The most valued game in the world nowadays?
 

After seeing that Atari games actually are being sold for a piece of shit I asked to myself, if this are basically the games that initiated all what's the reason that they worth nothing?

So, what generation has the most valued games? Is time an important factor?

Please keep it to games and not consoles or cabinets, and try to avoid checking Ebay and guides so you guys don't spoil it.

Emulation.

Without emulation widely available, I would say that even Atari 2600 games would be worth much more than they are today. It's kind of too bad, as I could see an industry of people who fix/maintain old video game systems and carts if emulation weren't available. On the other hand, emulation makes it so that they don't have to.

I think you're trying to use cash as a measure of "worth" here might not work because of this. For example, Pitfall II is "worth" a lot to me, but I wouldn't be willing to pay a lot of money for an actual physical copy or a working 5200 to play it on...

The majority of the Atari 2600 library will probably never be worth anything. Ever. Unless it's Custer's Revenge, coooz sooo sexy. I'd say the 32-bit generation probably has the largest amount of valuable-ish games, due to piss poor publishers at the time. Especially on the PAL side of stuff. Like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Riven and Guardian Heroes on Saturn are LUSTED after pretty often. I think everything Working Designs ever released in America's worth a bit.

PAL version of Terranigma on SNES is really, REALLY expensive on the internets. :( I've got an unlicensed NES game sitting around that is apparently extremely rare as it was only released here and in Hong Kong (Little Red Hood). Rare doesn't make it valuable though, as it's terrible.

The Zelda games for SNES/NES are pretty highly priced, especially the NES ones, I've seen them in the computer game stores for £24.99 (approx $47), and that's without the boxes or instructions. So i'd say that the SNES/NES era of games are the most valued because some the more rarer games can fetch a small fortune.

Agree with Infernal. 32-bit era probably has the most expensive games, due to the difficulties of emulation (I think). A lot of Saturn titles are at least 60 bucks. Radiant Silvergun is also a pricey game at $120+. Man, I wish I had that game.

A conspicuous number of SNES RPGs still sell at a high-price on internet auctions.
Apart from the obvious Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy et similia, I noticed games like Secret of Mana or Earthbound still ranking at a considerable cost.
Doesn't surprise me, though. It's the gaming generation that probably left the fondest memories in most players, all around the world. Lots of classic titles were produced during that specific time arc.

Time is no doubt an essential factor, but I think global (emotional) attachment counts as well.
And I think the 16-bit era wins in that aspect (though this may still vary, depending on one's region and the availability of certain games at the time).

Nada. Neogeo stuff still sells for absurd prices even though every game is emulated and easily available.

The most expensive games I know of are some Saturn games. Not just the 100-300$ stuff like Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon Saga (both titles are worth it though), but some of the japanese demo discs like Delisoba Deluxe. Which regularly goes for 60 000 yen on Yahoo Japan.

There's also the Hi-Saturn Navi system (Saturn with slim case + car adapter + on-the-fly karaoke controls + video cd card + GPS system + inbuilt LCD monitor), where the complete set would cost you more then a Playstation 3, on launch date, from ebay.

How much do those golden cartridged Zelda games on the SNES or whatever go for nowadays? I'm under the impression they're quite sought after.

Valkyrie Profile sells for multi-hundred dollar prices on ebay.

You people are talking abotu PS1 RPGs being the most valued games? Are you SERIOUS?

SD Gundam Dimension War (Virtual Boy) and Virtual Bowling* (Virtual Boy) are both worth SHITLOADS. Those NES competition carts are worth TONNES. The SNES Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox weekend competition packs are worth a good chunk of change. Many rare arcade PCBs are worth crazy amounts. There are extremely rare NES games worth lots too. Neo Geo stuff, as referenced above is also included. If you include stuff like Beta carts and the infamous english Mother NES cart then you've got even MORE pricey stuff.

Piccolo, VP's price has dropped sine the PSP rerelease, and it's been a while since it went for over 100 in a sensible auction or sale.

* Not Nester's funky bowling. I mean the Japanese game.

Of course, as I say that there are many copies on eBay that are sitting at 100 to 130 dollars, but there are also copies sitting at 50 to 80 bucks too, which makes more sense.

I think right now it's a little high because of VP2 being right around the corner. Shouldn't be too hard to wait a bit for it to go down again. I know I used to see copies going for 60 to 90 all the time. And that was, what? A couple months back when I was last checking?

Someday, I will spend a few hundred bucks and get a Saturn with all those games I missed. Someday.

Suikoden 2 is also pretty insane in pricing, and Konami were assholes enough to not even release the PSP remake here. Bastards.

Neo Geo games are still selling for a shitload of money, but in terms of specific games, I'd say the following have fetched high prices-

- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- Radiant Silvergun ($150 liek wut)
- Ikaruga (Dreamcast version)
- Gitaroo Man
- Rez
- Zelda gold carts
- Rare beta versions of NES games
- Final Fantasy V for Super Famicom
- Chrono Trigger

I'm willing to bet Shadow of the Colossus and Beyond the Beyond will be on that list in a few year's time.

SotC is a player's choice title. That game is common as hell now, with far too many in circulation to become rare.

For the most part, it's going to be the games that were restricted from one region. For Example, in the US....I would hazard a guess on Final Fantasy V for the SNES, Seiken Densetsu III, Shining Force III Ep. 2/3, and so on. I'd say right now, the 16-bit games are worth the most because this was a time of Innovation Explosion in video games, much greater than that of the previous 8-bit games as well as it's 32-bit successor.

Cept that I've seen some games go for over a thousand dollars on eBay. Some of the ones I listed, for example. PDS has never hit that.

I've always wanted to play the Virtual Boy. :( So crushed when they announced it wouldn't be released here, cried for weeks. Had to go put my eyes under a barcode scanner at Woolworths to pretend I was playing one.

I'm in agreement about the 32 bit era...You have import-only games worth a fortune and domestic ones with pitiful releases or demand (most good Saturn games, FFT, Dragonball GT and Valkyrie Profile for a time, Suikoden 2 is probably still worth a small fortune). Not sure any period before that was ever that active, Neo Geo aside. I'm taking my chances now and betting some of the lower print runs for PS2 (and DS) we're seeing now might see a similar jump.

I've tracked down, paid exortitant amounts for, and been bitten on the south forty by a lot of rare and allegedly cherished games that collector's hype had overvalued by half. But even putting aside relative value, we're still talking about games released to the public.
If we're really going for rare and valuable, how about the leaked and official master copy of the never-released English Earthbound Zero (which obviously wasn't called that, but you know what I'm getting at)?

By the way, I just ordered a MGS Japanese Edition (the one with the platinum font) and it includes a demo for Suikoden II, after seeing Suikoden mentioned above, I wanna know how much is worth it.

I paid the equivallent of 50 bucks for the 3 games at a mexican auction site.
