Men and makeup

So what do you think?

There is a line of makeup for men on the market, from foundation to nail polish. Although I do not see any around, I think is it a nice idea! After all, if women want wear make up and look good, why not men too? Obviouslly we don't want to judge men and women on looks, but I do not see anything wrong with moisterizer, lip balm, a little blush there and a little eyeliner there.

Some men might think that wearing makeup or skin care products is down right gay, but why should it? After all some cosmetics is really good for your skin, and there is nothing gay about taking care of yourself. If men and women are striving to be more equal, why not men get into some of the stuff that used to be stricklly for women? It dosen't always have to be women getting into the traditional men stuff.

Wait, what?

If I'm against women wearing makeup, why would I want to myself, or have my guy friends wear it? Seriously, it just makes you look ugly most of the time, in my opinion.

There was a guy in my middle school who wore eyeliner. I fought him. (For a completely different reason, I might add.)

Yes, some cosmetics are good for you, such as your skin is very dry, moisterizer will help. I don't like make up either... as in the blush, foundation, eye-liner ect. but there are women who use it... don't you think men can wear some too if they want?

Musharraf Oct 21, 2006 10:29 AM

I see no problem with men and makeup as long as it doesn't look ugly. But last time I checked, makeup wasn't supposed to make someone look ugly (?)

This is pretty much my take on makeup. Often times, it simply doesn't work and it only makes people look worse*. The few times I've seen it done right, they might as well have not been wearing it at all, since they looked fine already.

*This applies moreso to guys. I honestly thought we couldn't possibly look any worse and then some take to caking stuff on their face.

Jochie Oct 21, 2006 12:04 PM

Sure, why not? Let's all start wearing enormous powdered wigs while we're at it. Gaudy is the new beautiful.

Actually, skin care junk seems cool. I have really oily skin, for example, so slapping some chemical on my face to help with that is a good thing. Makeup in general though... I don't know. It's only good when it's undetectable, I think. Otherwise people end up looking like clowns or whores, or like they're celebrating Halloween all year long.

Are guys the new girls?

Miles Oct 21, 2006 12:49 PM

Don't most male movie stars wear makeup during filming? It's like the only reason any guy should use makeup I guess, unless you have terrible acne and wanna hide it really badly.

I hate it when anyone uses makeup. I would call some girls in High School insecure because they would ruin their pretty faces each day through makeup overdosage.

RABicle Oct 21, 2006 12:51 PM

I have worn at one point or another
Foundation
Nail Polish
Lipstick
Eyeliner
Eyeshadow
Mascara
Blush

Nailpolish was the only one not worn for a theatrical performance and in fact worn by choice.

I have a couple friend's dads who are anchors on the local news, and they would always come to any sporting event (mainly a baseball game) we were playing with all of the pancake and everything on. Truthfully, they looked really ridiculous outside of the studio. No makeup for me, thanks.

RABicle Oct 21, 2006 12:54 PM

I'd say I looked a lot better with the foundation on.

niki Oct 21, 2006 12:54 PM

Nothing wrong with taking care of your skin, but wearing make-up is an entirely different thing.

Although a bit of make-up does make some women look better sometimes, I don't like it. And I think it looks plain silly on men.

RABicle Oct 21, 2006 12:57 PM

So I'm the only one here who thinks that done well, women look amazing with make-up on then?

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Oct 21, 2006 01:01 PM

Of course not. It's just, the majority of the time, it's not done well.

Summonmaster Oct 21, 2006 01:04 PM

When done well, women do look good with makeup, but when you notice it, then it usually looks ugly if overdone. I could really care less about how my own skin looks, however cracked or oily it might be but if a guy wants to "take care of his skin" there's no problem with that. Makeup to show off is different though.

I like and dislike makeup...

I like the fact that is can make you look good on certian situations, for example I have some horrible acne scars on my chin, I use conceiler and some foundation to cover it up until they heal, the rest of my face is untouched except for the clenser and acne treatment to keep it clean.

I dislike the fact that some people just cake the stuff on their face as a second layer, sure it is good if your are performing because of the lights, however you'd have to be very insecure to use it everyday as a second skin.

If my boyfirend had some acne scars and wanted to cover it up, I don't see why not... I would not care about the scars personally, but it is a different story when it is on your face, most people would like to cover it up until it goes away.

Why are men doing it? Naturally, it's difficult to escape marketing, and with the combination of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and the dreaded metrosexual phenomenon, it's evident the hard sell is on to get men to buy grooming products.
This is pretty much it. The industry's driving advertising hard and fast to get guys to buy their products. I'm sure there are other markets that traditionally market their wares to women who are now aiming and guys. The reverse is happening too.

Quoted for truth.

riggermortis Oct 21, 2006 01:29 PM

There's nothing wrong with it imo, I've actually considered wearing subtle eye liner because apparently it makes my eyes look really nice... as has been said there's nothing wrong with make-up as long as it's done right, if you can't notice it then it just looks like natural beauty =) which is the best kind o' course.

I use moisturiser and have done for as long as I remember, alot of my friends call this "gay", but, ah well, I'll look younger for longer :p

The Wise Vivi Oct 21, 2006 01:32 PM

I use lip balm for dry lips, and I use conditioner lotion to keep my face from getting dry. That is the extent in which I use anything for my face. Anything beyond that is..... impractical.

Why Am I Allowed to Have Gray Paint Oct 21, 2006 01:48 PM

I think that some particularly ugly guys with bad skin might actually benefit from wearing make-up. The trouble is, most men (and I suspect most women too) would call men who wore it effeminate. That's pretty much only a Western taboo; there are cultures all around the world where men wear makeup for various reasons (especially eye-liner) to make themselves more attractive to women or to participate in certain tribal rituals.

Void Oct 21, 2006 02:58 PM

There's a big difference between simple moisturizer and full-blown foundation and lipstick and all that jazz.

I like wearing eyeliner and all that stuff when it's liek Halloween or when I'm dressing up for some cooky party, but in general, it's much better to embrace your natural beauty. If you have acne, get rid of it rather than covering it up. I use moisturizer, of coruse, chaptstick, yeah, that shit's just obvious. But foundation? fuck that.

Women wearing make-up is fine. It's nice when it's subtle and slightly accentuates their features. I love women with eyeliner and eyeshadow and that stuff. But I wouldn't rely on it too much.

Nahual Oct 21, 2006 03:44 PM

The only time I think that guys should wear make up is if they are actors, or doing the goth thing. Or, if a dude want to be a girl for a day. Someone in highschool did it before. It was funny.

I wore makeup in a theatre performance I was in.

Alice Oct 21, 2006 04:02 PM

It cracks me up when guys say they like women who don't wear makeup. The trick with makeup is, if you look like you're wearing it, you're wearing too much. I can't tell you how many times someone has said to me, "You're pretty without makeup." Which is hilarious because very few people - namely the ones who have said that to me - have ever seen me without it.

As far as men and makeup goes, I'd probably be freaked out about it at first, but if everyone started doing it I'd get used to it. Eyeliner looks good on guys sometimes, and clear fingernail polish is no big deal anymore. Lots of guys I know use it, and it looks nice.
