USB thumb drives

They kick ass. I need to get one. Which ones are good? I don't know too much about them, I did a quick search and found this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820214014

Very cheap, eh? Is that what I'm looking for? "flash" drive? Or should I get a "hard drive" one, not sure if that even exists but I know when it comes to mp3 players the hard drive ones are better.

Thanks.

I have a usb hard drive, it is 80 times the size for 2.5 times the price of the one you got. But, flash drives are smaller. Don't make the same mistake as the stupid person in the customer reviews (in your link) who lost a half year's research because it stopped working.
Only use those things to transport data, not permanently store.

Word, I won't use it to permanently store. I found this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211225

It seems the best from what I've seen at newegg. It's a great price. 5 stars out of 150 reviews. Lifetime warranty.

Only thing I need to see is its specs, not just its [obvious] capacity but its speeds. It claims "The A-DATA PD2 is a removable flash disk with USB 2.0 “High Speed” standard connection." but I don't know what a standard high speed is.

edit:

I'm most likely going to get this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233008

It has 5 stars out of 213 reviews. It has a much faster speed than the previous. Corsair is a brand I actually know, I've bought RAM from them before. And the price is pretty good.

You can buy one from office max or compusa for under 30 dollars. Buy store brand, the quality is fine.

I think 'high speed' USB runs 480megabits/s. COrrect me if I'm wrong though.

Double Post:
from wikipedia:
Transfer speed

USB supports three data rates.

* A Low Speed rate of 1.5 Mbit/s (183 KiB/s) that is mostly used for Human Interface Devices (HID) such as keyboards, mice and joysticks.
* A Full Speed rate of 12 Mbit/s (1.4 MiB/s). Full Speed was the fastest rate before the USB 2.0 specification and many devices fall back to Full Speed. Full Speed devices divide the USB bandwidth between them in a first-come first-served basis and it is not uncommon to run out of bandwidth with several isochronous devices. All USB Hubs support Full Speed.
* A Hi-Speed rate of 480 Mbit/s (57 MiB/s).

Those thumb drives are fantastic. I bought one three years ago and it's still working even after having been through the washing machine twice. I use mine both as a way to transport data and to backup files. It's really come in handy for me when a professor says I didn't hand something in and I can pop the drive into their computer, show that the file was created before the assignment was due, and hand it in all right there.

I'd also suggest on getting a flash drive over a harddrive based one since there're much much more durable and odds are you won't need to keep more than 1GB on data on the run with you.

Depends, I like to carry about 4 gigs with me (dave matthews of course). By the end of this summer, I'll have over 20 gigs to carry :)

If you're carrying music around you as might as well get a music player.

But if you want something that's more dedicated to work, low-priced, extremely durable, and as small as drives get then a thumb drive is probably the best bet.

Ya, as cheap as those gig sticks are getting, there is almost no reason to get them. Before you know it, we'll be carrying an entire computer that size. Plug it into our glasses, etc. This world is freakin' crazy!
