IP Address and Port Number
Quick question. How do I find my IP address in Windows XP and a Port Number that I can give my friend for Direct Connect gaming purposes. I used to only have to type "winipcfg" in Start>Run, but that's not available in XP.

Try this to find out your IP address. I tried "IPCONFIG" but had no luck. (sorted it now)
This website works just as well at telling you your IP address. I think that you can assign any port number, so long as you set the firewall/ router to accept it. |
Command Prompt -> "ipconfig /all" will show you almost all of your network information (minus the quotes).

If you're behind a router of somekind, ipconfig /all is only going to show you your private IP address most like 192.168.1.x and wont help you out. You have to pull up a whoIS utility to get your public IP address.
Port numbers for the most part are randomly assigned between 1024-65535, but you can choose one for whatever app you're using so long as both sides of the connection are forwarding it past thier router. |
Hooray, worked fine. Thanks guys. =)
