Installing New OS
 

If I install a new os will it erase all my files? (I'm trying out the new Windows Vista Beta). I'm a computer newbie! Please help! Thankyou!

The short answer: Yes

If you're a computer newbie I wouldn't recommend trying out the beta.

Nothing you can't live without that XP doesn't offer, just wait for the real version when software programs start supporting the OS.

If you're asking questions about installing a new OS, then I doubt you'll have any joy whatsoever with Vista. Wait.

I advice for you is to wait as well. If you really want to try it out, I don't know if Vista will let you partition your drive and dual boot your system.

Were it anything else (ie. a Linux distro), I would say be cautious but venture forth.
But with Vista, it's a whole new ballgame. A friend of mine has installed it on his HD and it caused him so many troubles, I would highly recommend that you stay away from it.

Well you could just bear with XP SP2 OEM. And no, you can decide whether your files will be ereased or not (OS Overwriting is not recommended but might prove useful).

I would also suggest not getting Vista until you buy a new computer (after the program has been released). At least that is what I am going to do come early next year. But then again, my computer is over four years old, and its time for an upgrade.

I wouldn't even consider using Vista until at least one service pack is out.

If you've downloaded the RC2, since it's what i use, you won't lose anything at all.

I mounted it with daemon tools and it installed fine. Made a backup of my old windows to boot.

You NEED at least 20 gigs of free space, depending on how big your current windows folder is. Vista requires at least 12 gigs.

Your license key is good for a year, but i'm only keeping mine installed for a month or two.

My only current problems is a bar in explorer i can't get rid of, a horrible start button(it's so bad[so bad]) and Sexy Beach 3 didn't work. If there are pics anyone wants, pm me and i'll post them here :)

Just make sure you read before you hit Next for the Setup. There is a step where u gotta select your hard disk Partition and what you gonna do with it. Install it to another Partition if you have 2 or more if you still wanna use your old windows. It will automatically install multiboot. Multiboot will let u select your Windows.
