[SOLVED] Journal/board feature request: The ability to embed Youtube Videos

Is this possible? It would be sooooo rad if we could do this.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Oct 28, 2006 10:20 AM

That would also give us the ability to embed HTML, would it not? I could definitely see problems coming from that. And remember the testing thread fiasco?

Little Shithead Oct 28, 2006 10:43 AM

No, you can create custom vBCode.

Create a code that allows you to embed things from youtube (embeding just flash in general could be a bad idea, but that could work, too.)

As long as the movies didn't start playing or downloading as soon as I entered a page, it would be cool. A limit on the number of videos would be good (like 3).

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Oct 28, 2006 12:27 PM

Or one.

Bigblah Oct 28, 2006 12:37 PM

CHz has demonstrated that the HTML/scripting exploit still works on vB 3.5 with any custom vBcode that allows user input in tag parameters.

I'm not risking it (until we finally upgrade to 3.6.2, maybe).

galen Oct 28, 2006 12:51 PM

Ah okay. Once we can and if we do it, I agree that there should be some kind of limits should be in place to prevent people posting 1000 videos in one post. Also, I think the ability for each user to turn video embeds off in the CP would be a good idea.

It might also be of benefit to enable the feature in only some forums. The Sewers, Testing, General, and maybe the gaming forums, but there would be no use outside of trying to start shit if youtubes were posted in the likes of PP or Board Support here, for example.

This is, of course, if it ever gets done.

Xardion Oct 28, 2006 01:48 PM

What's wrong with just linking to youtube?

Ok, so that's three years at the minimum we could possibly see this being done.

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 28, 2006 05:12 PM

Sorry about the h4x0rz. I'm why we can't have good things. :(

The usual embedded player doesn't actually start loading the movie until you hit the giant ▶ in the middle, so the only additional page-loading overhead would be the loading of the player and the starting of the Flash runtime.

I don't mind whether we have [youtube] or not, since it takes one click to start the movie and one click on a YouTube link to pop open another window. Extra windows are fine with me, especially since sometimes there's good stuff in the video comments.

That would be a nice touch. I think it would be cool if, if a user has embedded videos turned off, a tag would turn into just flat URL to the video instead of just not displaying anything so that the person could still view the video by clicking the link.

Yeah, probably. Especially considering the last time bobo even browsed the forums was October 2nd and the last time he posted was August 23rd. He's been too busy with work and sleeping after awesome weekends to upgrade VB like he said he would months ago.

And the really sad thing is, nobody is even the least bit surprised anymore.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 30, 2006 03:16 PM

Don't worry though, next time the boards are in a financial crisis, bobo will show up, promise new shit, and people will still believe him! Because those people are smart. And then he'll show up to shit on Blah and his great ideas again.

Perhaps I"m giving him too much shit though, he might do a little bit of work for about half a week before disappearing again.

Lord Styphon Oct 30, 2006 04:20 PM

In a related story, I had to laugh at the amazing relevance of the wiki page OO made for IoriYagami n8.

Wall Feces Dec 26, 2006 12:28 PM

Reviving this thread since bobo and the funky bunch are upgrading the board. Now that the upgrade is happening, would this become a possibility? I'm thinking ONLY for journals, but I wouldn't object to forum-wide youtube usage.

Miles Dec 26, 2006 12:32 PM

Youtube usage would be awesome. I can link super kawaii videos all over the place. ^_^

Drex Dec 26, 2006 12:33 PM

If you check out Blah's latest journal entry, you'll see that he's working on embedding an mp3 player. Video might be possible, but it looks like he's already working on whatever is going to go in.

Wall Feces Dec 26, 2006 12:40 PM

Yeah I saw that, which prompted me to search for this thread before making my own. Dats right, I read the rules :D

YouTube would seriously be great though. So many times have I wanted to post videos right into my journal... Perhaps my dream will be a reality soon!

Bigblah Dec 26, 2006 12:52 PM

YouTube / Google videos are already possible, but I'd prefer to wait until we upgrade vBulletin to 3.6.4 since there's already a plugin available for that, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Miles Dec 26, 2006 01:13 PM

I think I'm gonna go hack crazy after the release. Following instructions on pre-made hacks is about the only thing I can do in adding new features to the forums. :3

Drex Dec 26, 2006 02:56 PM

Better than me; I just added really simple html>>vBcode stuff. :P

We might want to think about whether we allow Google/YouTube embedding in the general forums, though. I like it in the journals, but I can forsee a huge fad of just posting someone else's video as a thread.

galen Dec 28, 2006 11:45 PM

I think it should be allowed in posts as well, and that's what I had in mind when I suggested it. If people spam videos all over... well, that's why we have moderators.

Also I think the option to turn off embedded videos in the CP is still a good idea and I also think mods should have the ability to revoke video posting abilities.

FatsDomino Dec 28, 2006 11:51 PM

Yeah, definitely. It might not be too bad to set a posting limit at least for the forums before allowing that though. Maybe 20 posts.

Miles Dec 30, 2006 02:00 AM

http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/co...tml#post353570

I installed the hack just now. Works fine in posts. Still needs to be fixed to work with chocojournal entries.
