Have you ever been mugged or jumped?
Has anyone here ever been mugged or jumped? It can be in any degree. Gun point, a knife, no weapons even.
Philly per capita has the highest crime rate in the country I believe, so it's not surprising that I got mugged a few times. I got mugged a total of 3 times, but only 1 of the 3 times they got away with anything of mine. I was lucky no weapons were used. The first time I was about 12 and I was riding my bike with my friend. About 4 black kids surrounded us and told us to give up our bikes. They looked around 13/14ish. One of the kids swung at me but I blocked part of it and he only grazed the side of my cheek. Another kid punched me and it hit me in the ear and it didn't hurt very much, but eventually we both got away with our bikes. Another time I was about 15 and was coming home from school with a friend and some kid came over to me and put his arm around me and asked me for a bus token. I told him I didn't have one and I knew right away what he was going to ultimately try to do because his grip around me was pretty tight. He told me to give him my money or he was gonna kick my ass and my friend shoved him off and we both ran for it across a busy street on a red light. He didn't follow us across. Another time, I was about 14 I think and I was riding my bike through a park and I was near a part with stairs so I wasn't going fast. There were a couple wiggers sitting down drinking and one of them chased after me and I couldn't accelerate fast enough and he stuck a stick in my spokes and I fell of the bike. Oddly, he asked for my Iverson jersey and not the bike, and I gave it to him because there were a few other guys with him and one had a glass bottle, and I didn't feel like having it smashed over my skull. I'm curious if anyone here ever got mugged and to what degree. I know people who have been held at gun point, and it must be one of the scariest things. You never know if they'll just shoot you anyway. |
A friend of a friend got mugged three times in Clowntown (right out of Boston, and that is not the actual name of the town). He left the house to get a bag of chips from a house across the street. First, he got mugged with a guy with a gun. He gave up his wallet. Then a dude with a tire iron walked up to him asking for his wallet, but when he had no money to give up, he got hit in the face with the tire iron. He got across the street, got the bag of chips, and then got mugged again for the chips. Poor dude got back to his friends after that.
I got jumped in high school a few times, but I never got any serious injuries. The worst I ever did to a dude is two black eyes and a broken nose. I was whaling on the dude, but then his big ass bro pulled me off and put his size 14 in my chest. The air was knocked out of me so I couldn't continue. |
Why yes I have, I was calling my grandmother in the train station to let her know I was coming home late and these dumbasses took my Sidekick II. I chased them for a while but when they got off at an empty stop, some guy just kept me from chasing them further.
I went home, logged on to T-Mobile's site, found they'd taken pictures of themselves, put their friends' phone numbers in the phone, and called one of their grandmothers. That was the end of them. |
When my friend and I were Grade 5 we went to the park behind his apartment one day, and we saw a bunch of teen guys. I think they commented about my friend's younger brother's bike or something. All of a sudden my friend just told me to run, and I was highly confused at that time, so I just walked out, while my friend ran, and his brother pedalled out of there. I don't know if the teens were approaching us, or if they just kept staring at us intently.
Later when I asked what happened, he said that one of the kids was brandishing a knife, and then I thought that was pretty scary, even though I didn't notice anything in my naivete. |
When I was around 7yrs old I went on a trip to Jamaica with my grandmother.
I was in the backseat of a car while my grandmother and another gentleman was in the front. We parked on the street infront of a house and the guy went inside to get something. My grandmother and I were still sitting in the car when, within the two minutes the guy left us, two individuals rushed out of the bushes and put knives to our necks through the open windows. One made sure I didn't move and the other ripped the gold chain off my grandmother's neck. Afterwards, they both darted off back into brush. |
I was with a friend in Houston some time ago (I think I was barely 20). Wasn't 21 at the time, so I shouldn't have legally had a handgun. I didn't have a license to do carry-concealed, much less. But I didn't trust Houston, and had to be on-foot for a little bit in downtown regions, as she lived around there. I didn't have my truck available and she didn't have one period. I relied on taxi'ing, and this was a maybe quarter-a-mile walk. Didn't wanna try it without being armed, as it was later at night.
I was walking with a female friend and some black guy walked out of a little alley about five yards ahead and pulled out a knife. He approached and demanded our money and her jewelry (she had a few rings, including an engagement ring from her fiance, one of my pals). I promptly drew my .45 and aimed it at him. Said to back off or else I'd indulge in a little bit of self defense. The guy literally dropped the knife and scrambled away, stumbling in the process. My friend looked at me and stammered, asking if I had a license to carry concealed. I said "not even 21." "Then what're you doing with a handgun?!" "What handgun? =)" Needless to say, these events firmly established me as the Best Man at the wedding. |
I packed some Parsley in a ziploc and sprinkled a little water on it and tried to pass it off as weed. I got jumped that Afternoon.

