What is your favourite classic game?
I personally enjoy the Space/King's quest series by Sierra - and I've got a fondness for the XCOM games. For the 'quest series games, I really enjoyed the massive sizes of the games, and the vast possibilities. Pretty much everything you typed into the simple one-line entry had a unique response, from swearing, to the classic teenager 'take off your clothes'
My favourite classic game of all time though? Probably space quest 3, out of all of them, I found it had the most enjoyable storyline, and by far was the most fun to play! So - what is your favourite classic game? And don't just make a single word, or two word name of a game, give a little description about why you like it. (COMMANDER KEEN KICKS ASS!) |

Variations. There's Strange, Big, Crazy, and Arcade. Each of which have 31 different mazes which open up for a large amount of replayability. 2 player mode is fun too; a 2 player cooperation game. Instead of killing eachother, you're actually helping eachother against the ghosts. As an alternative, a large portion of NES games can be inserted here. It really depends on what you consider "classic" and from what year onwards they're considered not classic. |
Sam & Max Hit the Road (PC) - the best LucasArts game ever and the first CD-rom I ever got. Gotta love it.
Max: "This place reeks of adventure and excitement, Sam!" Sam: "I thought that was this tuna fish sandwich I found crawling with life in my coat pocket." "Well, it all started the day before today. I remember it just like it was yesturday." --Moleman from Sam & Max Hit The Road Sam: "Where should I put this thing so that it doesn't hurt anyone we know or care about?" Max:"Out the window, Sam. There's nobody but strangers out there." http://www.armory.com/~grafter/samquote.html |

The variations of which you speak were from the console versions. And as for favourite classic game (well aside from Ms. Pac-Man which is my #1), I have to say Galaga. Oh sweet Galaga. What I would do you have one of your in my possession. |

There were a lot of games I played growing up, PC and console, so to choose one from before the last 10 or 15 years (which is when I'd start considering games to be "classic") is tough. Rise of the Triad was probably the one though. |

For the NES. The first video game I ever played by myself. I always died within the first 12 levels, mind you, I was only 4 at the time, I had yet to develop the hand eye coordination required to properly use a controller. |

I'm going to mention Bubble Bobble before anyone else. 100 levels of PURE INSANE action. Even if I played this at the arcade it wouldn't be possible to complete, as there's levels(in the 90-100 period) which require you to kill ghosts trapped inside of boxes, with lightning bubbles. I was never able to complete Bubble Bobble without using saved states, and for some reason everyone keeps saying that the game was easy. |
Tie, between Z, and OMF 2097.
Z was just this really fun strategy game, that required a lot of precision, quick thinking, and had this really tough AI. It also had the most hilarious cut scenes. OMF 2097 was, and remains the best fighting game solely for PC. It has fatalities, air combos, and a fantastic Tournament mode where you build up your fighter. It is pretty old now, so it also happens to be FREE! |
They made a sequel to One Must Fall, but I don't think anyone bought it. Fighting games no longer have the great sense of creativity or cleverness to me (which explains why the most recent fighting games I've bought are Soul Calibur III and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max).
|
It's gotta be DigDug. I could play that thing for hours. Digging! Running! Puffing air into snakes until they explode! Truly a timeless classic.
Other than that, I'd have to say the old arcade The Simpsons machine, where you have to rescue Maggie from Mr. Burns. I used to go on a ferry boat that had that machine. I must have put a few hundred dollars into it over the years. |

http://www.dilligas.com/gamingpics/startropics.jpg My favorite classic game :) But perhaps not classic enough because its a 1990 game. |

