Portal Website

I've made a quick search, but I don't think it's been mentioned yet.

Yeah, ok, so there's a thread about Portal, so ordinarily it wouldn't be worth making a new thread about the game's website. But see, that website is a little special. Take a look:

www.aperturescience.com

If you type "help", you receive a message. I assume there are other commands like that, but the most interesting one is "login", which allows you to, well, login. At that point you're asked for a username and password, the username doesn't seem to matter, and if you give the right passwork you can actually access a sort of "DOS-like" environment.

So get started exploring and report you findings here.

Also, if mods believe it should be merge with the original Portal thread, or sent to the place of laughs and games, or whatever else, then please do so. As if you needed my permission.

Eh, I went through, did the whole "login" bit, took the test, etc. Pretty lame if you ask me, but then again I'm not a big fan of this sort of viral marketing.

Some of the questions were pretty funny though, so it wasn't a total loss.

Yeah, I just found this and have been playing with it some. Here are my findings, spoilered in case anyone else wants to go through the thing themselves (as unlikely as that may be):

Spoiler:
"Help" doesn't really do anything other than display an amusing message.

"User" has the same affect as "login", I guess. It brings up a username then password. Username doesn't seem to matter. "Portal" as the password gets you to the dos prompt.

From there, "apply" is the only thing you can enter, as that's the only program that shows up if you type in "directory". This brings you to the application form which is just a huge series of really bizarre questions. It also gives you a huge (UIN(+L)) serial code, but it doesn't seem to serve any purpose, as even if you enter it correctly at the end of the questions, it still says that you didn't and leaves you in a dead end. The serial code changes if you stay on the page long enough so no matter what, you can't enter the right one.

The only thing of interest I've noticed is that some letters slowly fade in and out in the question text. I went through a few times and made sure to write them all down.

The result?

t h e c a k e i s a l i e.

Yep. "The cake is a lie." This kind of explains the random ascii cakes flickering in the background and the many questions that have cake in them.

So, if you enter "THECAKEISALIE" at the DOS prompt, you get a new page that has a note/discussion of an employee about current work conditions and a security camera feed. All keystrokes I have tried so far result in it switching to a budget table.

Edit: I like how I found a website that has the complete step by step guide to completing this immediately after I spent an hour or so figuring everything out.
