Little Miss Sunshine

http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.ya...eposterbig.jpg

The Hoover family treks from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, California, to fulfill the deepest wish of 7-year-old Olive, an ordinary little girl with big dreams. Along the way the family must deal with crushed dreams, heartbreaks, and a broken-down VW bus, leading up to the surreal Little Miss Sunshine competition itself. Stars Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano and Alan Arkin. Trailer

Impressions with some spoilers
Spoiler:
The best movie I'd seen in a long time, it's a dramedy but possibly the greatest feel good movie ever. It's just so awkward and sincere, like when Sheryl was eating the popsicle in the beginning of the movie, who really does that except in real life. The only problem I had was that I felt that Frank's issue didn't really get resolved or even touched upon, Olive and Dwayne's quirks are "solved" in the end but the adults didn't really get addressed in the resolution. But I guess the ending conversation about Proust and suffering sort of ties that into a somewhat decent conclusion. Of course Steve Carell stole every scene he was in but I was actually kind of fond of Paul Dano's character, he was surprisingly complex beyond that angst teenager role

Don't be a jerk, watch this movie even if you have to sneak in after Snakes on a Plane.

Just saw it for the second time like an hour ago. The best film of the year for me. It was one of my favorite movies ever. Great score too. I love this movie and it reminds me a lot of my own family. A lot of great funny parts also with a lot of emotional, meaningful scenes.

It was filmed a lot where I and Kaleb G live. Actually, litterally on the cross street where I and Kaleb live there are parts filmed. And at the beach where we live. Parts on the pier and in a hotel too. It's so awesome.

Go see this :)

Kaleb.G Aug 20, 2006 07:13 PM

Yeah, the "Redondo Beach" part at the end is actually filmed in Ventura. Other stuff may be filmed here as well, but that's all I know of. It's strange because I never even knew they were filming in town until I saw the movie.

Anyway, this movie is excellent. The characters, story, locales, and acting are all good and unique. This movie had me laughing several times through throughout. It has some depressing points, but always seems to pick up again quickly. Recommended.

I just found out this is playing at a small theater around my house. I've been really excited about seeing this ever since a few reviews popped up on the net. It looks terrific. Just my brand of humor, too.

TheReverend Aug 21, 2006 12:59 AM

I enjoyed the QT trailer on Apple.com, so I'm interested. Will keep you posted on my thoughts and will enjoy reading any of yours.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 21, 2006 01:00 AM

I saw that it got a ranking of around 90% on Rottentomatoes.com, which almost never happens.

I tried to convince my friend, on Friday, that it'd be worth seeing since Steve Carrell is always good, but he was skeptical. We saw Talladega Nights instead, and while that was funny, I was a bit curious as to how much better Little Miss Sunshine would've been.

Hell, even the negative reviews hardly felt negative. It's like they were punishing the movie for being sweet, and no other reason.

Little Miss Sunshine looks like great movie. I want to see the movie but it wasn’t release where I live which sucks. I have to wait for it to come out on DVD. From the looks of the trailers Steve Carell looks hilarious. It nice to see him do something different compared to characters he plays on The Office,40 year virgin, TDS. I’m hoping he doesn’t do what Will Ferrell does and plays the characters over and over again

I'd rather like to see this film myself, if not just for the one kid who doesn't talk because of Friedrich Nietzsche. It's that kind of weird humor that I really enjoy, and if it's as sweet as you people say it is, I've been waiting all year for something that makes me feel good about myself. Seriously. Why does everything "great" have to also be "super depressing"? I'm looking at you, Hemmingway.

Er, um, all I mean to say is that it looks like a really nice film, and I'd like to see it.

Andrew Evenstar Aug 22, 2006 01:31 AM

Trust me guys/girls, this is the must see movie of the year. I'm in love with it :)

gidget Aug 22, 2006 02:45 PM

I finally went and saw this last night, and I really really liked it. It was cute, but I left the theater feeling depressed. Maybe that's just me, though. In any case, I'll be buying this on DVD when it comes out.