In my case, it's Knightmare (MSX). A really fun (and though) game from Konami. I could never finished that damn game ¬_¬... http://es.geocities.com/knightmaresa...are/Enemy1.gif |
I remember playing tubin' countless times at my nickel arcade. lol. Fun times.
Police quest was also fun, sometimes frustrating, but rewarding. There's this one game I can't remember, in the arcades... played it probably 15 years ago. Maybe you guys can help, it's three players side scrolling game. very very similar to double dragon, with the non-shirted heroes. The 3 players/heroes are distinguished by red, blue, and yellow pants. But i can't be sure if those were the colors, but im pretty sure. And I kept thinking it was called "pit fighter" but that's a totally different game where it's photographic like mortal combat and not really sidescrolling action. MAN..... what is that game! |
The Revenge of Shinobi always will hold a specil place in my heart (especially since I couldn't get past level seven until I used an emulator, on Easy!). The game has a certain atmosphere that no other ninja game I've played since can replicate (plus the music is badass as well).
|
Mega Man 2 for me. I dunno, it's just one of those really memorable games for me for some reason. Perhaps partly because I think that was the game that planted the seed in me for a liking to video game music. Without which, I probably never would have come to appreciate some fantastic music (even if it's 8-bit :D ) and composers, or find this forum. That and it's just a fun game.
|
I only beat it recently, but Castlevania 3 is easily one of the best classic games I've ever played. The music is aweosme (at least in the Famicom version), it's challenging, and the boss battles are great. There's something charming about the classic CVs in general, mostly how your character is so weak, and there's no air control at all (meaning the medusa heads are hell.) Really, it just defines what a good 8-Bit Platformer should be.
|
Someone mentioned Star Tropics, that too was mine. I loved that game so much and even though I always died at the last boss...I kept on playing it. Then there was a sequal, and when I got it and played it...I cried because it was stupid.
|
Galaga is the best classic game, well, for me, at least. It has immense replay value and is so much fun. I've never even heard of anyone reaching the end of the game without using the glitch that makes the whole thing quite easier.
|
Streets of Rage 1 and 2. I consider these games to be true classics, as they were one of the first video games I ever had the privilege to play. I fell in love with the music and the gameplay, and I haven't played another game that has brought me quite as much joy as these two beauties did (although Sonic 2 comes pretty close).
|
Classic game? Then Tetris all the way ^______^
Pacman is cool too but all those dots hurt my eyes after playing it for too long. As for the 80-90s game, I would vote for Leisure Suit Larry and Monkey Island.... these two are my fav PC classic game~~ Unfortunatly, these games are mostly run on MS-DOS and my computer fails running those :( |

 And thanks for reminding me about Trog. I need to go play that RIGHT NOW. |
Sam and Max and Day Of The Tentacle. Damn i miss those games so much. Shame they probably won't work on my PC now. I just remember them being so addictive and Sam and Max was the funniest thing ever. I remember watching my Dad play Day Of the Tentacle and being completely in awe of it. *Sigh* oh how i miss them

Bionic Commando is a game with fantastic gameplay and level design. The level design, especially, is marvelous, because shifting one object (during the creation process) could completely change the situation. Plus:
http://www.elitecoder.com/bionic/hecknerd.gif Oh yeah, and it had Hitler. Is that even allowed in games nowadays? |
One of my old favorites was simply ROTT. I mean, it had a plethora of weapons and.. a shrooms mode. Yay for drugs on videogames!
And also Jazz the Jackrabbit. Quite snazzy bunny who kicks a lot of butt. A fun sidescroller which attracted my attention. Though simple, it was very, very enjoyable. |

Monkey Island. What can I say, it was a great adventure game. The humor, the puzzles, the branching dialogue system... All of these things made it cool. The insult-based swordplay was one of the greatest things ever. "You fight like a dairy farmer!" "How fitting, you fight like a cow!"
|
When are PSX games going to be classic? It seems right now the line is drawn at 16bit games as the newest classic games (it's been that way for a while now).
|
Super Metroid and Gunstar Heroes take the crown for favorite classics. I also have a soft spot for Duck Tales, Terranigma and Mega Man X. I have played those games altogether 150 to 200 times.

. . . Anyway, and I can't believe I forgot this, my favorite PC game of ALL TIME: http://adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/advert.gif It had the first level editor I ever used, and was the simplest and most versatile ones I ever played with. Gameplay was simple, mostly platforming, But the levels you could create were limited by your imagination only. The original 100 levels could be made using the editor, which dosen't make them any more unique than a single custom level made by yourself. It's what got me appreciating level design for the first time. I must've made like 12,000 levels with this; some series, most standalone. It was fantastic. http://adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/game1.gif Now the game is Freeware (YES!!!) but it won't work on my PC (slits wrists) |

I remember Jetpack, I have a disc with about 300 demos on it. They all run in DOS, so compatibility is spotty. |
Also mistakenly left out SkyBlazer and Super Castlevania IV. Now those were two underappreciated titles. Yes, even CIV.

