When beer would take too long to get you drunk...

Right, so we already have a thread about what beer people drink. But what about everything else?

So what do people around here drink, excluding beer?

I'll admit I don't have that much experience, I'm 18 so I've only been able to (legally) purchase alcohol for less than a year. Still, I've been able to try different stuff, and so far I'd have to say that Canadian Club whiskey is probably my favorite. Not to say I don't like the occasional Wild Turkey, or whatever rum or brandy I might have on hand, when I feel like it, but I seem to enjoy Canadian Club in almost any circumstances. It probably has to do with the fact that one of the first bottle of decent alcohol I've been able to have access to was a bottle of 1981 Canadian Club someone opened in 2005 and apparently didn't like much. I, on the other hand, was quite fond of it.

I don't drink, but I have friends that have tried almost everything. One of the more popular drinks for people to get drunk is Jack Daniels. There are also the mixes of gin and rum in sodas to prevent police on campus from seeing alcohol since the campus is in a dry town and it's against college policy to have alcohol on campus.

All most of my buddies could think about when I told them about my trip to England was absinthe. They wanted me to bring them some, but I don't want to be responsible for messing them up if they don't water it down enough.

I hate beer. It tastes like shit and takes too long to get me drunk. Of course many people love it for reasons other than getting drunk and they have grown accustomed to the taste. As for me, I go for the least amount of liquid and in the most potent and concentrated blasts.

My favorite drink would have to be tequila. The entire lime and salt action, I love it and I always have a great time taking shots of tequila with my friends.

For most parties, I drink vodka. It's essentially tasteless [I don't like the tasted varieties] and it offers me a nice pace in terms of drinking.

Rum and brandy are good as well. I've always had good times with these drinks, and they've always gotten me drunk by the 4th or 5th shot. [I only started drinking this year]

But I've had some CRAZY times with 151. By the fourth shot I'm usually just fucked up.

Other than beer, I generally go for Vodka Iron Brew (WKD). But other than that I don't drink anything other than beer, well I do have a liking for Newcastle Brown Ale, which is a cross between lager and bitter.

Why would you even think of committing such a sacrilegous act? :(

Even though beer is my preferred method of inebriation, every once in a while you just gotta have your buzz coming and hitting you like a freight train. For that, I recommend Wild Turkey 101.

Even though it's extremely potent and semi-hallucinogenic absynthe is another great drink that will have you on your ass in 3 shots flat; just ask Ben. :tpg:

In Mexico we have this really bitter and extremely potent liquor called "pulque" which is made from agave extract which I believe is called "aguamiel" (honey water). It spoils easily, so as soon as it's made, the batch has to go and I've seen a group of 4 of us off a clay jug which I would put at about 60-70oz in one night. Few things can give me hangovers that bad. :p

Of course... You can't go wrong with tequila and lime. Just make sure you're drinking something good like Cazadores, Centenario or Patron.

You beat me to it!

When I go to the bars, I usually order up a Bombay & tonic, or a Ketel One gimulet. For all you kids and non-drunks, Bombay Sapphire is gin, and Ketel One is vodka. Both are a bit high on the shelf, but definitely not the most expensive.

I have a ~40 year old bottle of Aqua Vitale that I take a shot from once per year. It is the most amazing liquor because it tastes like silk, doesn't dehydrate you, and it makes you feel lighter than air without impairing your senses. It is the closest thing to heaven I have ever been to.

I always wanted to splurge on a bottle of really good alcohol. There is a really small place in a hidden strip mall right next to the lake (Lake Michigan for people not familiar with Chicago) where this fella sells bottles of alcohol from $120 to $5000, depending on what you are looking for. I would love to buy another bottle of Aqua Vitale (the first was a present from a good friend).

Locke Aug 19, 2006 01:01 PM

Beer? Too long? Bah - if you can pound a 12 pack in 15 minutes, you're good to go!

If you can't do that just yet... Hang around with some pilots for a week or so, and then you should have the required skills.

If beer isn't available, I'll take double or triple shots of anything available :)

Dr. Chud Aug 19, 2006 01:13 PM

I use either Jack Daniels or Old Granddad whiskey if I really want to speed up the buzz, although beer is my main alcohol of choice. I've heard long-island iced tea is some potent shit, but seeing as I've only tried while very drunk to begin with, I couldn't really gauge it's effectiveness. It tasted great, though. I have to try it again.

Sol Aug 19, 2006 03:03 PM

So far I haven't found a liquor that I don't enjoy. My first was Captain Morgan's spiced rum, which holds a dear place in my heart and usually is what I like to bring to start things off with. Others I like include Belvedere, Grey Goose, Tanqueray, Bacardi 151 if I feel like getting straight to point B, and Glenlivet if I feel like sipping a drink to relax.

Most of the time I just stick with rums and vodkas, so I've forgotten a few of the different ones my friends and I have bought.

I don't know, they just tell me that it needs to be diluted b/c it can seriously mess you up.

Majin yami Aug 19, 2006 04:14 PM

After drinking a third of a bottle of 40% brandy at a house party and becoming paraletic for the night, I've steered well clear of spirits. Unfortunately, I absolutely adore whiskey.

