Torchwood: The TV Show
Hey!
The first Doctor Who spin off since 1981 comes out near the end of the month and I am just curious who plans to watch it, whether downloaded, or on TV? I plan to watch it, mainly due to the fact I liked John Barrowman in Doctor Who Season One. I would also like to see just how different the show is going to be as compared to DW. The girl from Season One of DW in "The Unquiet Dead", is a partner with Barrowman in Torchwood. It will be interesting to see what Torchwood is really all about too. Hopefully it looks better than the season finale of DW.. ;) Anyway, what are your preview thoughts? The show premieres on BBC on October 22 (I do believe. Correct me if I am wrong) |
I'll be watching it downloaded, since there are no plans to show it in the US. So far it looks very promising, and it could fill that Doctor Who void until next spring. I'm not sure how many other fans you'll find on GFF, based on how the last Doctor Who thread went.

Are the episodes being split up between guest writers like they do with Doctor Who? The Doctor Who episodes written by Russell T Davis tend to be the poorest, so I hope so.
What I've increasingly found myself doing with Dr Who is waiting until an episode airs, monitoring the general consensus afterwards at another forum I frequent, and downloading only the ones given critical approval. I'll probably do the same with this. |
Davies is doing two episodes. Including the first one to air in 12 days.

So, did anyone else watch the premiere on Sunday? I thought the show was ok, although I hope it grows on me a bit more. Captain Jack as usual was the best part, and really the most enjoyable parts for me were the references back to Doctor Who (hinting at future plot developments?)
One thing's for sure: this won't be on American TV anytime soon. Between the graphic violence, the language, and the sex scene(s) in the 2nd episode, I can't see Sci-Fi taking a chance on this show. Maybe they'll surprise me, but I doubt it. |
Man, I thought the show was very good. At the very least, its a good start. And yes, I think there are many plot developments to explain how he got to the 21st century from the year 200,000. He will be in the third season of Doctor Who, so I am sure the explanation will come out next spring.
I hear it will be on CBC in Canada however. Too bad for the U.S. I think there is great potential in this show. My first impressions were very good. It can be difficult to catch audience with Sci-fi investigation. |
Don't get me wrong, I liked it, it's just not the best thing I'm watching right now. It'll fill the Doctor Who void at least. Part of my problem may be the volume on the versions I watched. They were off of BBC HD, and I had to crank the volume up loud to hear the voices, meanwhile the music, sound effects, etc were blasting. Part of it could be me trying to understand the welsh (?) accents.

I agree, it isn't the best thing out there, but hey, its a great attempt at something different, wouldn't you say?

I liked episode 1 very much. I thought episode 2 felt a bit too much like "hey! check this out! we can do sex-based plots!" but hopefully they've got that out of their system now and the rest of the series will be pretty high quality.

Well, like was said earlier, Russell T. Davies has some weak episodes. Since he wrote the second episode, I think he was trying to show how far he could go with it and show the audience just how different it really is.
