AOL Shits The Bed and All Over You, Too

http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/08/07...as-a-screw-up/

"On August 6th 2006, the international internet service provider known as American Online (AOL) took it upon themselves to release to the public domain an archive of their customers search habits over a period of 3 months. None of their customers were asked for their consent prior to the release of this data, which has resulted in international outrage from the public."

The most serious problem is the fact that many people often searchon their own name, or those of their friends and family, to see whatinformation is available about them on the net. Combine these egosearches with porn queries and you have a serious embarrassment.Combine them with “buy ecstasy” and you have evidence of a crime.Combine it with an address, social security number, etc., and you havean identity theft waiting to happen. The possibilities are endless."

AOL is really scraping the bottom of the barrel these days.

So, let's say I know someone on AOL. Where do I go to check and see if their search habits were revealed?

This collection consists of ~20M web queries collected from ~650k users over three months.
The data is sorted by anonymous user ID and sequentially arranged.

All –

This was a screw up, and we’re angry and upset about it. It was an innocent enough attempt to reach out to the academic community with new research tools, but it was obviously not appropriately vetted, and if it had been, it would have been stopped in an instant.

Although there was no personally-identifiable data linked to these accounts, we’re absolutely not defending this. It was a mistake, and we apologize. We’ve launched an internal investigation into what happened, and we are taking steps to ensure that this type of thing never happens again.

Here was what was mistakenly released:

* Search data for roughly 658,000 anonymized users over a three month period from March to May.

* There was no personally identifiable data provided by AOL with those records, but search queries themselves can sometimes include such information.

* According to comScore Media Metrix, the AOL search network had 42.7 million unique visitors in May, so the total data set covered roughly 1.5% of May search users.

* Roughly 20 million search records over that period, so the data included roughly 1/3 of one percent of the total searches conducted through the AOL network over that period.

* The searches included as part of this data only included U.S. searches conducted within the AOL client software.

Our apologies again.

Seriously. "Oops, I accidentally printed to the office printer my financial information rather than my grandson's baby pictures." Stupid.

What kind of person uses AOL's search engine? I know I have never done so.

Indeed. The best and most used search engine is google, as it should be. The only AOL thing I use is AIM, which I barely use anymore. On topic though, thats pretty shitty by AOL, but who expects great service from them?

wishingstar Aug 7, 2006 10:08 PM

slightly off topic, but i did put some of my aliases on google. and they all 4 out of 5 come up in 2+ pages of result (all MY stuff). guess there isn't any annonyminity anymore....

and... yea.. frak AOL

Good. I hope they get sued to the point where they go bankrupt, but still, its American Online, so thats a lot of money that would have to go away. :X

I always hated AOL. Serves them right, honestly. :P That's why I never trust AOL's search engines. The only AOL thing I use (And VERY rarely, mind you.) is AOL Instant Messenger.

Google is actually WAY better than any search engine in the past, Yahoo Search being second best.

I honestly can't believe that people still bother getting aol. I don't know why people don't realize that there are chatrooms outside of aol and they're easily as annoying.

I'm just happy I can use AOL ISP without using the shitty program -

I'm glad I can check my stupid AOL-email-address without using the shitty program either.

The program itself is not even on my computer ;)
My mom freakin uses it and loves it - thats why I have this email-account ...since... my crappy teenager-times :boxing:

Too bad, that I'd have to change so much, if I want another email-address (grammar?)
