Use of Fonts in publications?

I've been writing a novel.
Since I doubt any publisher would pick it up (though it seems like danish publishers would publish any shit these days), I've been looking at self-publishing.
I've found a company who specialises in this stuff. However, one of their demands is that I've got the right to use the fonts.
Now, if I write my stuff in, say Arial or one of the fonts included in Windows, who's got the right? Can I use them, seeing as I've bought a licens of Windows? Or should I find a free "do the hell with it as you want"-font from the 'net?

I would have thought that the company specialising in these things would be able to tell you that yourself. I know you have to pay to use Helvetica commercially (On an album cover at any rate) so I imagine Microsoft would want some money for the use of Arial or whatever. Can you not just ask them for some specifics as one would hope that part of their service includes collecting royalties and covering legal issues like this, otherwise they're just a printing firm rather than a self-publishing firm.

And if you don't send your novel to a publisher, you'll never know if they might have published it. Don't ask don't get, mate.

Just write it out by hand, like a man.

If you're worried about copyrights, or do not wish to pay licensing fees, use one of the fonts from the Open Font Library.

Regarding the answer to your question, Microsoft Typography states that:

Until recently, most fonts that include a Microsoft copyright or trademark notice have only been available as part of Microsoft products. Although some fonts remain Microsoft-exclusive, a number of Microsoft fonts are now available to end users, ISVs and OEMs under license from Ascender Corporation. These include 'Verdana', 'Georgia', 'Comic Sans MS', 'Microsoft Sans Serif', 'Nina', 'Tahoma', 'Wingdings', 'Webdings' and 'Trebuchet MS'.

That's the most disgusting notion I've ever heard.

And Pang, I love you.
