Remembrance Day

Quote:

In Flanders's Fields
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
I couldn't find a Remembrance Day thread anywhere else, so I took the initiative and posted one. Out of all of the holidays we have, I think November 11th is the most meaningful to myself. Hundreds of thousands of brave men and women have given their lives to fight for what our country believes in, paid the ultimate sacrifice for people they don't even know - lest we forget them.

So I ask humbly, that at 11AM on November 11th, please take a minute of silence in honor and respect, and remember those who gave their lives.

Lest We Forget.

As much as I would want to show my respect ... Wouldn't this be more reasonable on the day of, rather than five days before?

Acro-nym Nov 6, 2006 11:45 AM

Interesting. Is Remembrance Day strictly for those who have died?

Phoque le PQ Nov 6, 2006 12:02 PM

remembrance day... another proof of quebec's total lack of recognition for REAL freedom fighters. This day is barely celebrated here; we don't even get a day off.

Majin yami Nov 6, 2006 01:17 PM

We don't get a day off over here either. We do have a one minutes silence at 11:11am on November 11th and that's about it. Also, a lot of people wear poppies to show their respect (wearing one as I type).

In the US it's known as Veterans' Day. I'd like to add the following:

It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

remembrance day is big in newfoundland, everything is closed and there are ceramonies everywhere.

I still haven't obtained a poppy yet, however I haven't looked for them either, they are everywhere though, I do have to make a point of getting one this week.

It's a fairly standard memorial type day here, although most stores that do open on Nov. 11, will only be open after noon. But it's a day off from school and work for most people. Assuming I'm not sleeping at 11am, there will be a moment of silence. If I am sleeping.....well I shouldn't be.

I have to say though, I'm saddened at the lack of respect given to the day, in that there still are stores that will open, etc etc. Maybe one day it will again be a true day of respect for those that fell in battle. Until then, do what we can to remember them.

Yeah, I find that Remembrance Day is very important to me and my family. My Grandfather was in WWI and was in the British Navy during that time. He was on a bunch of ships, one being the H.M.S. Hood in 1916 and 1917. He was discharged in 1929. He lived a long life (95 years), but its hard to imagine what he went through during the war. Kinda nerve-racking I think.

ArrowHead Nov 7, 2006 11:49 AM

My grandfather served as a field mechanic in WWII and I have friends who have served. Also, one of my workmates is in the reserves and will soon be taking the exam for a promotion to Sergeant.

Got a poppy, now I just need to get off my ass and get a safety pin so it doesn't fall off for the twelfth time.

That was a really nice quote. Hadn't heard it before.

ArrowHead Nov 7, 2006 12:47 PM

This is the first time I've seen it posted anywhere with respect.

(Usually it's some conservative shill going on about how Might Makes Right.)

Majin yami Nov 7, 2006 01:28 PM

I'vre lost my (third) poppy today. Time to get another one. They just do not stay on!

ArrowHead Nov 8, 2006 11:45 PM

Try replacing the pin with a safety pin.

I should try that, my poppy falls off just about every day!

Locke Nov 9, 2006 03:17 PM

I bend the pin almost 90° and it usually stays in unless i'm putting on and taking off the inside liner :S

Here is a quick diagram for keeping a poppy on with out a safety pin. just push the 'needle' though the jacket/shirt then down thorugh the bottom of the poppy them back into the jacket/shirt

Here's a video some of you guys may like :).

If I could get this version of O Canada in mp3 I'd be very grateful as well.

Lest we forget.

Locke Nov 11, 2006 09:58 AM

Today is the day - November 11th, the anniversary of the armistace that ended WWI.

Please, when the clock hits 1100, take a minute or two of silence for honour and respect of our soldiers.

Double Post:
LEST WE FORGET
