Super Mario 64 Soundtrack Question

This has been bugging the crap out of me for eons. Does anyone know the name of the main instrunment in Dire Dire Docks (Soundtrack - Track 09)? I just can't figure it out, and I've been looking for the real world equivilant for years. Is the sound based off of an actual instrunment, or is it a purely synthasized sound, or a combination of other instrunments?

Are you referring to the melody? If so, I don't believe it's emulating a real unstrument. However, the N64's cound capabilities weren't that great, so it could be a weak attempt at resembling a real instrumet (maybe some sort of low-pitched celesta). As far as I can tell though, it's probably just a custom synth program.

EDIT: Dire Dire Docks is rad.

It sounds like a standard MIDI electric piano to me. In fact, I'm positive that's what it is.

You can find a similar sounding instrument on almost any MIDI program or keyboard.
