PINK & theft/misuse of artistic property of Martin F. Edmond
 

The short version -> In her music video for "U + Ur Hand", Pink blatantly used stolen designs and ideas from Martin F. Emond's work (a New Zealand artist and comic book person).

Pink and her producers did not ask permission to use these images, nor did they even acknowledge that their material was taken from someone else's work.

Martin F. Edmond is probably best remembered for his comic book artworks which include "White Trash" (1992), his work on "2000AD" (the "home" of Judge Dredd), and DC's "Lobo" miniseries. He died in 2004 (That's right, not only did Pink steal, but she shamelessly did so from a dead man)

The rights to Martin F. Edmond's work are currently owned and controlled by Illicit Streetwear.


Frankly, I find the theft of other's intellectual property utterly disgusting... And the sheer blatancy and lack of any respect in this instance only heightens how appalling it is.

It's too blatant. Seems like a publicity stunt. That designer is probably related to Pink somehow.

I'll bet that she didn't think anything of it, and thought she could get away with it.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything bad is going to come of it for her.

Do you pirate any music? Shows? Games? Any at all, even the obscure "only from Japan or whatever" releases as well.

Internet piracy has nothing to do with someone taking credit for another artists' work. It's not like after you download songs you tell people that you wrote or performed them.

While I agree it's very different, piracy is still theft of intellectual property.

This is hardly theft of intellectual property because the video only depicts concepts from said comic book author. It would be another issue if the video used the exact same images, but this is just some kind of "re-enactment" inspired by certain characters and poses.

Or should everybody who dresses up as Sephiroth on a public event be forced to pay monetary credit to Square or the Final Fantasy character designer?

They probably would if they stood to gain any 'significant' monetary advantage by doing so, Square would enforce their ownership of the Sephiroth character.

There are tons of conventions where you can win a lot of money and/or prizes for your cosplay and nobody even cares about that. Why should we care about Pink dressing up like some character from a comic? That said, I'm sure there are tons of music video clips out there with somebody dressed up as Superman.

My point is that the whole matter is blown entirely out of proportion, especially since the comic book author is already dead. At least us few have learned about his works now. Isn't that all he would ever ask for if he was still alive? Seeing how his intelectual property is now owned by some emo fashion company, I hardly see any problem at all. Besides, who originally got this thing rolling? The raving Martin F. Edmond fanboys or the clothing company keen on making some extra bucks?

I'd hardly call Pink an artist- except maybe a rip-off artist, or perhaps a con-artist.

Whether or not there will be any legal rammifications regarding infringement (I doubt it) the only people that will notice this will be those that have seen the internet story. Pink's fanbase isn't the type that would recognize anything having to do with comic books even if she was wearing a goddamn spider-man suit in her vid. Instead it'll be, "OMG, did you see Pink's new video?! She looks so hot; her stylist is amazing!!!"

I remember getting pissed back when Usher did a video and tried to rip-off the costumes from A Clockwork Orange.
