They had an episode about this on Mythbusters this week~

I've tried it and it definately works.

For best results chill it and use 5 pepermint Mentos.

For a taller and longer spout you can drill a 1/8 inch hole in the top, attach the Mentos together via the apparatus of your choice, run a string through the hole, screw in the cap and drop them in.

It's gotta be Diet Coke with a mentos that isn't coated in some candy/gel surface. The mentos pill/mint sets off a shitload of CO2 due to its surface area (surface is crater-rittled on a close-up view)

I've done this before, and it definitely worked for me. I did it near a stop sign, and it shot about two or three feet higher than the sign. It was pretty cool.

What a sticky day that must've been. Pretty interesting stuff though.

My class did a demenstration of it and we filled a vile that was about 8" tall with mentos. It was pretty cool, but I wonder what would happen if someone had fast enough reflexes that they could screw the cap back on before the geyser?

Huh, I managed the same reaction using sweettarts and any brand of soda, diet or otherwise. Admittedly, it wasn't as spectacular as in the video, but it was enough that it ruined peoples drinks when I'd slip one in.

It'd deform the bottle. If done to a major enough scale, the bottle would explode like dry ice in water, but the reaction is a bit too short in this case. It'd just make the bottle bulge at the middle most likely.

Has anyone tried putting Mentos in a soda can? I imagine that might be pretty fun to watch as well.

I've always wanted to try this with my friends. They showed me this video a while ago.

We're planning to pull it off sometime, but reading this, I suppose it's better to do this with the Diet Coke chilled. I'll keep that in mind.

Temperature doesn't matter. It has to do with the ingredients. Putting it into your mouth then drinking diet coke will cause the same reaction. Once again, they did this on Mythbusters this last week (new episode) =p

I remember seeing Letterman have a couple guys show a demonstration with around 50+ bottles of diet Coke. It was actually quite cool.

My college pre_calc professor showed this video to the class ^_^.
