Formatting and Firefox

Im getting ready to format, and I'm working on backing up what I need, I have a firefox question, I have saved passwords and blah blah, is there a way I can keep that list? or do I have to write down all the passwords and put them all in manualy again when I reinstall =/

You can backup the entire firefox config by backuping the 'Documents and Settings' directory on the main partition (most of the time this is C:\).

If you don't want to backup all stuff in Docs and settings then go into 'Documents and Settings', then into the directory of the user that was using firefox (for me this is 'Administrator') then into 'Application Data' and take a look into the 'Mozilla' directory. All firefox data should reside there, also stuff like mails, bookmarks, the internet cache (clean that before doing backup).

Alright, so,

The passwords are in the signons.txt file, what else in there should I keep?

And! When I reinstall Firefox, I can just move the signons back into the folder and it should take it? I can re-download the extensions no problem, it was just the passwords list that was getting me worried.

Why don't you backup the entire firefox directory?
I don't know if simply importing one special file works. At least for me (i'm using seamonkey) this procedure didn't work, maybe because I have a master pw set and the data is crypted (and some hash part is changed when installing on another system or after a format).

I dont have a master PW, but.. well, here's an entry in the txt file.

But hey, if I backup the entire FF dir, whats the point of reinstalling?

Ah yes, I see - the data also seems to be crypted if you're not using a password. Then I don't recommend only keeping this single file. There is obviously another part of key data in another file that is used for decryption of the stored data. Without this other file (and I don't know which one it could be - better ask the mozilla developers) you're lost.
So do yourself a favor, kill the firefox cache and backup the entire directory.

I don't know why you're reinstalling...
But I don't think you're doing it only because of firefox, or am I wrong?

At least for me I only reinstall if hardware fucks up (the harddrive...). Somehow I don't manage to break my system so much that reinstallation is needed to fix it. So I do a reinstallation maybe every 3 years (if i'm lucky and the hardware is stable).

Im just formatting everything, its been a good.. year and a half since I last did it, and I wana clean it up. I have everything else backed up, its only firefox thats keeping me from destroying windows. So, copy the whole mozilla/firefox folder then, and get rid of the cache. To be on the safe side, I'll copy the whole firefox folder in program files as well.

You really just need to backup your profile folder, and when you re-install Windows, just copy and paste the folder to the new proflies folder, and change the path in %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\proflies.ini to match the correct profile folder name.

This will keep all your settings including Extensions, Themes, and passwords.