Has anyone else seen this movie? Don't tell me all you guys watch are B-movie wannabes like Snakes on a Plane.

guyinrubbersuit Aug 29, 2006 07:32 PM

I saw this movie and I rather enjoyed it. The child pagent thing creeped me out, but then I hate seeing little girls dolled up like that. Creepy as all hell.

Havent had a chance honestly. Its been on my list since I saw the preview for it, but I cant think of anyone else who would enjoy seeing it with me. All my friends are dieing to go see Crank this Friday.

Well see how it goes. I might try to squeeze in both.

kat Aug 29, 2006 11:07 PM

I can't believe you might watch Crank over Little Miss Sunshine.

The Plane Is A Tiger Aug 30, 2006 12:33 AM

The tiny Fine Arts theater here finally started showing this, so I'm hoping to go catch it this weekend. I heard about Little Miss Sunshine a few weeks ago when I saw Strangers With Candy, and it looked great from the first preview.

The title has already gotten me in trouble once though. I mentioned to a friend that I was thinking of seeing it this weekend, and he thought I was sarcastically calling a friend of ours Little Miss Sunshine because she's in the hospital and obviously not in the best moods.

Andrew Evenstar Aug 30, 2006 01:05 AM

People... go see this damn movie!!!!

Not really my choice. I could argue it, but im in the minority with my friends to see this.

kat Aug 30, 2006 11:03 PM

Get new friends.

omglasplagas Aug 31, 2006 07:53 AM

I saw this movie a while ago, and i remember that my main plight afterwards was:

The trailer revealed way too much. Some of the best scenes / punchlines got ruined.

All in all, a good movie.. if not a bit disturbing

Couldn't agree more. I greatly enjoyed the film but...

Spoiler:

I was a little dismayed when Alan Arkin died off. Luckily it was late in the film but he was integral too it. They did a good job of going on without him. I would not be a good film critic but he had a very commanding presence on scree--moreso than Carrell or the others. Keeping him in the back of the van did add some amusing levity which made up for it.

All in all it was a great movie and despite going into it thinking it was going to be another contemporary attempt to make an art house film (many of the recent attempts have been failures in my book). But, it wasn't really, so if that is your worry... you should have no worries.

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 3, 2006 05:48 PM

I just got back from seeing this and I loved it. The tiny arts theater that was showing it must have been pretty happy too; it was a sold out show. I showed up half an hour early to find a 20 minute ticket line, and it kept piling up even farther behind me. Unfortunately, I ended up sitting next to three old ladies who never shut up (although they got quiet once the actual movie started) and one of them kept laughing at the most inappropriate times possible. Still, an excellent film.

Thirded, especially the ones who looked like their heads were MASSIVE with tiny bodies.

Fourth'd or so.

I just returned from seeing this with a friend, and I loved it. It was irreverent, which is something that I prize highly in comedic efforts, and I find that people either aren't doing irreverent enough or doing it right these days. It was surprisingly dark when it wanted to be, but surprisingly funny when it wanted to be - the scene where she dedicates the performance was perfect, and the oft-repeated beat-up van gag didn't get old. All around, a wonderful film that tosses you back and forth between drama and madcap hilarity in a unique look at a roadtrip gone horribly wrong.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 10, 2006 06:41 PM

I just saw this last night in a two screen theater with a few friends. Luckily, we all got our tickets early, because the showing ended up selling out nearly twenty minutes before the showtime. Once we got in there, the room was, of course, packed. I was so glad to see this kind of film getting a big audience.

Now, as for the actual movie, even with the very high expectations I went in with, I was amazed at how well everything played out. In my opinion, it was a near perfect movie. Things were comedic when they needed to be, but seemlessly flowed into drama when that was necessary. This was easily the best film I've seen in theaters in many years. If you haven't already, get out there and see this before it's too late. You won't regret it.

QFT

Saw this movie about a week ago, and forgot to come report. Let me echo what so many have said, this is a fantastic movie experience. I haven't had a movie pull so many emotions out of me in a long while. It made me laugh very loudly, had me feeling the characters pains, had me smiling like a kid, and had me disturbed/angered all at the same time. Just a wonderful, wonderful flick. Do yourself a favor and watch this film soon.

Oh, and Devotchka rules!!
