Kow Otani

So just today I listen (again) to OST of Shadow of Colossus, I must say the album is quite good. At first I have impression of listening to Movie score, thanks to the heavy use of ambient music. But as I listen the whole album, I realized I was wrong, the music is truly beautiful, the harmony and the melody goes well, giving simulatenous impression of classical music and impressionistic music. Even though main themes are bit vague, but I salute he could make this album sounds like a real epic.

So does anyone familiar with Koh Otani's works? do you have recommendation? He's quite new composer for me, so I dont know much of his background.

The only other work I'm familiar with is his score for the anime "Haibane Renmei," which I highly recommend.

Kow Otani is my favorite composer right now. He totally blew me away with Wander and the Colosus. As far as I know, that was his first foray into the world of game music composition. He's mostly known for his work in anime. Dhsu has already mentioned Haibane Renmei, which is really good, but he other great anime works include: Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Eyeshield 21 and Outlaw Star. All the 3 of these scores are brilliant. None as genius as Wander, but brilliant nonetheless.

Damn, I wish he would have brought some of what he did for Outlaw Star over to SotC...That was some good stuff. I don't remember a great deal from Daphne (weak show), but I do remember the music being one of the lone standouts. I can also vouch for Gundam Wing and some of Wild Arms TV (half seems to be standard orchestral-style stuff, the other is some much more interesting crazy shit).

I'm indifferent overall to SotC...Like I keep saying in the BSC, maybe after I play the game, the music will have more of an effect on me. The anime scores I mentioned above though, I do recommend highly. Outlaw Star's music = gold.

Full list (maybe) here:

I'm mostly familiar with the work he did on Shakugan no Shana as well as Haibane Renmei. I could pretty much tell it right away with a comparison of some of the melodies used in Shadow of the Colossus to the stuff he put forth in Shana. Both of them are really good soundtracks.

He also composed the Wild Arms Anime soundtrack - he is a very diverse composer. Wander is to amazing. Outlaw Star is a crazy soundtrack. Hope to hear more game work from him.

Same, the album is genius, it made the game even more amazing than it was and it's incredible to listen to on its own. I hope he does more.
