The split, according to court documents filed in the US, has the star citing "irreconcilable differences."

The papers were filed yesterday - just a day after a judge dismissed a libel suit brought by Spears accusing US Weekly magazine of fabricating a story about a sexually explicit video the pop star and her husband made together.

In her divorce petition, Spears asks for both legal and physical custody of the couple's two children, one-year old Sean Preston and two-month old Jayden James, with Federline - who calls himself K-Fed - getting reasonable visitation rights.

On the financial side, the couple, who married in September 2004, have a prenuptial agreement. Sources say Spears is waiving her right to spousal support and is also asking the judge to make each party pay their own attorney's fees.

The couple have been battling widely-reported problems, with magazines repeatedly showing Federline out partying with beauties - who seem eager to hang on his reflected fame despite his rap career being spectacularly unsuccessful.

In the divorce papers from Los Angeles County Superior Court and cited by US gossip site TMZ, Spears gives the date of separation as yesterday - the same day she flaunted her incredible revamped physique during a surprise appearance on David Letterman's show.

Sources said there was no single reason for Britney pulling the plug, rather, it was "a string of events."

Spears has hired powerhouse celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has represented a number of celebs, including Angelina Jolie, Nick Lachey and Kiefer Sutherland.

It has been rumoured Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe asked Wasser to represent both of them in their split, but Wasser declined for personal reasons.
