As previously rumors Microsoft will release an Xbox Live Arcade version of id Software's classic first person shooter Doom via Xbox Live Arcade. The port will include both four player deathmatch and four player co-op mode online on Xbox Live, along with smooth textures, 5.1 surround sound and more.

YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.

Also Lumines Live being reconfirmed as coming is a boon to me, who will never own a PSP.

Arcade is seriously more fucking awesome than the goddamned retail games.

TonyDaTigger Sep 27, 2006 04:19 PM

Damn straight M00.

My $400 XB360, $200 in accessories, $500 worth of games turned into
a SFII coin-op machine for like 2 months.

We noticed.

We all noticed.

At least you finally realized the problem, we were about to stage an intervention.

Lizardcommando Sep 27, 2006 06:44 PM

Hmm, isn't this pretty much like the Doom port for the XBox that came with Doom 3: Collector's edition and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil?. I think I'll just go with Skulltag and ZDaemon for my classic Doom mulitplayer needs.

Kaleb.G Sep 27, 2006 06:48 PM

Now this is what I'm talking about. Would be awesome if we could get some DUKE3D up in here, but DOOM is another classic FPS favorite of mine. I want some multiplayer action.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Sep 28, 2006 07:33 AM

I dunno. My nostalgia for oldskool fps games took a mighty hit when I played Wolfenstein 3D that came with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I remembered it being awesome fun and now it's actually pretty dull.

Still, as Arcade additions go, this is a pretty neat one.

I'd go crazy if Duke Nukem 3D was released to XBL!:edgartpg: :superhappy: Anyway, that's cool about Doom being on XBL. Now if they could just get the Master Levels of Doom II on there....

Doom beats the hell out of Wolf3D. It's aged a lot better. Of course, the fact that you can play it on an updated engine with mouselook helps quite a bit.

I will definitely get this when I have some free time.

Anyone else notice the thread title? Xbox Live Arcade Arcade. Its so cool one must say arcade twwce.

I'd like the single-player Leaderboards to be fixed.

Mission complete time should be factored into the score. Period.

Also, I finished E1M2 with less then 100%. Then I went back later and got 100%, then finished the mission, and it didn't record it! I even reloded my save made before I completed the mission, and completing it again did nothing. I mean, the difficulty was the same (4: Ultra-violent), the time was faster, and everything was at 100%. Doesn't make any damn sense. I want my 10000 score for E1M2.

Newbie1234 Oct 5, 2006 03:01 PM

Hopefully they fix it, meanwhile I'm trying to complete the entire game before replaying and getting max points on every level.

Kaleb.G Oct 6, 2006 02:28 PM

Well, the second problem has been fixed. Last night, I loaded up my E1M2 end-mission save and hit the switch. Then I noticed the leaderboard had been updated with my 10000 score. Thank God.

One interesting thing I notice is that whenever I get a new or higher ranking on the leaderboard, my downloads stop for a minute or two and then automatically resume. I don't rememer this happening before. Perhaps downloading stuff interferes with the leaderboard updates, and they patched it to pause the downloads during this process?

Initially when I first heard it was released on Live Arcade, I thought "AMESOME, I going to go buy that right now.." Then a couple seconds later, I realized, I really don't care at all. I've had the game on PC for years, played it countless times, so why pay $10 for a game I already have and played tons of times. Multiplayer maybe, but I'm sure it can't be more fun than any new game.

Games that are the best for Live Arcade to me are Pac-man and Geometry Wars, etc. which are nice simple, easy games that are quick, and addictive for a while, and the only real purpose of playing them are to get better scores each time.

Newbie1234 Oct 6, 2006 08:03 PM

Well, to each his own. I personally had never really played through the entire original Doom without blatantly cheating. Everything that this new version provides is also a nice bonus.

For about 10 bucks, you can get the Doom Collector's Edition at Walmart or Target and not only will you get Ultimate Doom, but you will get Doom 2 and Final Doom. So let's see, that's about 96 levels with Doom 2 and both iwads from Final Doom (Evilution and the Plutonia Project) combined and then add the 4 episodes from Doom which have 9 levels each episode. So that's about 133 maps in all.

Oh and don't forget source ports! ZDoom is probably the most popular choice since it has alot of really cool mods and TC's like Action Doom and Super Sonic Doom. As for multiplayer stuff, Skulltag and ZDaemon are awesome. Skulltag has new weapons, new game modes, new maps, and bots. ZDaemon is fun too, but there's more European servers than US servers, at least as far as I could tell. Also, there are more people playing on ZDaemon. If you want to play Doom in glorified 3D and with hardware acceleration, you can either play in JDoom or Risen 3D.

So what was the point of this? Well, if you don't want to pay 10 bucks just for Doom, you can just head over to Walmart or Target or some other place and pay about 10 bucks for the Doom Collector's Edition and get Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom and then get a source port and play Doom with all the cool enhancements and bells and whistles!

- 200 Achievement points

- Splitscreen multiplayer

- Online Coop and Deathmatch
It's true that you can just play the many PC versions out there, but I doubt that you'll have such an easy time of finding others to play with you. It's the same situation with Street Fighter 2 (Mame multiplayer, Zsnes, etc. etc.). Plus everyone has headsets whether you know the person or not.

- Ranking and compare with your friends
It has your time, kill %, item collect % and secret % for every level. It also ranks your deathmatch and coop online.

I agree that at $10, it ain't cheap considering that anyone can just dl it for free for PC, but I'm personally satisfied with my purchase.

Kaleb.G Oct 9, 2006 02:58 PM

Newbie1234 summed up the reasons I bought this. Also, I have a 52" TV to play it on (I can't hook my PC up to it, and wouldn't want to for other reasons).

How do you guys like my rank on E2M8?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 10, 2006 10:38 PM

Damn you Kaleb. You make me realize just how terrible I am at this game. ;___;

I'll probably never get the Rampage achievement as well. Fuck you E4M1 and E4M2. =o

Kaleb.G Oct 13, 2006 06:03 PM

A couple of my friends are higher on the leaderboard than me right now, but they're blowing through the game. I'm perfecting it. I should have Inferno wrapped up by tonight. I'm looking forward to starting Thy Flesh Consumed.

Ultra-violence is hella fun. If it weren't for the respawning, I would try Nightmare, but even then it would be hard as fuck. As it stands, Nightmare is next to impossible, and the people who actually can play through it are demigods.

Kaleb.G Oct 28, 2006 02:40 PM

Well I beat the game a week ago but I forgot to post here. Episode 4 was damn hard at times. The first two missions were indeed the hardest, mostly due to a lack of available ammo. I'm really high up on the single player leaderboard right now. I would like to get my 200/200 achievements, but playing deathmatch online sucks my balls. Aside from lag and poor level selection (most maps are far too large), there's almost never anyone to play with. What a crock of shit.

I'll help you boost it. Message me sometime tonight on Live. I should be home around 12:30 AM CST, tonight.

Lizardcommando Oct 28, 2006 03:47 PM

I hate E4 too. It's so annoying how little ammo and health you get at the start of E4M1.

It's a shame alot of the maps in Doom are crappy for deathmatch. Like Kaleb G. said, the maps are usually too big for deathmatch. E1M1 is the only map that I like playing in DM. I wonder if Doom 2 will be going on XBLA.

So what's the maxplayerlimit for DM again? 4? Shit, too bad they couldn't raise it up to at least 8 or even 12 (16 may be a bit too much for some of these levels, even the bigger levels)
