Happiness is...

Real or just a distraction?

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Aug 11, 2006 09:39 PM

It's a warm gun.

Metaconsciou§ Aug 11, 2006 09:41 PM

Lately, I feel my happy moments are more distractions than anything. But I believe it is possible to obtain true happiness through actualization.

Not to say I disagree.

Summonmaster Aug 12, 2006 12:10 AM

Sadly, a distraction. It seems to fleet away quickly, even the best moments.
Not to be a pessimist, but unless I'm in a constant state of happiness over an extended period of time, then it's more or less a welcome change.

Although when I know I don't have anything to worry about for a while (eg. not anticipating stuff I don't want to do), then I'm happy.

Miki4 Aug 12, 2006 02:56 AM

I'm trying to remember more & more Happy Times, it helps me alot!

Sol Aug 12, 2006 12:44 PM

Happiness is real. Thinking about the times I had back when I lived in California with my insane druggie friends is proof enough to me. The grin that lights my face when I recall insane antics or plot future ones is more evidence to the point. I'm sure everyone has memories of enjoyable times, or are living them as we type.

More important, though, what do you mean by distraction? A distraction from what?

Duck-Man Aug 12, 2006 01:16 PM

Happiness is great. It can be common or rare to others. Either way hold on to it.

SOJC Aug 12, 2006 03:05 PM

I have had an explanation of why you can never find true happiness, but I'm happy when around friends and most worries dissipate away until I'm by myself again...so in part I'd say it's real but I'd also say it's a distraction so...it's a bit of both...
Happiness when I'm by myself is rare and often caused by music but that happiness disappears quickly...

Duck-Man Aug 12, 2006 07:12 PM

Same with me. Being around friends make me happier and gets rid of all the worries i have.
Btw SOJC love your sig. This world definitely needs to be spoonier.

Hmm, perhaps an emptiness I feel? A distraction from fear? Abandonment? I'm not so sure myself.

Nahual Aug 12, 2006 09:42 PM

Happiness is short lived. Many things make me happy.

Dr. Chud Aug 13, 2006 08:41 PM

Happiness is both real and a distraction. It's usually a positive distraction.

Ballpark Frank Aug 13, 2006 08:57 PM

The only thing happiness distracts me from is starting jukeboxes with my fist and spreading the plethora of STDs I have accumulated over the years. SRSLY Fonzie is the man.

That said, my father is fond of saying, "Happiness is having more good days than bad." I don't necessarily agree with that, but he's right. Why work towards anything but happiness? What's the point of that? The way I see it, happiness isn't the distraction, everything else is.

Happiness is being at peace with what you have rather than desperately trying to acquire more with the pretext of making yourself "happy".

Yes, yes. Happiness is only as far away as you let it be. It can be hard to remind oneself of this though... -_-

sleipner Aug 13, 2006 10:01 PM

Happiness is real...it's fleeting i know but so is sadness (unless you have a medical condition)...sadly most people don't just overexaggerate the bad times, they under emphasize the good times they had... it makes me sad for humanity.

munchkin13 Aug 14, 2006 06:48 AM

Happiness is a distraction which takes your mind off all the crap thats going on so it's a good thing. But it's also real because when you can feel it and it occurs all on its own its real.

Fatt Aug 14, 2006 10:30 AM

It depends on what your happiness is derived from. If you are happy because you are married to a wonderful person, then that happiness is generally real. If you are doing drugs to escape the reality of the fact that you have nothing else going for you, then it is just a distraction.

Not all happiness has the same weight to it.

I'd argue that's not happiness at all, because even the person hopped up knows it's manufactured and fake.

So like.... Make up your mind, dear.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Aug 14, 2006 11:18 AM

I think happiness is neither real NOR a distraction.

The definition of happiness varies from person to person, naturally. Because of this, it can have no tangible definition. Money is not always happiness, nor is love or health.

At the same time, happiness is incredibly important to survival. What makes a person happy is usually what gives them hope and motivation to move on through life.

Personally, I think happiness comes to me in the small, simple things. If you can't enjoy a bright sunny day or a simple act of kindness, you're fucked. All you will ever do is sit around waiting for the HUGE shit, which is far and few between.

Once you enjoy the simple, basic things, you can find that happiness is neither a distraction or a reality - nothing lasts forever and nothing is perfect. Accept things and roll with it.

Of course, words are just symbols we use to convey some level of meaning or feeling. Everything is relative. And yes, if one can find happiness in the small things then you will lead a generally happy life. However, there is something to be said against complacency - not just with yourself, but with all things. Accepting everything as it is, and toughing it out isn't always going to cut it. There is valuable practicality in being realistic, however, there is hope in our ideals. If we can approach our ideals with a flexible grasp on realism we can obtain a much better quality life for all.

Yea, you're the reason people are never happy with their lives.

You can sit there and think about how the stones never move or how the trees always move, and RETHINK REALITY a million times - you will always be right where you started after all is said and done. YOU WILL DIE, but BEFORE you die, you will LIVE. Thats all it boils down to. Your bullshit crap about REALITY and DISTRACTION are YOUR distractions.

No matter your path or philosophies in life, you need to take things in stride and appreciate the stupid shit.

Also, the attempt at being deep fails. You should give up.

How can I possible account for everyone's unhappiness? In the end we are who we are, not what we are told. If what I say upsets, disgusts, irritates you, then by all means, execute your free will by ignoring it, or contesting it, as you already have.

YES. Indeed they are MY distractions, not yours; I was not attempting to superimpose them over your own. I can only explain, describe, postulate from my own perspective. I can only speak from my own perspective, I was in no way trying to speak for you, or the greater whole, humanity. I earnestly believe there is worth in our ideals. I am not suggesting that we should go out of our way to be dissatisfied. NO, we should be happy, now, where we are, for what we have - but - there are problems and issues in this world, not just on the individual level. I speak in concern for all us, as a race. We have farther to go, more to accomplish, we have not yet reached the peak of our evolution.

I am who I am. You are who you are. I am not play-acting here, I am not perfect. I am not where I would like to be yet, but I value my thoughts as well as my actions. And I appreciate others thoughts and actions as well, even yours, though you obviously disagree or misunderstand my position. We are all free to think and act as we please. I only wish to share my thoughts. Yes, in the end, it is what it is. However, not only through my actions, but through the sharing of my thoughts and speculations as well, I feel I find out a great deal more about who I am as well as who others are.

Edit: Sorry for the tag errors, they have been corrected.