Bernard Black Aug 19, 2006 04:36 PM

Oh christ anything but vodka and sambuca. I love spirits (possibly too much). For whiskey I'd have to say Jamesons is my favourite, with Gin it would be Gordons and Baccardi is my favourite rum. I don't like dark rum much though. I think vodka was ruined for me by Blavod (it's black vodka). One word - gloop =( Horrific stuff. I've also acquired quite a taste for tequila shots ever since my last proper drink outing. Cocktails are wonderful too though. As I type I'm drinking Long Island Iced Tea. Possibly my favourite besides Martini's.

As for bad experiences with drinking that should teach people a lesson, since I was a teenager I've had at least 3 incidents that I can remember of being paraletically drunk, on a variety of spirits. It seems to have done the trick because ever since those times I've known my limits.

It will seriously mess you up if you mistreat it. Pour yourself a double shot, sip it slowly, and you are good for the evening. If you have to dilute it, then you shouldn't mess with it. I am allergic to alcohol and I break out in hives all over my body when I consume too much liquor, but even I can handle one single shot of the stuff.

Absinthe can be mixed with very specific ingredients, but is only best in it's purest form (with a little peyote for good measure  )

Wojo Aug 19, 2006 05:26 PM

I like the mixed drinks. Usually a screw driver (vodka and orange juice) is what I pick.

Well, it is pretty damn potent and semi-hallucinogenic but if you're out on a mission to off a bottle in one night, the bottle might end up offing you. Take one shot and you're good for the night.

YeOldeButchere Aug 19, 2006 11:29 PM

I've always wondered, since I've heard a number of different accounts, what absynthe actually does. I mean, I've heard people say it really fucks you up, while other say it's nothing different from normal alcohol. Who's right?

Also, I forgot to say so in my first post, but there is one thing which I absolutely cannot stand: Amaretto. The stuff I've tried anyway. Merely thinking about it makes me want to throw up. In some circumstances, merely thinking about actually does make me throw up. I really can't stand it.

Lazyguy Aug 20, 2006 12:07 AM

Everclear is some of the stongest stuff i've ever had. Its pretty much pure alchool and will burn out your mouth if you drink too much at once. Otherwise i like jagerbombs and screwdrivers when beer isnt doing the job.

Fleshy Fun-Bridge Aug 20, 2006 02:09 AM

Easy. 10 year (or older) single malt Islay scotch, neat.

*AkirA* Aug 20, 2006 07:09 AM

Cant stand the taste of most liquor, but I have a friend that is a diehard Crown Royale drinker. He prefers it straight from the bottle, not mixed with coke or anything like that.

One night, he polished off a whole bottle by himself. We all got the privledge of staying awake to make sure he didnt choke on his own vomit.

That's a sipping scotch and you're really not supposed to mix it with anything or drink more than a couple of glasses over ice cubes. If he was on a mission to off a whole bottle in one night he wasted his money and should have bought some fucking Jim Beam bourbon instead. :/

Both actually. I think it depends on your preparation. If you do it the classic way (shot of absinthe, place sugar on a slotted spoon and pour water over it) then from what I've heard it really can fuck you about quite a bit. One of my friends did this and he said he was hallucinating fish swimming around his house. Considering the contents of absinthe this doesn't sound exaggerated to me. I've heard several accounts of this nature when it's been prepared properly. As for drinking it straight, from personal experience it's just like regular alcohol but it gets you drunk much faster due to its high percentage. (On a side note, I don't know if this happens to other people but the first time I tried it when I was younger my parents thought I was stoned. I still have a picture my mother took of my eyes and it looks like I've had a few spliffs or something =s).

Odd thing is I hate the taste of drinks like pernot and sambuca but I don't mind absinthe. I'll never understand why.

I don't think I could've put that better myself.
From the ones I've tried, Laphraoig has to be my favourite.

First thing is, everybody has a specific tolerance to alcohol. I friend Joe can drink straight Everclear and come back for more. I, myself, who is allergic to alcohol, will hang on to the floor to keep from falling after about five beers. Now, as for the specifics of Absinthe, if it came from Europe (or more specifically Holland), it has peyote in it. Peyote is a halloucinagenic drug that, when taken straight up with no buffer, will make you halloucinate for about four to five days straight. Hence, European Absinthe will fuck you up. American Absinthe is the same formula, but with no peyote cactus. It will still mess you up if you have one shot, but you won't halloucinate.

Everclear is rye alcohol, and has a proof of 180 (90% alcohol). It is rarely served at bars in the first place for it's fire hazard attributes. I am not familiar with any spirits that are served at bars that are more potent, and the only form of drink I have heard that is stronger would be pure, clean Moonshine (200 proof, 100% distilled alcohol). I have heard of people dying of alcohol poisoning through Everclear, but I still use it in my personal bar when I mix up a Green Goddamn.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Aug 20, 2006 10:43 PM

Fatt, absinthe contains wormwood extract, not peyote. If it had peyote in it, people would wind up tripping for days. Wormwood is disputedly attributed to be a mild hallucinogen, though.

Trigunnerz Aug 20, 2006 11:53 PM

Dude. Just drink Ever Clear. That shit is almost pure alcohol. I took a shot of that. And I was gone in few minutes.
