Battlestar Galactica

Season three of Battlestar Galactica aired tonight with a 2 hour premier on Scifi.

Episode 301 - OCCUPATION / PRECIPICE

Your thoughts on tonights episode or the series...

Sousuke Oct 7, 2006 09:02 AM

Good GODS.

I just watched the premiere for S3... and wow, they're still not letting down with the plot twists and cliffhanger endings. I love it. :D This premiere surely didn't disappoint.

...But... holy fuck, did Lee Adama ever get FAT. I'm hoping that's just his character, and not actually Jamie Bamber. Heh.

Secret Squirrel Oct 7, 2006 10:47 AM

He was at Gen-con this summer, and looked fine, so I don't think he gained too much weight. They did use some clever tricks to make him look fat, like that one scene where he's slouching there with his belly sticking out, and the other scene where he's stuffing his face.

tagged for canadia:
I couldn't help but lol at Lee for a bit. When he was introduced changing in the locker room, I was like, "wait a minute..." Then his daddy called him a fatty and my lol was confirmed. I never liked the character of Lee, and actually hoped he died last season or something (but that's not ever gonna happen). Maybe he'll be an entertaining fat guy this time around.

But yeah: the twists this season: oh wow. Four months of occupations, cylon babies, and holy shit at that end... I look forward. :p

Edit: added spoiler tags for Canadia.

Hmmm, sounds like its going to be good. Its on tonight in Canada... so don't say too much until after tonight. ;) I will let you know what I thought of it. :D

Certainly interesting. Using suicide bombers is certainly a controversial move and I can see there being some massive repurcussions when things go "back to normal". I wonder when James Bamber'll take off all that fat make-up (or has he really been eating Burger King for the past 6 months?) They better not kill off Zarek. I'd quite like to see him as Roslin's Vice. I wonder if anyone'll forgive Jammer. Sure he's sold his soul, but perhaps letting Cally go'll redeem him somewhat.

Also, I'm glad that Baltar hasn't gone and completly sold out. He really doens't want to do what he's doing as shown by his reluctance to sign the death warrants. How on Earth he's gonna not get hung, drawn and quartered once this is all done and dusted I don't know.

Another thing, this is the first time I've thought that Ellen does actually love Saul. Sure she's frakking good ol' Father Ted the Cylon, but she genuinely does what she does for Saul.

Finally, I really hope that this kid of Leoben's and Starbucks comes to nothing. It's my only quibble so far and it's quite a big one. Having Hera's fine, but let's not have another one, 'k? Starbuck goes off on one enough as it is, without having to look after a Brevelle thank you very much.

Musharraf Oct 7, 2006 04:37 PM

Watched the first 45 minutes and I must say it's quite a nice opener. Quite brutal and definitely PG-13 at the least, but I liked it very much. The first ten minutes were the best, the rest was so-so. However, I'm really looking forward to how things will develop.

Pretty weak that Baltar didn't want to get executed, though. And I dunno but I think Lee pretty much rocks now that he's kinda, well, fat.

Sadly, for those who saw the preview that Sci-Fi showed of coming episodes:
Spoiler:
Fat-Suit Apollo goes back to normal weight and Adama shaves off his Adamustache at some point. :(

It was a good episode overall, although I don't care for Starbuck's kid. I'm betting the Cylon guy came back and pushed the kid down the stairs in order to force her maternal instincts to kick in. When she finds that out she'll have no problem ditching them both.

Tellurian Oct 8, 2006 03:22 AM

BSG is getting better and better.
After the best (or "worst" in terms of wanting to know what happens next) cliffhanger ending in history, they come up with this.
Damn! So great. I love it how the series actually dares to treat its characters really, really roughly...
Can't wait for next week...

Majin yami Oct 8, 2006 04:27 AM

Thank God that Adama's gonna get rid of the 'tasche. It's ridiculous. As for Lee going back to normal weight, goooooood. That fat suit must be getting on his tits.