I went to downtown Detroit with a friend to see a concert one night when we were about 18. We only parked around the corner, so I'm amazed we actually got mugged, but we lolligagged coming out, so we weren't with the main crowd. There were a few homeless men asking for money. One man near the exit was really tattered and frail looking, and my friend gave him a dollar. Another homeless man must have saw him do that, so he started following us out to our car, asking for money. We told him we didn't have anything and kept walking. Once we got around the corner, and there weren't any people nearby, he told us to give him what we had or he'd shoot us. I panicked, of course, because I didn't want to get shot, so I gave him what I had, which was luckily only $20 in Canadian money. He then ran off, and we were fine, but it was scary as hell.

A black guy pointed a gun at me demanding money. He wasn't big and muscular so I fought back and tried to grab his gun. Short story, he didn't get what he wanted and I didn't get what I wanted either, a broken nose.

I used to work for Jostens' Yearbook Division as a graphic designer, so I used to travel all over the state for weeks at a time to country towns that didn't have a shred of decent Mexican food. One night after having been gone just north of Auburn, CA for a week and a half, I just wanted to get some tacos. That's ALL I wanted. So I stopped at a taco truck that was open at 1 am just outside of Visalia.
I was wearing my slacks, dress shoes and OOPS... How could I forget... I'm in Southside gang territory (Local gang color: blue) wearing a red dress shirt with a black tie! Upon having been personally insulted by my obviously suave and fashionable, yet unfortunately color-matched, attire some kid who couldn't have been older than 14 years old asked me where I was from. He was wearing your standard-issue "Chicano" gang attire; slacks, tank-top, blue shirt with only the top button done and sunglasses... AT NIGHT. At first I ignored him because I was just hungry and those tacos were the only thing on my mind, but then he came up and gave me a slight nudge and asked again where I was from. In my frustration I told him, I wasn't from here. "I'm from Guadalajara." This time his tone got a little more stern as he said, "Where you from? And don't get smart with me." ... "You know what homie? I live in this town. OK? A lot of my closest friends are people you smoke with so just back the fuck up and let me get my grub on." He then reached into his back pocket and before he could pull out whatever it was he reached for I impulsively swung hard hit him dead in the face and he went down in one hit. I didn't even wait for my food. I paid for it and told the cook to give the boy my food as an apology. I really felt bad... The boy was almost half my age; but then again... I never want to know what he was going to pull from his back. I was just pissed anyway. It's dumb fucking spics like him that have gotten PLENTY of my friends killed over the past decade. Impulse first and ask question later. Not a smart way to roll. :( |
Wow, that's crazy... I had no idea so many people got mugged. Maybe I'm just not in a muggable part of the country...
At any right, myself and most of the girls I know have had instilled in us a healthy fear of getting mugged and raped. |

I've never been mugged. There is something seriously wrong with the place you live in if this is a common event. :/
|
I've been beaten up before, for no real apparent reason either. Was waiting for the bus at a bus stop when I was like 10 years old, and like 4 older kids came out of nowhere and started to beat me and brother up. After about 5 minutes or so, they seemed to have gotten bored (we did try fighting back, but they were a lot bigger than us, so couldn't of done much). They didn't take anything, but I felt it might as well have been a mugging. At least they focused mostly on the body, so I didn't have any facial injuries, but I felt pretty bad for a while and wanted revenge (but unlike just shooting someone, I would've released a bomb and blew up a block or something, screw collateral damage). Luckily I never went through with that and now know better.
Another time I witnessed someone getting mugged (eerily enough, near where I got beaten up earlier in my other post), but instead of helping, I merely jaywalked to the other side of the street, since I was about a good 50 feet away from them. I saw a group of about 6 large guys (maybe in their early 20's), and next thing I knew, one of them threw a punch at a fat lady walking past them. I didn't really want to stick around, cause even if I did help, what could I have done? I don't see the point of myself getting beaten up either (yeah, you might criticize me and say you would've jumped in, but it's easy to say that; it's another to actually do it if you were in the situation I was). |

One time a friend of mine was walking in south philly with some girl he was dating, and he walked by a bunch of black kids standing on a street corner and one of them just punched him in the side of the face. He said there were about 7 of them so he just kept on walking. This was in daylight too.
No mugging, no nothing, they just punched him and laughed about it. Some people are just messed up. |

The worst thing I heard here was the Brian Nichols case. (Some guy going aggro in a court house) |
Philly is very bad and I'm not proud of it. I love my city, but it's shameful that I literally can't walk through certain huge areas past 10pm without risking my life.
The crime here is so bad, and I'm pretty sure per capita it's #1 in the nation. It angers me. |

Maybe this is the only reason why I'm glad to live in such a secluded place. A city with 200,000 residents, and everyone is nice for the most part. What I find eerie is the fact that my city has the highest crime rate in all of Canada. Yet I've never been mugged/beat up, or whatever. Never. Seriously, WTF. |
I love Western Canada. Crime is not too bad at all. Me and two of my friends walked up and down a busy street in Vancouver both at day and night passed hungry people, homeless people, a group of punk rockers in kilts and mohawks, a guy who would climb a tree or pole for money, and scalpers to the Alice Cooper concert we went to see. We never once feared that we may get beat up and/ or mugged.
|
I've never been mugged. That's why I like this town. I can walk down to the beach at 2 in the morning and not have to worry about anyone trying to hurt me. Except when the navy ships are in port, because they go out and get drunk and get into fights with the local drunks. But, whatever, I still don't have to worry about much here.
|
Vancouver is awesome, even at night. You could walk past anyone, even in downtown, and everyone minds their own business and leaves you be (sure, we get the occasional "can you spare change?" from homeless people, but that's common). I was freaked years ago when I went to Vancouver for the first time, but, I eventually got used to it, and it seems like a good city to live in.
One day, just two weeks ago when I was there, we were walking downtown on a residental street, and we could overhear some lady bitching to her boyfriend about how he was cheating. And she was loud, too. You could hear her from half a block away. But otherwise, nothing's happened to me there. scotty; Davie? Broadway? Arbutus? Burrard? ;_; |