NES
Good old SMB 1 &3 I hated 2.. ;_; Just because it was the first game I ever played, and because it's so simple anyone can begin to play it. Duckhunt yay!! :TPG: It's just was pretty cool to have that red gun and blow up those poor duckies :D Legend Of Zelda Hey what can one say it's my first RPG-like game and I was hooked instantly. SNES Chrono Trigger One of the best if not the best Rpg for the snes, i've played this so many times and it still is great. FF6 My first FF and probable the best if I didn't like ff7 a bit more, but still very very good. Secret of Mana First 16bit rpg I played and it still goes strong even after all those years, I liked it's style and the music was really great. PC Jazz Jackrabbit Hehe way cool platformer for the pc back in the day, wished there was a xp-compatible version of this game it was fun. Duke3d Most people will go for Doom but I'd rather "Chew bubblegum and kick some ass, and I'm all out of chewin' gum" :tpg: Anything adventure from Sierra Hey those were some of the best adventures of the 90's I just can't choose one from them they were almost all pretty good. Don't know if we can call PSX really classic yet... Otherwise i'd have to call for FF7, how cliche it may be. :P |
Mortal Kombat II, The day i learned Reptiles fatality where he eats your head...I was addicted. Raiden I & II is another classic of mine. I will never forget beating it in arcades and I had a grp of people around me cheering me on...another fond arcade moment as well.
|
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is the game I consider to be the best ever, not just a classic game.
Quite simply, it's quest feels more epic than any other game, and it's world is so full of secrets and things to do that it's somewhat overwhelming at first. I found it hard to like the original Zelda, since it just kind of threw you into the world and you wandered around from there, and it looked so barren compared to games like Mario and even Crystalis, a Zelda knockoff (Possibly my favorite NES game as well.) It's probably nostalgia talking, however. |
Well there's really too many games to list... But heres a few.
Little Big Adventure - Because it was my first PC game. I had seen another person playing it before and was in awe of it at the time. Then got my first PC and this was the first game I played on it. It wasn't the easiest game for my first time on a keyboard game because it starts off with you trying to break out of prison with plenty of guards to keep throwing you back in your cell. I loved the world and its creatures, the music was fantastic. Quality FMV games such as Black Dahlia and Gabriel Knight 2 were interesting. But the Tex Murphy series is my favourite by far. Mainly because of the amiable flawed main character with alot of wit and resourcefullness. The world again was fascinating and atmospheric. I highly reccomend these games if you haven't already tried them. The Pandora Directive is said to be the better of the series. Check out this website too: http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com/ Many Adventure games e.g. most of Sierra's line... I miss those days (Monkey Island series, Space Quest series, Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist, Sam and Max, Leisure Suit Larry etc.) As Echolyn said, if Final Fantasy 7 can be counted I would also highlight that one too. It was the first game I played on the Playstation and I guess I don't need to go into how much I enjoyed it since its obviously talked about enough already. |
For my favourite classic PC game I'll have to agree with Rin; Little Big Adventure was just awesome! I loved that game so much! The world was so immersive and the music was beautiful. It gave me a REAL sense of adventure. Brilliant.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/Mantoid/LBA.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/Mantoid/lba9.jpg Oh and for the Megadrive (Genesis), I think my favourite was Soliel (known as Crusader of Centy in the US!). This game was pretty much a Zelda rip-off I think, but, it was just, sooo nice! A really lovely world with a cute graphical style that kept me hooked. And I played it over and over again! It had some really nice tunes too. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...Centy_U_02.png Oh yeah, and sonic the Hedgehog makes an appearance! Wheeey! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b44/Mantoid/sol.png Speaking of Sonic, I think that's one of my favourite classic games. Argh, there's just, too many to choose from!! |
X-Com: UFO Defense
Streets of Rage 2 Powerball They're all #1 in my book, in different ways... X-Com is the best if you have like an entire week (or month) to dedicate to gaming, Streets of Rage 2 is the best if you have a whole afternoon/night, and Powerball is the best if you have 30 minutes or less. |
anyone remember Lemmings for the PC? I loved that game. haven't played it in about 10 years, but I always enjoyed that one.
other good ol' favourites include The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy I, and ofcourse the original Mario Brothers all on the NES. I'd have to say Final Fantasy III for the SNES is my all time favourite though. don't give me that it's Final Fantasy VI shit either, it says FINAL FANTASY III on the label and I'm sticking to it. =p |
Super Metroid. Few games have EVER STARTED to ooze atmosphere quite like this game. Everything about it was perfect; the intro was superbly chilling, the storytelling in a game without narration was perfect, the fact that every room had something different from the last gave you a feeling that is hard to explain, and the creatures were interesting and often awe inspiring, and the soundtrack is among the best in games. No game has ever felt as "right" as Super Metroid, and it remains to this day my favorite game of all time.