Musharraf Oct 8, 2006 05:21 AM

Well I dunno but I like him being fat. Oh well. I watched the second half and I must say that I'm pretty impressed. The mood has become much more darker and everything has become much more brutal, but that's not bad.

nuttyturnip Oct 8, 2006 07:58 AM

I enjoyed the episode overall, but I was annoyed at how thick the writers were laying on parallels to the current situation in Iraq:

-Suicide bombers
-Cylons believing that their invasion was to "help" the humans
-Recruiting humans into a Cylon police force, then the humans blowing them up

It's not the first time writers have tried to comment on current events, but could they make it a little less obvious?

killmoms Oct 8, 2006 08:24 AM

I actually like the "Starbuck has a half-Cylon baby" thing actually. Here's why: the writers have set up the two different half-human, half-Cylon babies to create conflict later on. Think about it. Sharon's half-Cylon kid was conceived out of love, whereas Starbuck's half-Cylon kid was created in the baby farms. With one of each "method" being successful, this sets up for more conflict within the Cylon ranks about how they should proceed with humanity.

Definitely psyched for the rest of this season though. Looks like it'll be another excellent one. Well, just so long as we don't have another musical flop like the Pegasus theme from season 2. Ugh, I wanted to punch Bear McCreary in the face for that auditory atrocity.

Majin yami Oct 8, 2006 09:06 AM

Nah, Hera's fine, but this new sporg is gonna annoy me. I can see why the whole conflict aspect would appeal, but seriously, there's enough of that as there is. Especially when we get back to Galactica. Saul's actions on New Caprica'll have repurcussions for a long time to come.

Oh, and I liked the Pegasus theme...

Wow. You're the first I've heard of. Like... it was so completely inappropriate for the scene. It's supposed to be tense but happy, but instead you've got what sounds like fucking softcore porn music going on in the background. After like a minute of that shit my friends and I (who were watching avidly because we fucking love the show) just started laughing, looking at each other and going "WTF?" I dunno, to each their own I guess. But you're the first person I've heard who said they liked it.

Majin yami Oct 9, 2006 02:58 PM

Seriously, I hardly even noticed it first time around. Got the soundtrack and on the first way through I though "Hey, I remember that track. It was nice and happy". Turns out it was Pegasus.

Tellurian Oct 10, 2006 01:50 PM

Holy fuck, take a look at what's going on at the official BSG forums! :o

Seems some more conservative members of the US Armed Forces slowly begin to "dislike" the show for "pro raghead propaganda".

Majin yami Oct 10, 2006 03:15 PM

To be expected. There was no way in hell this was gonna go down well with some of the more Conservative members of the public.

Tellurian Oct 10, 2006 03:18 PM

Hopefully they won't be able to stir up enough of a ruckus to bring the series down for being "un-american" or something...
Or by just pushing the quota down enough so it gets cancelled... >_>

galen Oct 11, 2006 07:54 PM

Once again, it's really easy to draw parallels to current events where there might not be as many as it seems. Just because they have "suicide bombers" doesn't instantly mean this is a commentary on the current situation in Iraq. As Roslin said - they're desperate people.

Majin yami Oct 12, 2006 01:20 AM

I think the use of suicide bombers is 'fair' for the predicament they're in. Saul said himself that a suicide mission's a suicide mission, whether they be in planes or with bombs on their back. Seeing as how they lack planes, bombs are the only thing they've got.

Tellurian Oct 12, 2006 04:06 AM

Plus people seem to forget that the general use of suicide bombing isn't NEW to the series. The Cylons were using suicide bombers in season 1.
Okay, it seems the beef the GIs seem to have is that they feel "forced" to "sympathise" with the bombers and thus smell pro-raghead propaganda...
*sigh*

Musharraf Oct 17, 2006 05:13 AM

Holy crap, the first three episodes of season three were freaking amazing. Even better than LOST. I totally dig the atmosphere and how things are finally getting exciting. Definitely looking forward to this weeks episode.

RPG Maker Oct 20, 2006 10:20 PM

Tonights episode was amazing!!! Hope everyone else watched.

Jujubee Oct 21, 2006 01:27 AM

OMG I love this show. It definitely is the best thing on TV IMHO. Battlestar Galactica is like the Xenogears/Xenosaga of modern television, seriously. I definitely need to get the OST as soon as I can find it. Anyone have it on FTP or Torrent?

Quick survey, what's everyone's favorite character? Mine's is definitely Adama. Mostly because of his father-like character and military genius.

Spoiler:
I almost choked when I thought Galactica was going to explode today. If they kill Adama I'd be uber pissed, but I knew they wouldn't have the balls to not just kill him but destroy the ship as well. Still, the script and scenario for this series is just amazing. I don't remember any show ever being this good, outside of animation.

Was anyone around for the original Battlestar Galatica? lol