If you don't have a car to get around in at night, you don't walk. I've been in that many fights because I've "walked up the wrong street" or some stupid shit like that, it's old. It's not a thing of jumping someone for their money, its just a thing of seeing who they can bash.
I've never been jumped for anything I own, just been in fights, and funny enough, nearly half of those fights have turned into pretty big brawls against the two "groups". There's these half-ass fuckwits that you somehow meet along the line, that think they own the place and are in a "gang" or whatever, and think they're 6-foot tall and bulletproof. Actually... This city is pretty much full of those half-ass fuckwits. |

Well I've experienced a drive by shooting once. My friends and I were eating at some Mexican fast food 1 in the morning. The fast food was located right on a corner, and it was one of those where you eat outside. Some dumbass in a car pulls up like 20 feet from where we're eating and pulls out a gun. Fires 5 shots into the air and drives off. About 5 minutes later, we see cops going after the gunner. No one was hit luckily. I think the reason for the drive by shooting was "I'm so brave I can pull off this kind of shit and get away." But like Broken said, you learn very quickly where the safe spots are and where to avoid at all cost. |

That being said, I haven't been mugged. One of my friends was in broad daylight at a convenience store. The sad part is how that area, which is about a 10 minute walk from my neighbourhood, has gone down the shitter. When I lived there, there were a lot of younger kids (we were all about 10) and the older kids in the area weren't so bad. Kids grow up :(. Drug dealers, gang members, albanian refugee's who start shit for fun, thieves, etc. etc. The convenience store gets robbed at gunpoint pretty frequently now. ANYWAY. Closest random violent act that happened to me was that me and two friends were almost stomped down by two huge black girls while we were waiting for a ride, outside, downtown, at 10:30-11:00ish. They thought we called them a bitch. Got it cleared up, and our ride came. Was reading a local music scene messageboard later that night. The girls went after these two drunk white girls and beat the shit out of them. They got sent to the hospital, and then a bunch of black guys came and started shit with the scene kids. The cops got called. That's about it >_> |

When I was young I got a knife pulled on me by this punk. I didn't know what to do so I picked up a brick and we just sort of backed away from each other. I guess he didn't think I would fight back and didn't want to chance a brick being thrown at his head. lol

well, i've never been mugged :\ i live in iowa city, in this town you could walk around at night and say hello to strangers. HELL, walking along a deserted road, you can WAVE to people and they'll wave back. I'm guessing i live in on of the most friendly places in the world. it leads to nothing exciting.
|
I've been on the verge of being mugged once - If a burly guy running at you and yelling "fucking stop" is any indication, then yeah, I guess. I wound up getting onto a train and escaped him though.

I wasn't mugged, But I think I was almost kidnapped and raped. I was In Greenbriar Mall because my friend said that was where he had got this Cd I wanted from. I hadn't been there in a long time and forgot where everything was. So I looked at the Directory for the Music Store and It seemed that you had to go outside behind the mall to get there. (Maybe I read it wrong)
So I was behind the mall walking trying to find the Peppermint Music store, When this Guy In a van called me over. I stopped. He asked for a Lighter, I didn't have one and went on about my buisness. I kept on walking (NO ONE IN SIGHT BESIDES THAT GUY) Suddenly I looked back and he was following me. I was getting nervous. Then he yelled, "STOP FOR A SEC". I ignored it and kept on walking. He then yelled "WAIT!" I turned around and Stated that I didn't know him. So his freaky Statement that came next made me start joggng. "But I can get to know you" He started after me. At this moment I'm sprinting looking for people. I was mad that no one was out here and that I came out here inthe first place. Then By some Miraculous Miracle, It Started Raining. Oh God, I've never wanted to see Rain so much in my life. I guess he had a problem getting wet because he turned around and darted in an alley. I my self had no problem getting wet and finally found an entrance back into the Mall. Once I told my mom she almost freaked and went looking for him. |
When I was 10 and living in Philly (Fox Chase), I was skating around with some friends in the schoolyard of my elementary school when, out of nowhere, I'm first punched in the back of the head hard. I turned around to see what the hell it was, and I'm punched in the face, knocking me on the ground. I look up to see some tall guys, laughing at me, yelling nigger and such. Because I'm awesome, I didn't do a thing until my friends yelled at me to run. So, I did, but not before they got some more hits in.
I've been fortunate enough to not have anything like that happen again. I was pretty shocked, though, since Fox Chase was supposed to be a pretty nice neighborhood. |
