Soy ice cream?

I recently decided to stop using milk altogether because it causes some problems for me and just isn't worth it. I'm getting used to unsweetened Almond milk. So that left me with one problem what to do about ice cream? I freaking love ice cream.

So today I dared to buy a pint of soy ice cream. Green tea flavor.
It's actually surprisingly good. I don't think any non-dairy product can equal the richness of cream based ice cream. But it works. I'm eager to try other flavors now.

Anyone else eat Soy Ice cream or any other alternatives (rice based) before?
What's your favorite flavor? The brand I tried was Soy Delicious.

Healthfood stores have the best selection of flavors but my local super market actually carries a few flavors of Soy Delicious.

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Sep 3, 2006 12:57 AM

To be honest I find Soy to be extremely disgusting, but everyone is different. I actually didn't think making ice cream out of it was possible, perhaps something to try before I die :)

The company Tofutti makes mini (and by mini I mean mini) ice cream sandwiches called cuties that are delicious. I haven't tried any of their other stuff, though.

:eyebrow: The few times I drunk soy milk were disappointing. I can't imagine soy ice cream...

Ah, I love those things! The local food co-op has a big cooler full of them, and I always wind up buying a couple every time I go there. They're so soft and tasty...I actually think that they're better than regular ice cream sandwiches.

...and now I really want one.

Soymilk taste varies considerably depending on flavor and brand, so whenever people tell me they don't like it I ask what kind they tried. For my money, Silk and Pearl soymilk are the best, as long as it's unflavored and unsweetened. There's still a residual 'nutty' overtone to it, but other than that it doesn't taste that different from regular (ie: 2% fat) milk. However, the people that only like fat-free milk may find it a bit thick. Pearl (by Kikkoman) soymilk is thinner.

As for the tofutti cuties, I loooooove them! Especially the wild berry flavor... I tried the mint thinking I would love them, but discovered they use spearmint. Eck. That has to be my least favorite mint. The regular ice cream is good as well. Soy just has a very creamy texture, so it works well as ice cream.

I've never tried either of those, but I hate spearmint, so I don't think I'll be trying that one. I love the plain old vanilla and chocolate ones, though.
