If you have arachnophobia, then move along. Nothing for you here.

OK now that the fair warning's been given, time to get to it:

Apparently, in some farm, "tens of millions" of spiders got trapped and spawened a 60-acre spider web! If you look at the pics, you'll see that some areas have been woven over and over so densly that it almost looks like solid quilts or snow!

Crazy pics

I wonder what conditions allow or trigger for something like this to take place.

Spiders creep me out, and I detest the feeling of spiderwebbing, but that's really rather awesome, especially coming from such small spiders! Perfect timing for the season too!

cento Oct 29, 2006 12:22 PM

I'm not a fan of spiders either... but those pics are cool. The thought of millions of spiders crawling around freaks me out though.

Chibi Neko Oct 29, 2006 12:37 PM

Whoa! now that is awesome!

It's the hostile take over of the world by bugs!http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/...607170317/1009

Arg :S You know, I don't like too much spiders but those pics make me almost puke. Spiders are pretty and nice when you see them on tv, but man, if I got in the middle of that trap I'd be totally astonished.

Edit: Oh my, using black widows for grapes-cleaning XD I love this intelligence.

Perhaps global warming is finally having an effect on nature?

That is pretty cool however. Very beautiful. Nature is quite amazing.

they look like a zombies, I think that's 20x scarier than spiders.

TheXeno Oct 29, 2006 03:23 PM

Ah the mysteries of nature. There are still millions of things we don't know about her, especially stuff like this.

*AkirA* Oct 29, 2006 03:38 PM

The catepillars half way down the page are scary then the spiders (does nervous shirt brush off).

The Wise Vivi Oct 29, 2006 03:47 PM

Sweet! I LOVE spiders! And that is pretty awesome to see. Those webs are cool!

Wish I had been there in real life.

wvlfpvp Oct 29, 2006 04:20 PM

Fucking neat. Although this line in the long thing about tarantulas bothered me:

The particular species of wasp that feeds on the goliath is the size of a sparrow.

I hate spiders, and they creep me out. The pictures were cool, but thinking that they could happen anywhere creeps the fuck out of me.

Ugh...

J-Man Oct 29, 2006 05:56 PM

I don't think I'd have the nerve to chase massive spiders around the world like the dude at the end there. I'll wait 'till they come for me.

Heh, got there before me; especially that guy on the right.

I hate spiders with a passion but that is pretty fucking awesome. It's like snow but about a million times creepier.

Shenlon Oct 29, 2006 06:27 PM

They were stepping right into the spider web, I would have been a good 10 feet away from it.
I hate spiders, the web alone freaks me out so I can't imagine waking up and stepping into a whole nest of spiders for a big morning surprise ><

Gecko3 Oct 29, 2006 07:47 PM

Seeing stuff like this makes me glad it's starting to get cold again where I live lol.

Zip Oct 29, 2006 08:20 PM

shittt, that web thing was cool then i scrolled down and there was this huge spider, freaked me out.

Mojougwe Oct 29, 2006 11:39 PM

I think what may cause such 'quiltwork' is dependant on the variety of spider that did it. Your basic household spiders probably produce a simple webbing that's probably skinnier than a single strand of your hair. But the webs displayed in that website's images are probably done by spiders who can produce thicker webbing.

And to have time for such work, the spider itself must have some lifespan. Supposedly lengthier than your average household spider. As well as durability vs cold temperatures and other weather conditons.

All theoretical of course. I don't know enough about spiders to confirm anything for sure. But it sure is something to think about if you're questioning the existance of such 'quiltwork'.

I was creeped out until I remembered that I hate bees, not spiders, and that this is the bee equivalent of Auschwitz. Awesome.

You're right, they do. Especially the one on the right.

*Shudders.*

The webs are quite awesome, though the silk worms (or catepillars) wasn't as cool (quite the opposite actually - like ugh).

That is really creepy. Cool, in a way, but very, very creepy. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. I'd just keep picturing the spiders floating on the wind and getting onto my face. AH!
