Ahmadinejad's Acumen

Ahmadinejad questions 9/11, Holocaust - Yahoo! News

Remember now

Rule #1. The Holocaust never happened, "There's nothing known as absolute"
Rule #2. There are no gay people in Iran, and if there were, they would be punished dearly
Rule #3. Iran does not believe in razors

I've never really had a problem with Iran, never knew much about them actually. Now all I know is stupidity.

I thought his justification for refusing to reconise Israel was fantastic.

I had an entertaining time watching the interview at the university. At first, Ahmadinejad had a huge fake grin on his face, which gave way to a perpetual scowl as the questions began to get more difficult.

I also like how he says that Iran's nuclear future capabilities are now "off-limits" for discussion. The US and most other industrialized nations, would disagree.

Ahmadinejad did not deny the Holocoust.

No. Hard Pass. Sep 27, 2007 01:50 PM

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has described the Holocaust as "a myth" and suggested that Israel be moved to Europe, the United States, Canada or Alaska.

CNN.com - Iranian leader: Holocaust a 'myth' - Dec 14, 2005

Really?

This guy definitely sounds like an idiot. Its rather obvious that he doesn't have any control of Iran. He's just a puppet for the rest of the council. How could anyone actually suggest that the holocaust didn't happen :S Its actually humourous listening to the radio show hosts berating him.

He DID deny the holocaust. What he DIDN'T say was that Israel should be "wiped off the map" - most translators agree that instead he was just saying that they should have a more democratic form of government.

Mephisto Sep 27, 2007 03:19 PM

Ahmadinejad denied he had questioned the existence of the Holocaust.

"Granted this (the Holocoust) happened, what does it have to do with the Palestinian people?" he said.

I was talking about what he said at this speach, btw.

packrat Sep 27, 2007 08:47 PM

I read somewhere (mind you this is all second hand information that I'm trying to confirm still) that he used a Farsi loanword of the English word "myth;" which is unusual since Farsi speakers certainly have their own word for fictional events, or whatever you might initially think when you hear the word "myth."

The argument goes that when he was using the word "myth," he was using it in an anthropological sense. Not saying that it never happened, but that it had "mythical" status, and that it is being invoked religiously as justification for Israel's improprieties.

And Bush and Cheney denied they had ever tried to link Saddam to Al-Queda. Denying it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Politicians backtrack ALL the time.

Mephisto Sep 28, 2007 09:04 AM

Your logic is of course correct.

I was just saying that he didn't deny the Holocoust in this speach.

And what "Packrat" sais is of course interesting, and I belive him/her. Although I am of course not sure about it.

packrat Sep 28, 2007 11:40 AM

You should find a recording or a Farsi transcript of the speech, and then consult with someone "mature" in the language before you just outright believe me. (As I am doing right now :3 )

Mephisto Sep 28, 2007 11:50 AM

Maybe my english is to bad. Let me clarify. I said that I wasn't sure, but that I belived you.

The version you offered sounded like the most likely one, since I have listened to many interviews by Ahmadinejad (I don't like the man to much btw). But as I stated I don't take it as a fact.

Adamgian Sep 29, 2007 10:58 PM

I'm still disturbed by how grossly inappropriate Bollinger's attacks were. Ahmadinejad may not be the most desirable fellow, but as a guest and frankly, a world leader who was invited to speak, he deserved more respect than he got from the school. It was absolutely shameful; Columbia could have taken the moral highground but instead caved to a New York lobby that failed to understand the value in letting the man speak. Absolutely disgraceful.
