Daily Art thread

I am bored, lets drawing something each day and post them here. I don't care if you think you are no good, it doesn't have to be good, just make a good use of a single page of paper/or digital canvas and post there here. We'll have a little chat on theme as we go, but just post whatever doodle you made "today". :3

Looking good there Magi. That 4/15 entry has some great action and looks very polished. What specifically are you doing different this time with regards to coloring? Do you usually do an underpainting?

Hmm, the image done in 4/15 is done using a basic cel-shading method. The latter image on the other hand, will be restricting the coloring to one layer and paint in a more directly, and yeah, there is no under painting for the 4/15.

Just a question (it might sound stupid)
Is scanning a sketch with a scanner better that taking a picture of a drawing?
Also the name of the thread reminded me of a artist's website this dude has some nice sketches..click here if your interested

Depends. It is generally true, but when it comes to large formate image or image that is done using special medium that sometimes rubs off(like charcoal or pastel) its probably better to take a picture of if. The advantage of scanning over photo is that: 1) It could potentially have much larger resolution, 2) it prevents POV warping that occurs while taking the picture, and you probably won't have too much difficult getting the image to focus when you are working in low light situations 3) depending on the scanner, it sometimes prevents the discoloration through different methods.

Hmm, I had kind of hope that wasn't the case. :< But we don't inspire a lot of enthusiasm for some reason.

Thanks, the guy is a character that I have been trying to develop over time. :< There are a lot of different influences. (Its the same character that is like hanging out with that girl).

RagnarokX Jul 17, 2007 11:27 AM

That Zbrush is amazing it seems... Is that just for creating still images, or could you take that into some kind of 3-d program like Maya and actually animate it? Regardless it's amazing work. I have seen kids work on animations in Maya for weeks that aren't even close to that detailed, but then again they can animate the character... Still awesome work! Another question for Meth and Magi, do you use photoshop and some kind of pen and tablet to do the coloring or "digital painting"?

Meth Jul 17, 2007 01:09 PM

RagnarokX, Yeah zbrush works in 3D and a deal they call 2.5D which is kinda weird, but you can get some cool effects. You can use zbrush as a modeling program and export models as .obj files which can be opened in Maya and Max to be rigged an animated.

I use a Wacom Intuos 2 that I've had for a few years. It's been great so far. It took me a bit to get used to. At first, I would only use it to color, but i've since gotten the hang of drawing digitally as well. It makes for a quick workflow since it's so easy to erase. I also use the tablet for zbrushing.

Now that I'm done with school, I'm thinking about setting aside some cash and upgrading to a Wacom Cintiq.

Magi Jul 17, 2007 01:40 PM

Meth, the model is really looking good so far. very exrpessive too. :o Zbrush is certainly very nice for those organic detail isn't it? O.o;; It would be fun to see the full character animated.

As for the question. I use OpenCanvas and a junkie brand tablet, it works. <.<;;

RagnarokX Jul 17, 2007 02:58 PM

The wacom tablets are pretty expensive when you are looking at the higher end models. I would love to get one eventually. As for you Magi whatever you are using works really well for you. I still think one of my favorite creations of yours was the Wise Vivi... I think that was the name. Very lose style, but sometimes that works a lot better than tight renderings. So both of you are really good. I'll upload some of my work on here sometime although most of it is pencil.

RagnarokX, nice work. Gotta a great sense of value.

I'd suggest grabbing an Intuos 3 if you can scrape up the cash. I think they're about 300 for the 8x6. Or there's always the Graphire for just over a hundred bucks (I think). It doesn't have the same real estate or pressure sensitivity, but it's still pretty good and it's portable.

Wow Immp that's pretty sweet, is that almost looks like a straight up painting. Did you do that with the computer or by hand?

Shenlon Jul 18, 2007 11:34 AM

Loving that Model you made in Zbrush meth. I've tried Zbrush and it is easier to model out characters there since its like molding clay but I still had not much success in it since I still need practice in it.

Do you use a tablet? (you gotta post more, I kept forgetting) Try using more then one layer gradually refine your rough drafts. Also remember to use ctrl-z to go back on your strokes if you could, try it sometimes. :3 What happens is that when I make a stroke, I'll make it, if it wasn't the right stroke, I'll ctrl-z and go back and make another stroke, until it finally get the one I want. Its could be a very fast back and forth process.

Shenlon Jul 26, 2007 04:00 PM

Yeah I use a tablet now.
I just scrabble all around the screen and create whatever i can and then I just create a new layer to make a cleaner outline.

Magi: haha, her facial expression is pretty cool, and that device is badass. Do you have a full frontal picture of that character? I'd like to see more if possible :3

Color study with a friend's picture. I made her look really ugly in comparison with how she really looks. I'm bad with color.

Not done shading and all that, or obviously erasing what's not supposed to be over the lines. But meh. I'll get to it soon enough.

Yeah, I plan on it. Whether I'll get to it... who knows. Someone brought up the idea of tossing Lilith in there as well, but I dunno. That seems like a fuckton of work, although the piece could easily benefit from it, and save me the pain of doing a really detailed background, since the way I did this kinda calls for one almost.

Slow and steady there Magi. I know what a pain Maya can be. The most simple things can take forever, if you wanna do things properly. Looks like you're getting the hang of it though.

Here's something I did earlier today for a friend.

Testing a 4 lights setup, it took approximately 5 minutes to render this, its a long time for such a small image. Anim8or does not have radiosity like rendering mechanism, so I'll have to "fake it". Parts of it looks somewhat convincing while most part don't, the back wall for example.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...setup_test.jpg
A 5 Light setup, took a bout 6 minutes now. Using a shapes to cover up parts of a local lights within the room.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...t_corridor.jpg
Another 5 lights setup, used a couple of different shapes to "contain" the lights and control their directions. It looks very different without the soft shadows.

YouTube Video

Finished render of my first project in dynamics. No keyframing, except for passive/active rigid bodies. The dropping of the trap after the box falls in the well is kind of a bit delayed, but I can live with it cause I don't want to render this shit again. Ever. My PC wasn't made for this crap.

Magi Sep 26, 2007 01:34 AM

Nice. How long did it took to render? Although rendering over days and weeks isn't uncommon, do you really need radiosity and reflections? How much polygon can you cut down etc. :o

Only took around 8 hours or so. Most of it was finished while I slept.

And yeah, I do need radiosity and reflections... I was going for making realistic metal and a smooth polished stone for the floor for the reflections.

After all, it was for a school project. If I was just dicking around with dynamics I'd have never put this much effort into something like this.

As for poly count, I'd say it was pretty barebones to begin with. There were probably a few places I could have cut down, but really it wasn't my intent since this is supposed to be a kind of portfolio piece. And, as a personal thing, I usually don't care about my poly count to begin with. I use as many as I need to get the desired result--Granted, I'm not saying I'm just tossing bevels and extrudes everywhere, cause that's just stupid. I'm just saying poly count isn't anywhere near my primary concern.

Magi Sep 26, 2007 02:28 PM

8 hours isn't very long. >.>; Granted that for most of us, that's a long time while you are awake to not being able to use the computer, but its not like its rendering for 3 days around the clock. We get that a lot at the end of semester when everybody is doing their final projects in the animation lab.
