either. It's pretty simple just to not say it and have it moved to the appropriate forum in case you are in the wrong place. Plus starting off like this seriously kills the thread in my opinion.

Also, of course, there is the signing of posts. I wont get into this since I've ranted about it for-ever, but this is equally as annoying. Seriously, we all know who posted the message we're reading =/

Your Opinions and other examples go below this line, also we all hate bad grammar, so there's not much discussion there.

I have been very few forums where the moderators don't go on stupid power trips.

I'll have to agree with you on the signing of threads trend. I really don't see the point of it myself, I mean we already know who posted, we don't need telling again.

I hate people who go through the work to register on a forum and just bump a topic over and over that doesn't need it.. Sometimes you see a new topic that was created in the middle of the night, and already has 6 posts. Then you see all the posts are, "bump", "bump", "bumpo", "come on why doesn't anyone help me", "ARG bump", "fine then you all suck anyways". I don't understand why people go through all that work when just act like an asshole in the end and give up before anyone reads their post.

Also, I especially hate the two acronyms posted above. Those two seem to have become acceptable on most forums lately, even ones that hate internet acronyms. I'm not sure why.

Another thing that gets me lolling at the internet is when e-drama occurs, and one person responds to another with, "You misspelled __________, therefore your argument is invalid." Or even better, "you mispelled ________, learn to type and than maybe you can prove your point."

Oh gawd... having moderated various forums before... Something that annoys me a lot is when someone breaks the rules and then someone who's NOT a moderator makes a big deal and yells at them about it... and then it just escalates into some petty, elementary school "You're not my mother!" type fight.

Also, having to deal with members who think they can be sarcastic assholes to everyone, and it's okay because they're just being SARCASTIC and IT'S ONLY THE INTARWEB! Fine. Whatever. Please go fail at sarcasism somewhere else. Thanks.

I also am quite tired of "O RLY".

The signing posts things also gets a brow raising from me.

I really dislike it on GFF when people make a post like:

That kind of rubbish capslock sarcasm is really popular. You're just saying the exact, blunt opposite of what you really mean - why do you think that's clever?

Whenever I see this kind of thing I always hear Homer Simpsons voice in my head going "Now I will hug and kiss some poisonous snakes. Now THAT's sarcasm".

I hate it when a forum is filled with people who inadvertently start trends, then when they realise everyone's following the same thing they abandon whatever it is they started in the first place and scold all the people following a trendy bandwagon etc etc etc. It's hard to put into words, but it's just fucking frustrating when shit reaches that level of elitism.

Also I dislike when total nubs think they've been around since the dawn of the internet and know all the odds and ends of the community they're striving to belong to. Admittedly I haven't been around on GFF long compared to most of you (so I won't pretend that I have been), but it's one of the main reasons I just left a forum I'd been a part of for over three years.

I'm not a big fan of the repeating quotes over and over in a bigger font size thing. I also have very little time for "I know you are but what am I" type fights. If you're gonna abuse each other, at least use a little imagination.

One i really hate is people who throw IMO after something they write as some kind of disclaimer. We know it's your fucking opinion mate, you don't need to inform us of this.

Another I hate is people who quote THE VERY PREVIOUS POST as if we didn't realise they were talking to the previous poster if they didn't. It's like they think reader's minds just delete from memory a post the moment they hit the scrollbar. Hey faggots, stop making me scroll more, just reply to the previous person!
This is most annoying when they are the first reply in the thread.

Hmm, let's see...

• People who cannot communicate their point of view in a coherent or inoffensive way and then resort to phrases like "you don't tolerate my opinion!" when everyone keeps telling them that they're full of shit.
• Forum staff that is lenient on trolls. I've seen whole communities go down this way: Some guys flame-bait and insult other members on a regular basis and the mods remain reluctant to even issue a warning and never resort to a healthy old-fashioned ban. I don't mind some discussions becoming more heated and rougher than others but if there's really no corner left on a forum where basic manners prevail, I'll set sails for more civilized shores sooner or later.
• Browsing the GFF without being logged in, because of those damn, bloated banners in everyone's signature. I'm glad there's an option for this in the User CP. ;)

And while I have to agree that people who are overly anal about spelling are annoying, I think a complete lack of some of those basic qualities (spelling, grammar, punctuation...) can be even more unnerving.

My biggest pet peeve is people who can't find the search button. They drive me insane. Enough said.

Coming in a very close second are the people whose grammar is abominable (I'm talking the people who can't find their Shift key, and more often than not don't know what punctuation is) and who get all "holier-than-thou" when you call them out on it. Seriously, when a majority of the forum can't read your posts, YOU are the problem, not their "taking this too seriously".

Also, people who post in a thread but have absolutely no opinion or anything of value to add. As in "I don't really know what to say." Well don't say anything; it's not as if your postcount equates to your IQ, Jesus Christ :mad: I've seen threads with about 20 posts like this and you just wonder what in hell they were hoping to achieve by it.

So luckily I 'm not the only one who hates these sorts of things.

1) Signing after the posts. Aagh! I don't care to know your real name and it takes less than a second to glance up and left a bit to see your username. No need for "Cheers!" or "Have a good one" either. It's rather bothersome, even if it's an old habit for some people. Posts aren't emails.

2) People who take every quote in an e-argument and try to counter it:
eg. "X game is a copycat of Y.
"Oh really? X game was made before Y ever existed. Get your facts straight."
"It's not so much A, but way too much B"
"You're way too much B, as you obviously fail to understand C and D..."

3) "Lurn how to spell, retardd"

I've noticed people do this if they have a lot to say, and are afraid someone else will post while they are typing, resulting in, "Was that to me or the other guy?"

And, why put IMO anywhere? I was always taught whatever you say or write IS your opinion, so you don't have to tell anyone....Just back it up with examples.

Now see, I addressed both points in RABicle's post without resorting to breaking it apart. That's the one trend I really can't get behind. You can argue with someone by addressing the post in the reverse order--as I did. Posts don't need to be picked apart like that.
