Okay....for those of you who are looking for more exposure to music, I think I just stumbled on to the greatist source of free music in awhile. No saving it, but I am thinking it is still worth it.

A part of the Music Genome Project

So here is what I have figured out...

1.) Go to the website and enter in an artist or track name that you want similar stuff from.
2.) It plays, and on every song you can decide whether or not you like it, and it makes a radio station of sorts of similar things.
3.) After awhile it requires you to make an account, but it is free.

Anyone else try this out before? It seems to actually work.

Yes, I've tried it and I was pleased with the results. Too bad there's no classical music or game/film/anime/tv music there... Only the 20020220 concert.

I made a thread about Pandora last year. It's really quite good, I even subscribed to it when it still cost money. Then they changed it to the current advertising-based model, and I got an advertising-free subscription for a whole year. I haven't used it for a while, though, but now that it seems to work well in Opera, maybe I'll try it out again.

Also, moved to Media Centre, since, well, there is no game music in Pandora. :confused:

There's some Yoko Kanno music, from Ghost in the Shell and maybe other series as well.

I love Pandora. Someone had recommended it to me and I gave it a listen. Yeah, too bad they don't have game music. And strangely enough, Yoko Kanno was the first person I stuck in Pandora.

I later moved onto other artists and since the two months I've been using it I've probably discovered like 10-15 artists whose music I really enjoy. I've bought some tracks and albums from listening to it. I've really enjoyed it.

I'm bumping this because Pandora is amazing. I just started to actually use it this weekend. I'd previously only listened to it in my lab when one of the PhD students was blasting it, but I'm loving it now that I'm making my own stations. I've got a bunch going for the different genres of stuff that I like. I'll have to eventually make a comprehensive station that has bits of everything that I like in one place. The only thing that really bothers me about it is the lack of classical music.

I'm going to try to make a Yoko Kanno themed channel now and see how that works out.

I've been using this for a while now, and I've just found a ton more music that I love. I highly recommend it.

i've been on Pandora for about a year now. I can't say i use it nearly as much as i used to, but sometimes i get their emails, then i go and check out what new stuff they have on my stations.

It's a great project, and i've shown many of my friends the light.

I used to use Last.fm more often for recommendations, but these days I just download anything vaguely interesting I can find. Pandora does, however, seem to be right about my tastes.

I tried it out just now and i can say i wasn't impressed at all.

I used the Fall as the basis for my search and ended up getting songs from such craptastic artists like neutral milk Hotel and the decemberists. bands that suck and don't even have anything in common with the fall.

Or maybe they do have something in common, except you just don't see what it is. The point of the thing is to give it more than a single term in order to give more refined results.

This is pretty good. I think I'm going to start using it a lot more now. It has been very accurate in the type of music that I like in the half hour that I have used it for.

I know the Fall is nowhere similar to any of the bands they listed as similar. I personally will stick to record store diving then relying on a indie hipsterism tool like this pandora thing is that just spews results back full of indie crap if the band you entered is affiliated with punk in any way or if you enter a metal band like Arsis, you get crap like Killswitch engage and norma jean.

Pandora seems like a tool made for people who really haven't expanded there musical base outside of stuff found at your local megastores or hipster sites like pitchfork.

The one thing that I have found Pandora useful for is listening to pre-WWII blues music, as they have some more obscure compilations in their databases. That being said, I haven't used it for a long, long time and don't know if they're as good for this as they used to be.
