Nintendo just pulled a fast one on us. At an after-hours press briefing a mere minute ago, the company pulled another ace out of its sleeve: Smash Bros. Brawl -- the next installment in Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series.

Details are just now rolling in, but we have confirmed the following playable characters:

# Pit (Kid Icarus)
# Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
# Zero Suit Samus (Metroid)
# Meta-Knight (Kirby)

More as it breaks.
Now that's what I call a fast one. This almost sounds like some kind of funky rumor, but IGN posted it and it's in their top article bar, so it must be legit.

...Solid Snake eh? :eyebrow:

SketchTheArtist May 10, 2006 09:07 PM

Beat me to it!

It's also on Kotaku.com.

Sin Ansem May 10, 2006 09:07 PM

WTF, son.

I think this is revenge for Sony "ripping off" their controller.

cubed May 10, 2006 09:09 PM

Damn you beat me.. :P

anyway since my thread is gonna be closed in a few, here's my comments:

.............. Snake ?????? What the fuck is he doing here ?? Pit is a big surprise though I always said he would be a good character from Nintendo to be thrown in the melee. Lolo & Lala (as Ice Climbers clone) would be nice.

Anyway, I hope it's gonna be released not too late after the Wii launch.

Black Mage May 10, 2006 09:11 PM

Solid Snake? What the?

vuigun May 10, 2006 09:13 PM

Well, I guess if Snake can get in then there's still hope for Disney Characters to be added.

Raven Symone Vs. Donkey Kong

Hilary Duff Vs. Princess Peach

Mary Poppins Vs. Giga Bowser

Soldier May 10, 2006 09:13 PM

Why don't we just toss Cloud in there. Makes about as much sense as Snake.

Or at least Captain N. Pause button like what.

Darkcomet72 May 10, 2006 09:13 PM

WTF

Actually, "Brawl" works.

EDIT: You left out WARIO.

THE POWER OF WATER May 10, 2006 09:17 PM

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/su...g-solid-snake/ for pictures, including Wario, as DC72 mentioned.

Best item ever.

Soldier May 10, 2006 09:19 PM

Oh, God. Kojima, how could you? Even Square would never....well actually they might.

But hey, looks like the game gets a story mode now. I don't need to emphasize how awesome that is.

Chaotic May 10, 2006 09:19 PM

Wario and Meta-Knight should be interesting... I think I have another character I want to work on... :)

But i'll have to agree with everyone else... WTF... Solid Snake?

cubed May 10, 2006 09:19 PM

Wario has just been added like seconds ago. But Snake is still there..... Bad IGN tell me you're wrong.

Wall Feces May 10, 2006 09:20 PM

Thank god it's not using the Wiimote. I could NOT see how that thing could control with it, and luckily, neither could they. Full compatibility with the GC controller. EXCELLENT!!

SketchTheArtist May 10, 2006 09:21 PM

That's probably one of the most 'Surprising' new yet!

Double Post:
Online Multiplayer!? I'm there!

Motsy May 10, 2006 09:22 PM

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

Also, Kid Icarus, Wario, Samus (sans suit), MetaKnight, and SOLID FUCKING SNAKE.

Darkcomet72 May 10, 2006 09:23 PM

I assume Solid Snake fights inside the box the whole time.

cubed May 10, 2006 09:23 PM

yeah someone post that same link up there.

evergreen May 10, 2006 09:35 PM

If this comes out 2007, it'll be the Year of the Snake.

Kairyu May 10, 2006 09:37 PM

Hey, Meta-Knight is in it? Looks like someone in nintendo was listening to the fans. The Wii just went from nice to awesome in a span of 48 hours :tpg:.

Oh yeah, how did Snake sneak in this game?

The Box.

Free.User May 10, 2006 09:40 PM

I just creamed my pants.

Fuck opinion. Nintendo is IT, they've stolen the motherfucking show. Anybody who disagrees is wrong.

Motsy May 10, 2006 09:41 PM

Seriously, Nintendo wiins E3.

Kaleb.G May 10, 2006 09:45 PM

Snake debuted on the NES. He has Nintendo history.

Sarmoti May 10, 2006 09:46 PM

What is with everyone in being against Snake? I think it's awesome that Nintendo is seeking cross-licenses. I'd be happy seeing just about any non-Nintendo character (even Sephiroth).

Motsy May 10, 2006 09:47 PM

MSX.

Why not? The FFVII fans will buy it just to play as him, and the haters (me) will buy it to beat the shit out of him.

Edit:
Quote:

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can do so using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to while the new motion control adds a new dimension previously not available in fighting games.

The game also features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link have been confirmed as returning characters. Sakurai confirmed that Wario actually has a fart attack and that Solid Snake can use his trusty cardboard box. In the video trailer, Snake gets out of the box and says "It's showtime!"

Sakurai said the decision to include Solid Snake when Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include the Metal Gear character in the last Smash Bros. game. When asked about the possibility of Sonic the Hedgehod appearing in the game as well, Shigeru Miyamoto said: "There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."

Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode.

The bad news is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a Wii launch title, but will instead be released in 2007.
