Languages you want study

Hi, since there is lot of people in GFF, I want to know the languages you want study and what do you do to achieve that.

Let's start from me... currently I'm studying japanese in a Japanese Language Culture Centre (Shokyu 2)... currently I pend my exam date because I'm chickened out by the amount of vocabulary I must memorize. The next one is German, studied it two years ago, but currently I dont continue it, maybe in future I will take course to master it.

other languages I want to study are French, Hebrew, Turkish, and Chinese Mandarin. I wonder how to study hebrew language... it's just too damn hard, yet very2 interesting.

allright that's from me, what's yours?

Son of Wiseness Mar 7, 2006 06:55 AM

I'm part Mexican, so I'd like to study Spanish.

I studied Italian in highschool and I really enjoyed it (the language, the culture, and OMG the FOOD ^o^ ) So I would definitely like to further my Italian studies ^___^

Aside from that, I would love to learn Japanese (same reasons, love the language, the culture, and the food ^^; - a trend is emerging, no? :p .... Also, I would like to be able to read manga in Japanese... it's cheaper to buy that way too ;) )

I think Latin would be cool to learn lol.

Yeah, actually Latin would be a good language to learn too ^___^ It's be especially useful for Medicine, where alot of terminology is derived directly from Latin ;) . It's also just interesting knowing the origins of alot of words in everyday speech too

I also want to learn Latin. I actually tried learning it on my own but it got too confusing when I got to the declensions. Maybe I'll find a course in college or someone who can teach me one day.

I want to learn Chinese Mandarin and Korean. I am planning to get a tutor for Mandarin in the next while.

i'm currently learning japanese along with my degree at university, and next year i hope to continue it and take another language as well, either german or mandarin which i've learnt before but is kinda back to basic levels since i don't have a single chance of practising it and back then german was compulsory so i considered it a chore. also want to learn korean at some point and cantonese written chinese (i can already speak) since at my chinese school we get taught the formal version and it annoys me when i can't read what other cantonese kids are typing because i don't know the characters.

latin isn't just useful for medicine, it makes learning any language that is latin based a lot easier, and can help you deduce the meanings of words you've never seen before because you know the latin root. it's also fun to be able to see a word and guess it's original latin form and conjugate it, or that's just me ^^;; (latin was compulsory at my school for 3 years)

I would like to learn all the romantic languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian) - these languages are easy to learn and sound delicious.

I wanted to learn Latin back in high school, since our school used to offer it, but lacking a teacher they cancelled the program.

At the moment I really want to learn Norwegian and Japanese...Norwegian looks more feasable right now, simply because it's closer to English than Japanese is. It's mostly because my favorite forms of entertainment involve those languages; I listen to quite a bit of my music in Norwegian, and a lot of the manga series I love are not licensed and probably never will be. Not to mention there's a lot of novel series that are in Japan that have a snowball's chance in hell of getting translated and brought over, and I'd like to read them.

So far, I've studied Spanish, Japanese, and ASL (though I'm far from fluent in any of them).

I'd love to study Korean, since East Asian Languages interest me (though Chinese intimidates me more). French and German interest me as well. If I ever got that far, I'd like to throw in Swahili or Yoruba for that dash of something exotic.

I realize that unless to choose some specific career choices, being a polyglot's rather useless. However, I find the good ol'-fashioned "persuit of knowledge" entertaining. =P

fgamer Mar 7, 2006 10:44 AM

Korean because I already know chinese and japanese; that's the only language I have to learn before I can go to all 3 big east asian countries without any problem of communication.

I'm Khmer and i'd like to learn some Chinese, Japanese, perhaps learning to write Khmer because i was born in France...

DeLorean Mar 7, 2006 11:42 AM

I 2nd the latin thing, that would be bad ass.

Matt Mar 7, 2006 11:46 AM

I want to continue my studies in Spanish and become fluent in it. To do this I suppose I would need to spend time in either Mexico (n get shot lol) or Spain though.

I also wouldn't mind learning Japanese. Not because I enjoy anime and videogames, mind you.
Rather, I'm pleasantly obsessed with Haruki Murakami and want to read his newest novels without waiting years for the translation.

ComCrimson Mar 7, 2006 12:08 PM

I wouldn't mind learning some Dutch or German. Sadly i only know words from Rammstein songs because i can't be bothered to learn it. I also really want to learn Japanese because i think the language is absolutely gorgeous. I know the odd word and phrase but again, i probably won't learn it any time soon because i'm too lazy.

Eleo Mar 7, 2006 12:20 PM

Well I'd like to completely learn the languages I've already studied; Spanish and German. Honestly I'd like to learn pretty much any language I can; even obscure ones; but I don't think I have the brain power to keep up with so many languages.

I have a thirst for knowledge but my brain can drink enough knowledge at once :(

FLEX Mar 7, 2006 12:23 PM

French, Spanish and Japanese. Already know bits and pieces of German....just enough to find my way to the bathroom.

Eleo Mar 7, 2006 12:25 PM

My guess is that Germans know enough English to help you find your way to a bathroom.

German kids start learning English in grade school; most American students get a foreign language shoved down their throats in college if not high school.

FLEX Mar 7, 2006 12:35 PM

And I wish I had started learning these languages when I was younger. The older you get, the harder learning the stuff becomes.

octo Mar 7, 2006 02:16 PM

I am extremely interested in learning Japanese, but am not sure if I will ever get around to it unless I decide to take it in Uni.

xen0phobia Mar 7, 2006 02:29 PM

I'm currently taking Japanese and planning to study abroad in the coming years. If that works out and i get half-way fluent in Japanese i'd like to go to graduate school and take chinese. My major is computer information systems (Business) so chinese would be nice to know.

Blanka Mar 7, 2006 02:34 PM

I took Latin for a couple years, but haven't touched it in ages.
Right now I'd like to learn either German or Russian. =)

Latina melior quam tu est =o

Having studied Latin for about three years now (at school and on my own), I'd like to continue studying it, for one. Other than that, I'd like to study German one day (considering my heritage or somesuch) and French. (The latter mainly because it sounds hard. At least, it does to me.) Of course, that's what I come up with at this moment; I tend to desire to want to learn languages sporadically >_>
