Song of the Week - Qualification: Tallon Overworld

PLEASE ONLY VOTE IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN SONG OF THE WEEK

This is a poll on official policy, so I'd appreciate it if only people who vote and/or nominate vote on this matter. If I don't recognize your name, I won't count your vote with the final tally. Thanks in advance. :)

Tallon Overworld
nominator: Opfer

This track is from Metroid Prime. It does not contain any themes written for previous games in the Metroid series; it is an original composition for Metroid Prime, and so should be evaluated based just on the obscurity of the game it comes from. Do you think it should be eligible for SotW voting?

See here for previous discussion, and populate this thread with further discussion. I'm going with a closing time of five days for this one because I don't think we've ever actually needed a full week for any of these polls.

My biggest question in all of this: Is anything from Metroid out? Gameboy Metroids? Metroid Prime 3 (a game I haven't played yet or heard the soundtrack)?

I think this is a small enough series that a ban on Metroid Prime is a ban on all things Metroid.

Fuck, delete my vote. It was retarded of me to vote without reading the first post first.

I used to participate in Song of the Week when I had time a long time ago, but sadly, I don't anymore.

But, uh, since I'm posting, I might as well throw in my $0.02, even though I won't have the time to participate. I think the track should be allowed since it's a brand new composition for Metroid Prime. If it was a rehash of the original Brinstar theme or whatever, then it would be different. But since it's new...I think it's acceptable.

I'd say Metroid and Super Metroid are out, and Prime is probably next most popular in the series. I think even if this is a no, stuff from Metroid Prime Pinball would still be eligible, and maybe a couple other games (Metroid Prime hunters, Metroid 2), and something from Metroid Fusion was even in before, though that was a long time ago.

I'm voting no - it's freakin' Metroid. One of Nintendo's flagship series. What more do you want?

surasshu Mar 24, 2008 10:00 AM

I'm biased cause of the awesomeness of the soundtrack, but I want to say yes here. Like I said before I don't think MP is really appreciated all that much for its music.

orion_mk3 Mar 24, 2008 12:22 PM

I said no. It's a high-profile entry in a flagship series, and the soundtrack is well-known enough to have done well in the BSC. I wouldn't make a blanket statement against the series--there are some poorly-known and obscure entries. But Prime ain't.

Ceft Mar 24, 2008 01:16 PM

No, because MP is a well known title and the soundtrack is even more well known.

I nominated this track because I feel that while the game is well known, it's soundtrack isn't. I don't know how many of you have listened to the soundtrack outside of the game, but I didn't think it would be that common of a thing to do, considering the mostly ambient nature of the soundtrack.

I think you mean the track "Planet Tallon IV", "Tallon Overworld" isn't heard until about halfway through the game.

TheKnightOfNee Mar 24, 2008 04:36 PM

As much as I love the song, and the soundtrack, I think I'm gonna vote no. The soundtrack does receive a fair amount of love and attention, and I don't think it would be introducing enough people in SOTW to something new and unfamiliar.

I would still be open to music from some other Metroid games though, so this is not a blanket "no" for the series.

Kaleb.G Mar 24, 2008 05:14 PM

FYI, guys, "Planet Tallon IV" is the Brinstar-motif track that plays when you first land on Tallon IV. "Tallon Overworld" plays later in the the game and is a wholly original track. EDIT: Opfer beat me to it.

Nevertheless, I feel this soundtrack is too well known. There's nothing underdog about it. Metroid Prime 2 or 3, perhaps, as they never got soundtrack releases -- but not this one.

I voted No. (Herrkotowski from STC, btw). Metroid Prime is a popular game and this is probably the most popular of the soundtracks given it actually had an official release.

Opfer Mar 31, 2008 06:22 AM

Oh well, guess it's more well-known than I thought. Gonna look for something really obscure next time ;).
