[GUIDE] How to Connect to the GFF IRC Server. (#gfchat)

Another board wipe, another guide. I'm back again folks, and since mIRC has updated a few times, so has the guide.

Well, here we go again. The chat button is back to it's old self (wait for NYR to fix it) so I've thought of a handy guide to help some of you all get on the infamous GFF IRC Server.

First off, you'll need IRC, which you can get here. It is reccomended you always download the newest versions, as anti-hacker preventions are usually added to fix security weaknesses in earlier versions.

Open the zip, and install mIRC. Next comes a few steps you'll have to take. First off, open up the options menu (it should pop up when you start it.) It should look something like this:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...p/IRCGuide.jpg

Full Name: First, some basic info. Your name is not required, put anything you want there.
Email address: Also optional.
Nickname: The name you will use while chatting.
Alternative: If your first choice is taken, it will automatically switch to this second nick when you connect to the server.

The little flower button next to "Connect to Server" will take you to our next screen, or you can just select Servers in the left hand menu. Click the Add button you see and add the servers listed below the image.

Notice: The current server is irc.psigenix.net. If that does not resolve for you, feel free to use one of the servers it should take you too, these include fire.xelium.net, deep13.xelium.net, odin.xelium.net and mainstreet.xelium.net. If any of the above do not work, use Google.

Open the Options menu on the left hand side and hit the "Perform" button. Add the following line: "/join #gfchat", and make sure "Enable perform on connect" is checked off, like so:

You can add other channels, and identification for Nickserv (see notes section) as well.

You are now ready. But, you might want to change a few things, like those the default colors. You used to have to fill these in yourself, but apparently there are now themes. Select Colors from the View menu (or just hit ALT+K) to open your colors screen. It should look like this:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1.../IRCGuide4.jpg

There is one last small thing, which would be your Ident, which comes before your address when someone does a /whois command on you. Put anything you like, it makes no difference. That's about it. Just hit connect and you're on. =D

Misc:

There are a few commands you should know first.

REGISTERING YOUR NICK
We have a bot called NickServ which can be used to help protect your nick. The syntax for registering the current nick you are using is:

/nickserv REGISTER password email

Where password is the pass you want to use and email is your e-mail addy. When you register a nick you must identify with Nickserv when you first connect using the syntax /nickserv identify password. This helps keep others from using the nick you register. People using your nick can be disconnected using the /nickserv ghost nick password method

/whois <nick>

This will show a persons general info, address, name, IP, how long they've been idle, and so on.

/me <text>

Will display an action, which is usually accented in purple text.

Example: "/me approve that you suck" (as used by Puffinstuff) would show up as...

*Puffinstuff approve that you suck

There are several control+key combinations that change your text also.

Control+K brings up a color menu, where you can change your texts color. Color is not alloow in #gfchat however.

Control+B bolds your text, Control+R inverses it, and Control+U underlines it.

Feel free to add any questions/comments, and I'll add more things to the guide as I have time.

Moderators: Can I please ask someone to re-sticky this thread and copy it into the Board Support forum also? (Like it was before the crash =p)

Alternately, here's a similar tutorial for the Mac OS X client X-Chat Aqua which you can download here.

X-Chat Aqua IRC Setup Tutorial.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...0Junk/01-1.jpg
Once X-Chat is installed, you can go to File>Server List... (or ⌘+S) to bring up the server setup window.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...0Junk/02-1.jpg
The Xelium (GFF's IRC Server) network is not already included in the preset servers so you'll have to add it yourself. Fill in the User Information as desired. Note: X-Chat allows you to choose more than one nick in case the one your first choice is taken, which is pretty unlikely. Ideally you only need to fill in the first field at which point you can click on the "+" symbol near the bottom of the window to add a network and click "Edit". The checkboxes next to each network indicate "Favorites" (Left column) and "Auto Connect" (Right colum). NOTE: Any networks with Auto Connect checked will be automatically connected when the program starts up.

Click the "Add" button and type in a server address using one of the servers as Tails listed in the previous post:

Remember to use port #6667 for any server you choose on this network in the port column.

If you wish to use different user info for this particular network you can uncheck the "Use global user info" and fill in the info as needed. Again, only the "Nick Name" field is required; the rest are optional.

If you click the expansion button next to the "Join Channels" it will expand the field down like so:

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...%20Junk/05.jpg
You can type in as many channels as you wish to join upon connection. Input channel names separated by commas.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...%20Junk/06.jpg
If you have registered your nickname as also noted by Tails in the post above you can input the nickserv password into the highlighted field so that the nickserv bot automatically authenticates your nick upon network entry. Once the password is entered by the nickserv bot, you will automatically join any IRC channels that you listed in the "Join Channels" field in the window above.

Congratulations, you simpleton Mac junkie. You are now connected to the Xelium network. You may now proceed to talk copious amounts of shit with Skills or poke holes in Potion's logic to your heart's desire.

Window colors may differ.

How to connect with irssi.

1. Download irssi (http://irssi.org) and do the usual dance (./configure && make && sudo make install)
-OR-
1. Install irssi from your distro (use apt, yum, emerge, ports, etc)

2. $ irssi
3. Type /connect irc.xelium.net NOTE: As of right now, that doesn't work so well. Try using odin.xelium.net or deep13.xelium.net. My guess is nobody's updated the roundrobin DNS to remove fire.xelium.net, the old gff server. :erm:
4. Type /join #gfchat

Done.
